The Post Office
Favorite part of being your mom?
the little things are never mundane.
A walk to the post office,
holding your small hand in mine,
Teaching you, reminding you,
lifting you up to see over the counter.
Dinosaur stickers and drizzling rain.
Now the rain is coming down harder;
'get on my back' i say,
and we run to the car.
'how about a treat?'
'a treat!' you say,
we go in and your eyes big as saucers. climbing into a booth,
smiling. that precious smile that will soothe my soul as long as i live.
choices. choices choices.
'chocolate chip cookie?' i say
'rice krispy treat?'
'lemon poppy seed?'
'lemon poppy seed' you echo.
good choice. my sweet smart individual boy.
running back to the car.
soaked through our clothes.
your eyes mesmerized by the drops falling all over the car windows.
sitting in the driveway listening to it pour.
'do you want to go in?' i say.
'no!' you chime.
one of my favorite memories of my life.
