Manifestations of cultural resistance in Wichita, Kansas. Latin American immigrants in the USA heartland. Winter of 2012. Celebration for the Virgen of Guadalupe.
First day in Romania- I had a wonderful time walking the streets in Bucharest, getting acquainted with the town...there were many parallels I found between Mexico and Bucharest, both culturally and politically. Both places struggling with its past, moving forward into modernity...at any cost.
Today I remembered I haven’t made a post about one of the coolest place I’ve heard of: Cave of the Crystals, which was accidentally discovered in 2000 by miners at Naica, Mexico. It contains giant selenite crystals, the largest crystals found by far. The cave’s largest one found to date is 12 m (39 ft) in length.
It’s one of the most extreme places on the planet as it lies almost 300 meters (900 feet) below the surface of the Earth, reaching air temperatures up to 58°C (136°F) with 90 to 99 percent humidity. Also, there’s a risk of falling into deep pits or on a sharp crystal.
The magical surroundings probably outweigh those factors. One of the teams exploring Cave of the Crystals said that it was like setting foot on a new planet. more about their expedition at stormchaser.ca

This short film I co-produced as resident artist at The Seed House ~ Casa de La Semilla in collaboration with the Kansas Humanities Council highlighting the drastic change in demographics in Western Kansas in the past two decades due to a huge immigrant influx from Mexico and Central America, over 50% of the population is now of Latino origin and growing- as we struggle for political and cultural power in the tense political climate of Kansas, the home of Kris Kobach.
4 first-generation immigrant share about their experience migrating to the small town of Ulysses and the challenges we have faced- Premier is tomorrow at the Historic Adobe Museum and will share details as the short film is available online for everyone to watch!
Rick Lowe and Roberto Bedoya sat down recently at the Grantmakers in the Arts conference in Houston to discuss issues of equity and diversity in grantmaking and placemaking.

Un Recuerdito (A Little Keepsake) addresses the themes of memory, time and identity within the context of his personal experiences as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico living in Kansas.
Americanos are like a bouquet of flowers so diverse that each one seeks the best place to get a kiss by the sun. To be an American is to be intimate change.
