For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary. The pose of it looked a little haunting to me, thus prompting this illustration.

rocky learning about last names is one of the most stressful days of grace's life on the way to erid.
it starts with them watching a movie, maybe the devil wears prada, and a little way through the movie rocky asks why miranda has two names. is it because she's more important?
grace, already anticipating a long conversation, says no, all humans have two names. everyone's just scared of miranda because her two names are really well known.
"grace have another name and not tell rocky?!" rocky asks, incensed. "what names mean, question? why two?"
"well," grace explains, "your first name is the name your parents give you at birth. usually people call you by your first name, especially if you're close. except in... some situations, i guess," he says, remembering stratt's vat. nobody had called him ryland there, but he still felt pretty close to all of them.
"and second name?" rocky prompts.
"right - last names correlate to your family. when you're born, you take your family name so that people know who you're related to. it also helps differentiate between two people with the same first name."
"so what grace last name, question?" rocky asks. grace blanches a little.
"uhh... grace is my last name, rock," he says, sheepishly.
"what?!" rocky yells. grace winces. "grace not tell rocky grace first name? grace not close with rocky? grace hate rocky?"
"no!" grace protests. "of course i don't hate you! don't say that!" maybe it's stupid, but grace does actually feel a little hurt by the insinuation.
"then why not tell rocky?!"
grace sighs. "i don't know, rock. i mean - when i met you i barely knew up from down, much less what my name meant to me. and i kept getting these memories and everyone kept calling me grace, and i just, i haven't been called ryland in so long it doesn't really feel like my name anymore."
rocky ruminates on this for a moment. then: "...ryland is grace first name, question?"
"yeah."
"rocky like grace better." grace deflates with relief. "yeah, me too, buddy."
"but," rocky says, "rocky want last name too now."
huh. okay, then.
"i guess i could figure that out," grace agrees. "we could give you movie rocky's last name? you wanna be rocky balboa?"
"mm, no," rocky says.
"okay, well we could go region based, i guess. where'd you grow up? i can make up something fitting, or i can look something up on my computer, i'm sure there's places on earth that are similar to places on erid -"
"no," rocky interrupts. "want grace."
"...huh?"
"rocky want grace last name."
grace is suddenly feeling very, very flushed. "you what??"
"last name is family name, question?"
"well, yeah, but -"
"and rocky grace family now. so rocky want grace family name!"
...well, when he says it like THAT, it's so much more innocent. grace... well, he agrees, because what else is he gonna say? that rocky should know that that that's as good as a marriage proposal?
no, that takes too much cultural context, and a longer conversation than he wants to have right now. easier to just let rocky have it. it's not like there'll be any consequences to bite him in the ass, right?
I think it would be funny if most of Grace's eridian students went to him and asked for earth pronoun designations instead of picking for themselves, because they think it's cool to get word-gifts from the coolest teacher in the galaxy
and grace is trying so hard to not accidentally be sexist or assign gender roles to a monogendered species, so like, trying hard not to call someone he/him just because they like sports, or she/her just because they seem caring, or whatever. and he's having a hard time about it because he's like oh man why am I assigning the pronouns I'm assigning, i hope I'm not bringing any of my biases into this. just absolutely eating himself up over it
he tries to fix this by starting to roll a die, or throw darts at a dartboard, but his students immediately throw a fit because the point of the word-gifts is that they are specific, picked deliberately for them, right? and grace tries to explain gender bias and so on, but it becomes clear these kids could genuinely not give less of a shit, they just want to know what their AGAG (assigned gender at grace) is, alright? why is this so hard for him to understand??
eventually grace comes to the conclusion that he's on a different planet, and severely overthinking this, and that his kids really just are having fun--they really don't see the grace-given pronouns as categorization, he figures they see them as something more akin to astrology. or an eridian tiktok trend. when grace learns they call the assigning a word-gift he probably cries tbh
Ok consider: Grace is dying on Erid, but his body is the thing that's failing, not his mind. So he and Rocky decide to pull an Avatar.
They find the body of an Eridian who has recently passed away (don't ask me how) and transplant Grace's mind into that body (don't ask me how)
Grace of course has a WILD time adjusting to being an Eridian, learning how to "see" the way Eridians do, how to speak, how to walk around with five legs, but he and Rocky finally get to actually hug! And Grace gets to see all the parts of the planet that he was never able to while human!
Grace is finally getting used to his new life as an Eridian when a human spaceship shows up, carrying astronauts
I hope this is okay to ask but how do you find working in labs while being disabled? I'm a cane user and so many of the job descriptions say you need to stand for long periods of time and I genuinely can't understand why when chairs exist??
Babes, I’m gonna tell you what I wish someone had told me when I was starting lab work as a young kid. They are fuckin’ with you and hoping you give up. It’s a room with hoods, you are not ruining anything by sitting in a fuckin’ chair to do your work.
See, those job descriptions are ableist as fuck on purpose, because science as a career field changes about as fast as a glacier moves. If you’re an American, you’re covered by the ADA to get what you need. If not, you need to remember your worth and that the steps to accommodate you are beyond worth it to have you. Have a list of what you need, see the space during the interview if possible. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. You have a right to be there, you are an asset. It doesn’t ruin anything for you to sit in a height adjustable chair.
I wish I could tell you it’s gonna be easy. But it’s not. The room you’ll be working in is going to be the easiest part of this. You are going to have to prove you belong in there a countless number of times, but you do. I promise. ❤️

ADA in the laboratory refers to designing lab spaces that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by ensuring accessibility, safety,
Eridian Grace, as in culturally Eridian, not the species Eridian, is so important to me.
Grace who does jazz hands and taps when he's asking a question and says some words three times like Rocky. Grace who makes chirps and trilling noises when he's happy.
Grace who starts thinking and dreaming in Eridian, who sometimes has dreams that are just sound, no visual. (Grace who, if he ever goes back to Earth for whatever reason after years on Erid, forgets some words in English and speaks in the sentence structure of Eridian because he has to translate from Eridian to English when he speaks outloud).
Grace who does scarification (even if Rocky protests at first) - I've read some fics where he does the Voyager pulsar map, or dots and lines showing his route from Sol, to Tau Ceti, turning around towards Sol, and then the line going all the way back to Erid. Even though he already has the scars from Rocky saving him, maybe Rocky's family crest. A scar showing his rank as Captain of the Hail Mary - maybe something to represent her, too.
Grace who wears Eridian gems, as earrings, in a chain for his glasses, in strings draped over him that clink together when he walks - the most important ones, like the earrings he wears all the time, the color of the blueish-green gems (or spots?) in/on Rocky's carapace.
Grace who wears a bracelet on each arm that have ribbed marks like on Rocky's arm so he can properly say goodbye (not something he had to do, but something that felt right to do, something that made him feel more like himself), sound included.
Grace who considers himself an Eridian!! Grace who IS an Eridian!!
Any of you remember this post? Guess who's now added season two?
THE PITT LINES AND SCENES DISTRIBUTION SPREADSHEET
If you're only here for the spreadsheet, there is is. Go for it. I'm going to go over the basic numbers of this season like I did with the last, and then we're going to compare the two seasons.
I'm not taking a stance in this post in particular, this is purely for numbers. If you want me to find more numbers for other distributions or things to compare, let me know.
I did twenty-four characters in total. Here is the first pie chart related to actual line distribution. In this I included the "other" category to account for the total amount of lines in the show.
The season had a total of 10.58k lines. This chart rounds to the point ones place, but the spreadsheet goes to the point tens, if you're interested in a more detailed distribution.
Our top five contributors (excluding other):
Robby - 14.8% of the total lines with 1.56k
Dana - 6.2% of the total lines with 659
Langdon - 5.4% of the total lines with 575
Santos - 5.4% of the total lines with 571
Whitaker - 5.3% of the total lines with 557
How does that compare to our scene total?
These were determined by the scenes in which a named character has at least one line. The character appearing in the scene does not count. This is specifically for speaking roles in scenes.
There are 523 scenes total within the show (if you want to know, 2x11 has the most at 44 and 2x15 has the least with 26). Again, full breakdown across episodes in the spreadsheet.
Who's our top five? It changes a little, but honestly, not much.
Robby - 41% of all scenes, 214 total
Dana - 24.9% of all scenes, 130 total
Al-Hashimi - 22.9% of all scenes, 120 total
Langdon - 22.2% of all scenes, 116 total
Whitaker- 22.3% of all scenes, 106 total
The fact that it stays almost exactly the same whereas as it did last season
I think this is all really interesting to me, so now let's get into how these compare to last season. All under the cut.
Here's where the cool cats are.
Alright, first we're going to look at the two charts side by side, and then into statistical changes between sesasons.
I love staring at these. It's a really interesting change between seasons, really.
Alright, on to the differences between seasons.
SEASON ONE IS HIGHLIGHTED IN RED. SEASON TWO IS IN PINK. IF THEY HAVE LESS LINES/SCENES IN SEASON TWO, THEY ARE IN PURPLE. IF THEY HAVE MORE, THEY ARE IN BLUE.
S1: LINES - 621/6% || SCENES - 117/22%
S2: LINES - 575/5.4% || SCENES - 116/22.2%
DIFFERENCE: LINES - -46/0.6% || SCENES - -1/+0.2%
While technically he is up in his scene percentage, he is in one less scene so I still highlighted in purple. The change is just due to a smaller amount of scenes this season.
