Ok so it's been a hot minute since I've posted anything anywhere and I feel like I should be honest (groundbreaking, I never do this). This is like, my third time drafting a post like this, so hopefully I actually post it this time.
First is that I'm not dead. Shocker I know.
Second is that despite being alive, I haven't exactly been living recently. Nothing particularly bad has happened, but I've always had shit mental health and it's been kinda Bad for a little while now. I'm coping and I'm trying, but I am, ultimately, not at my best and haven't been for some time.
Third, the reason I've not been posting any fics is because I've actually been writing original fiction. I've not talked about it on here (or many other places, admittedly) but I'm primarily writing a fantasy series. It's been really hard to write fanfic, because I'm writing so much other stuff.
I'm at a point with it where the first book is maybe as good as I can make it. I've been working on getting an agent list together, learning about querying, trying to get myself to a point where I'm able to actually do the querying.
I don't know if it will lead anywhere, but I figure that I should try and that I should probably talk about what I'm doing so that it's not complete silence on here. I keep thinking that I shouldn't talk about it, and I think it's an arbitrary rule which is actually holding me back. I might talk about it some more at some point, but even this post feels like A Lot.
In short, thank you for your patience. I'm finally reaching a point where it feels like things are moving forward instead of stagnating. Hopefully posting this is a good sign of that.

On July 25th, 2025, the UK Online Safety Act will take place. This is being put in place by the government to "protect" children and adults in the UK (aka basically form a digital steel curtain around the country). This will ban lots of platforms and also restrict internet access a LOT for UK citizens. This act will most likely be used as a way to oppress queer people or people part of minorities in an attempt to take away their safe spaces. I'm really too lazy to explain this whole thing but you can look up information about the online safety act in your own time. if you want online freedom and privacy, sign this petition:

sorry if i'm gonna be quiet for a while. my country recently introduced laws that make it so that in order to use social media to the fullest (not being able to view ns/fw content and in a few cases, not even having access to dms), i HAVE to give the sites my id/face scan.
it goes into effect july 25th. it'll probably effect here too, since this place allows mature content (tho not full on ns/fw)
i'm very distressed about it bc i might end up not even being able to talk to my internet friends. i don't really have any irl ones
if i have to disappear on most socials by then, you know why.
if you're in the uk like i am there IS a petition to sign on the official gov petitions website asking to consider repealing this law. it currently has almost 8k signatures and needs 10k in order for the government to even acknowledge it (and 100k for them to debate it)
idk if i can post it here but please... go sign it! and go write to your local mp if possible. they need to realize how dangerous this law is going to be for uk citizens online. it doesn't protect children, it's just privacy invading AND a huge security risk to boot

i should've said this before but the law is called the online safety act 2023. look it up, educate yourself about what it does, and learn about just how damaging it will be to the internet landscape as a whole for uk citizens everywhere, as well as, ironically, incredibly unsafe for everyone
it's like those internet laws that the us keeps trying to push in, but the uk somehow beat them. it got almost no coverage from the media bc the gov was super sneaky about passing it through, and there were very few people speaking out about it. they KNOW that if the public knows about this overall, many would be extremely unhappy. absolutely foul.
AND the gov is thinking about adding even more social media 'safety' rules on top of that, such as like... curfews and limiting amount of time spent on social media for 'kids' (so basically anyone who doesn't id verify, which will be a lot of people bc it's a huge security hazard and invasive to boot). insane.
kids won't be protected by this. they'll be encouraged to do more risky behaviours as a result (such as stealing ids, or going to shadier, less monitored parts of the web). parents shouldn't be letting the internet baby their children - they should be actively making sure they're okay and safe, rather than blaming the internet every time something has happened. sometimes it IS the parents' fault for not being more attentive, yknow? you wanted kids, now raise them properly!
petition is now at 9k! 1k more and then the gov will HAVE to respond (though i imagine their response will be 'tough sh!t, we're not backing down bc waaahhh the CHILDREN')

As of the time of this post, AO3 has been scraped by yet another shady individual looking to make a quick buck off the backs of hardworking hobby writers. This Reddit post here has all the details and the most current information. In short, if your fic URL ends in a number between 1 and 63,200,000 (inclusive), AND is not archive locked, your fic has been scraped and added to this database.
I have been trying to hold off on archive locking my fics for as long as possible, and I've managed to get by unscathed up to now. Unfortunately, my luck has run out and I am archive locking all of my current and future stories. I'm sorry to my lovelies who read and comment without an account; I love you all. But I have to do what is best for me and my work. Thank you for your understanding.
Just so you all know you can (and should) file a complaint on this piece of shit's database. DMCA claim has already been filed and some of the other scraped websites' datasets have been deleted. This art scam has been going around a while, but in case you are not aware: while some fanartists do commissions, it is Not Normal to cold call in AO3 comments asking someone if they'd like to buy art of their fic. Number one, it's kind of gauche to say you want to do fanart of someone's work but only if it's paid work completely unprompted, but number two, and more importantly, "promotion, solicitation, and advertisement of commercial products or activities" are against the AO3 Terms of Service.
If you get a comment like this, my advice is to delete it and block the account. You could also submit an abuse report, but I didn't bother because I figured that these scammers are spamming the same comment multiple times and someone else probably had reported the account already. Your call if it happens to you though.

The SAVE Act has passed in The House. It makes it illegal for a woman whose last name does not match her birth name to vote as a "citizenship verification measure." The main way around it is being able to present your passport at the polls since that proves your citizenship.

wow this is an extremely blatant voter suppression bill. it makes extreme modifications to the motor voter act to make it significantly harder to register to vote for everyone, not just women. it's so patriotic that it even disenfranchises military personnel!
here's a summary of house rep morelle's (NY-D) comments from the hearing on july 10, 2024 when this passed the house. this bill would:
prevent most americans from registering to vote using only a driver's license, including REAL ID-compliant licenses
require additional documentation beyond standard photo IDs to prove citizenship
only accept passports as standalone proof of citizenship, which only 48% of americans have (nice middle finger to the 130 million citizens who don't have one)
prevent military personnel from using military IDs alone, requiring they also provide records showing US birthplace. new registrants deployed overseas will be unable to register due to in-person requirements
prevent native americans' tribal IDs from being accepted unless they show place of birth in the US, which most don't
