Level of Detail (LOD) in Building Information Modeling (BIM)
The Level of Detail (LOD) defines how much information and precision a Building Information Model contains at each project phase. It helps architects, engineers, and contractors communicate design intent, scope, and execution clearly throughout the building lifecycle.
LOD 100 – Pre Design: Basic massing model showing the overall shape and area.
LOD 200 – Schematic Design: Rough geometry with estimated sizes, locations, and orientations.
LOD 300 – Design Development: Accurate geometry and defined systems ready for coordination.
LOD 350 – Construction Documentation: Detailed components and connections supporting fabrication.
LOD 400 – Construction Stage: Fabrication-level detail suitable for installation and assembly.
LOD 500 – As-Built: Final verified model reflecting the completed construction, used for operation and maintenance.
