Guided Inquiry

I am currently reading Guided Inquiry, Learning in the 21st Century. I am very interested in this instructional model. This model seems very radical in the current high stakes testing environment that looks to measure teacher effectiveness based in part on a test score. Guided Inquiry seeks to guide students in becoming independent lifelong learners rather than good test takers. It is also a collaborative model which allows the student to have input in his or her learning.

As the school librarian, I want to lead my students through inquiry based learning but at the sane time I see numerous barriers. First, as a related arts teacher, I am not given an opportunity to plan alongside teachers. I am a drop off and pick up point. Second, I see students once a week for 45 minutes. Some quarters, I may only see some students two to three times depending on the school calendar. It is difficult to complete a research project if students do not come to the library on a regular schedule.

So the question is: How do I overcome these barriers?

Inquiry Learning:  How can we direct it better with our questioning?

Inquiry learning can be student-led or teacher-directed, but good questions can lead students in the right direction to a more successful inquiry-based learning activity.  Here are the steps, with questions to match:

Step 1: Tuning in

What do I want to know about _______?

What do I need to know?  

What do I know already? 

How do I know this?

Step 2: Finding out

What kinds of resources might help me to find out more about _______ and where can I find them?

How will I know if this information is accurate?

How will I keep a record of where I found my information about _______?

Step 3: Sorting out

Does this information help me to answer my questions about _______?

Have a recorded my references for the information that I have used?

Step 4: Reporting findings

What are my main points in my project?

How does this connect to what we have been learning in class?
