Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Spoilers)
So . . . yeah. I got a lot of problems with this season. This is gonna be a long one, so I'm dividing this review up into sections as listed below.
Jotaro Kujo isn't a good main character
Avdol died twice (Racism)
Kakyoin went to hell I guess (The rest of the weird stuff)
CONTENT WARNINGS FOR: discussions of racism, misogyny, and inappropriate depictions of children/sexualization of underage characters.
These are just my personal opinions of the show. Please proceed at your own risk and heed the content warnings. Let's get into it.
Jotaro Kujo isn't a good main character.
Look, I like Jotaro. He's got the vibes, but he falls short during the very long middle of this show. I think there are three reasons for this: the size of the cast, Jotaro's characterization, and Polnareff.
This season has a big main cast. And while Avdol and Kakyoin drop out for a bit, at any given time, there are a lot of characters sharing the screen. Thus it difficult for the main character to shine. Secondly, Jotaro's character is well developed, but it's not good for a main character in Jojo's. He fits well into the 'stoic, yet powerful' archetype. However, this means he doesn't talk much or often step into the spotlight. As such, he's not encountering many stands and their users on his own. And, lastly, once Polnareff joins the team, he essentially takes the place of the main character. He tends to be the one finding danger more frequently than the others, Jotaro included.
The whole time I was watching, I kept waiting for Jotaro to take a more prominent role in the episodes. Towards the end this started to happen, but so much of the season felt like waiting for the main character to do something, to say something, while I instead watched a french guy get himself into trouble again.
Okay, so my favorite aspect of Battle Tendency was Kars and my favorite thing about Kars was that he was barely clothed. All of the pillar men were walking around in hella revealing getups, and it made me a little more forgiving of the objectification of Lisa Lisa. Besides, Lisa Lisa was powerful in her own right. She held her own and served as a mentor before becoming a damsel in distress.
There's none of that in Stardust Crusaders.
Holly is our damsel in distress. And this would be fine, if it weren't for the fact that every time someone thinks back to her, we get images of her naked in vine bondage when she's literally at home, fully clothed. Susie Q and Holly aside, the only other women I can think of who showed up in the show are Anne, the runaway kid, and Mariah, the Bastet stand user. (And that woman that got turned into a fetus I guess). Anne gets felt up by Jotaro accidentally, is depicted naked with only a towel to cover herself with, and has to deal with a pedophile ape. Meanwhile, every shot of Mariah is just grossly objectifying her.
We get no characters like Lisa Lisa, and there's essentially no male objectification to balance out the female objectification. (By the way, I'm not saying objectifying both male and female characters is equality and makes objectification alright. It can even be argued that Battle Tendency's objectification of it's villains is misogynistic. But my point still stands.)
3. Avdol died twice (racism)
So, they managed to kill the Black character twice.
I know Avdol doesn't technically die the first time, but he's gone for a long time, and it's treated like a legitimate death. Then, of course, Avdol's the first to die once they get to Dio's hideout (very unceremoniously and suddenly). Everyone else gets long drawn out deaths, but he's just gone and that's it. This may not have been intentional racism, but it's still a product of racism.
And to be frank, Avdol's just the tip of the iceberg here.
The choice to have the characters go across the world could have worked out alright. But from the outset, you can feel the stereotyping setting in the moment they leave Japan.
I could fill libraries with every problematic depiction of the regions visited in the show. We'd be here forever. A lot of the stand users are from these regions and are depicted in strange, cartoon-ish ways. The cultures of each country are often depicted as backwards and startling. And overall, the depictions are inaccurate at best, and (more often than not) offensive and stereotypical at worst.
4. Kakyoin went to hell I guess (The rest of the weird stuff)
Some other issues I had with the season:
We get three depictions of children naked, and two (arguably three) scenes of children in inappropriate situations with adults. What the actual fuck man.
There are an excess of jokes about toilets, excrement, and flatulence to the point of it being disgusting.
The rules about stands are all over the place and lead to contradictions. Also I've already started Diamond is Unbreakable, and even though I'm on like the fifth episode, the use of stands and their abilities are way more interesting and creative.
Until Iggy's solo episode, I literally did not give a fuck about him.
Polnareff should've died, now come on now.
Joseph died and had a spiritual guidance moment with Jotaro, then just came back to life.
Jotaro's hat pissed me off, I can't even, y'all.
Iggy, the fucking farting dog, got to go to heaven with Avdol, but Kakyoin didn't get a spirit ascending to the clouds moment. So I guess Kakyoin went to hell.
Hol Horse is the best. Yeehaw.
Vanilla Ice had a cool outfit.
It was hard as fuck when Avdol just turned and walked away from Jotaro the first time they fought.
Also hard as fuck when Jotaro bluffed in poker without even looking at his cards.
Avdol coming back after his fake out death slayed, I was overjoyed.
Star Platinum stopping Jotaro's heart so he couldn't be detected by Dio was fucking awesome.
Dio hit Jotaro with a motherfucking steamroller.
I wanted to like this season. There were good things here and there and the premise is a good one, but there was just so much bad stuff, both in the execution of the premise and in terms of the vast problematic aspects.
I genuinely liked Avdol, Kakyoin, and Jotaro's characters. I thought the introduction of the stands was interesting. But there were issues with both the content being problematic and the show itself. Not only were the problems numerous, but so many of them were so egregious that it's impossible for me to look back on this season in a positive way.
Sadly, this season was very difficult to sit through and I can't recommend it given all of the incredibly problematic aspects, as well as the season itself having issues. I don't know. I still like Jojo's overall and I'm really enjoying Diamond is Unbreakable. The art style, story creativity, and characters all feel so much better. And frankly, if anyone's made it this far into this review/analysis, I'll be honest in saying I didn't even want to post this. I sort of just wanted to forget what I watched and reblog fan art of the season on my main blog. But I've inflicted this arbitrary obligation on myself and I'll be dammed if I don't fulfill it. So here we are.
