In Love with the Bad Guy: How a Hero Can Fall for the Villain

“Hi Lizard! Do you have any tips on making a likable couple? In my work in progress, the protagonist and the antagonist fall for each other. I’m concerned that their relationship will be boring or predictable. What do I do?”

So right off the bat, there is a bit of a conundrum. I think the bigger question here is how does a protagonist fall for the antagonist?

What sort of voice does your OC have (deep, quiet, whiny, etc.)?  Do they have any “ticks” or habits when they talk (saying like a lot, stuttering, trailing off, etc.)?

Cassius definitely has a deeper, smoother voice when he’s in control of himself. It becomes more rocky when he’s uncomfortable, caught off-guard, or not thinking clearly.

Miranda is much more soft and almost breathy, but not high pitched. When she snaps at people, it catches them off-guard because her voice becomes stronger and more solid.

Raphael. Hands down. He carries so many weapons at all times, he would sink if dropped into a pool. Plus, he has a short temper and when trying to sweet-talk the TSA agent wouldn’t work, he’d flip a table or something. Amara would laugh while he’s dragged off.

Browsing antique stores is always the most wild fucking time. I found an insanely cursed Sean Connery Barbie in my favorite antique store which is nothing new there are like 20 super cursed dolls in that store but they sell men’s flannels for $12 so

The antique store with like 50 pocket dimensions underneath it is playing “What A Feeling” from Flashdance. There’s a giant bloody wooden tooth hanging from chains. This is so surreal

So I have absolutely been inside this specific antique store (unless this is a pocket dimension that exists in many places, the store I know of is in downtown tacoma, WA). It’s spooky as hell, you can’t ever find anyone working there (the one time I did find a clerk he looked like he hadn’t left this garbage mansion in years, his hair was ginger and way too long and way too crunchy), it’s always disturbingly quiet despite being on a main downtown street, and to leave you have to meditate on that desire to summon an exit less you be trapped forever. The floors are incredibly uneven with lots of ramps and rooms on a slope. The library is my favorite part. There’s chairs and shit hanging from the ceiling all over the place. There are several false doors and windows. The inside in undeniably larger than the outside. This place is filled with a miasthma of chaotic energy.

To heal your soul, I recommend going to Mad Hat Tea just around the corner which also has a very real Vibe but it is healing and calming to a magical degree. A classmate of mine said once she had a terrible cold and went to Mad Hat between classes and asked the woman to give her something good for colds, she drank it without question and immediately her cold was gone. Shit theres so many like, old-magic-aura areas in downtown Tacoma guys, it’s crazy.

A Scene I’ll Probably Never Include From A Novel I Am Actually Writing

(But that isn’t an excuse for stealing)

“I’m in love with you.” “I didn’t ask you to be.” Her arms are crossed, lips tight—pulled drawstrings. It’s hard not to look at him. “You love me too.” She can feel how much he believes it, how confident to a fault he is—that tense line of energy willing her to look at him. His eyes always hurt to feel. “You don’t know that.” “I do.” He rises from his chair and crosses to where she sits in front of the fireplace. “I can read you like a book, Miss Wilde.” “Don’t call me ‘Miss Wilde’. I haven’t been that ‘Miss Wilde’ for several months.” She stares at the flames, willing them to shift into shapes—a deer running through the woods, a great tree falling, a bird taking flight— “I haven’t been that ‘Miss Wilde’ for several months. “Miranda,” he’s so coaxing, with his brown eyes, deep and pure, “please look at me.” She purses her lips and sends the bird flying from the flames and into the air where it was always meant to be—orange and red flashing as it soars over his dark curls. He doesn’t turn from her. She hates that he looks. She hates that he loves her. She hates that he has brown eyes that poke and prod and beckon her to steal a glance—just one—because where could the harm be? She squeezes her eyes shut, her whole body shaking. “Please just go,” she whispers—taught string words. “Miranda.” Her name. Why does it have to sound so nice on his breath? His hands wrap around hers, warm and solid and, everything. “Oh, would you stop it!” She rips her hands from his—SNAP—and meets his eye—oh god. Why? “It isn’t fair! I could fall in love with anyone, but not you. You aren’t supposed to be an option. You aren’t supposed to be anything. You’re just supposed to be an abstract concept because that makes things easier. For both of us.” Her hands are cupping his cheeks, running through his hair, trying to wipe the clueless look off his face. His cravat is wrinkled. “Why don’t you know?” Soft now. “Why can’t you figure it out? Why do I have to be the one with all the secrets, and the hurt, and the longing for the simplicity of what used to be?” To his credit, he’s silent for once. She doesn’t like it. “Please respond. Silence doesn’t suit you.” He brings his hands to her cheeks. His thumbs move back and forth. She hadn’t noticed the tears until he wipes them away. “I love you.” Simple. She hates that he’s simple when she wants him to be complex. She hates that his hands feel like they’re meant to meet her skin. She hates that his eyes are beautiful. She hates that she loves him. She leans forward and presses her lips against his for the second time. She can only pray it won’t be the last.
