I am watching "Outlander" for the first time and both my girlfriend and I are absolutely appalled by Roger MacKenzie. In my eyes he is the epitome of the toxic 'good-guy' syndrome. The type of guy that always paints himself as the victim, and manipulates the narrative to fit his own narcissistic world views. I had never encountered a male romantic lead that I hate this much. The fact that "Outlander" depicts the Roger / Bree as a romance as one we should root for is outrageous. #FreeBree.

Both times Jamie gives Claire something of Ellen’s, he stands behind her. To surprise her, yes.

But both times are also emblematic of where they are in their relationship.

On their wedding night - Jamie gives Claire his mother’s pearls. He stands behind her, to put the pearls on her. Note how he is close to her, yet does not remain close. He is standing, then shifts to sit beside her as he explains to her what the pearls are, and what they mean to him.

He is seeking closeness with her, through this gift.

Contrast this to the ring he gives her, some 24 years later. Yet again he stands behind her, to surprise her. But this time he crouches down to her level. Almost to embrace her. To literally be at her back, and at her side. To support her. To remain close as he explains to her what the ring is, and how much it means to him. To be close enough to see all of her reactions. Close enough to kiss, and cherish.

For his heart is wide open. She knows just how much she loves him - and he, her.

Both times, the only way Claire can react is with a kiss. To show him just how much she cherishes these gifts - these pieces of himself. To show him just how much she loves him, even if she can’t find the words.
