OK, one call to Nintendo later, I got the skinny on letting other users on the Switch play on your island.
I have two Switches, one that stays at home, and one I carry with me. I have Animal Crossing installed on the second device.
I tried to add The Kid as a user on that machine, but it wouldn’t let her account play ANY of the digital games, not just ACNH.
Apparently that’s by design. If you have more than one Switch, one of them is designated your “Primary” console. On that one, all users on the device can play all games. Your other console is the “Secondary” device, and only you, the person who bought the games, can play anything on it.
You can swap games and save files between them with abandon...for every game but ACNH. That game is locked to the Switch on which it was originally installed.
However, the Nintendo rep confirmed that they are indeed working on a program (app, whatever) that would allow you to transfer your save info, and that it’s coming “sooner rather than later”. So at least that’ll change.
So if that’s your problem, and you don’t want to buy two copies, you have two options right now, both of which are a tad inconvenient.
1) Transfer the game license to your primary console. You’ll be forced to start a new island, but once that’s done, other users on that Switch can register as villages. Downside - you have to start a new game, but you can switch the game license BACK to that console, and your save data will remain.
2) Make the second Switch your primary console. There’s no limit to the number of times you can swap them. Then you can add users and let them play the game. Downside - when you do that, it removes the ability of people to play games on your “home” system, so you’d have to swap it back and forth.
Seems like a lot of work. Once you can swap saves between systems, that’ll probably be less of a hassle.
