Seraph felt another presense in the hallways. Someone was there. That was not something she was used to at this hour. She had run back to the school at a late hour to grab a book left behind in the locker. Funny that the school was still open.

Either way, she turned around with caution, fearing the person may be up to no good. “Who’s there?”

Hiro yawned, trudging along the hallways half-asleep. “That’s the last time I try to marathon a book series in one go,” he muttered to himself between yawns. “Maybe if I keep a pager…” He shrugged as he continued along, keeping his hands in his pockets as he attempted to balance his schoolbag on top of his head. …? Hiro stopped as he heard someone else’s voice. While it didn’t particularly concern him, it was rather peculiar that someone else was out at this hour. “I’m Batman,” he said dryly, continuing forwards to see who else was making trouble in the neighborhood.

Seraph stared in the area where she knew this person was. Batman? What a peculiar name...

"Well then Batman. What are you doing here at this hour?" Seraph isn't one to usually be suspicious but she doesn't like the looks of being a dark hallway by herself with some mysterious person there. Sure, she could defend herself if need be but she really prayed it wouldn't have to go there.

Religious meaning? Oh right…people did have religions. She had actually studied those, back home. It was part of spiritual journeys and encouraged gaining your own philosophy on life. That was really something they wanted to teach everyone. She supposed it was alright they had religion, it wouldn’t really bother her. As long as well…she wasn’t blamed for having a different view. Then again, Heat didn’t sound like he knew all that much about it. He, at least, probably wasn’t truly religious. Somehow, that made her feel a little more safe.

Her mind then snapped to the other part of what Heat said. “A…present?” She shyed away a bit. “No…that’s really not something you should be doing. I don’t need things to be happy, Heat…” And she’d feel bad considering how the holiday seemed to be religious. She didn’t want to get excited over something so material when that wasn’t the point. That was not what she was taught.

  Although…the present did sound really nice.

She sighed. Being here was really pushing her to give into pointless desires, it seemed. Maybe she really was lacking on her training as of late…

“Yeah, but…” He hadn’t even thought about it before blurting it out, “…it’d make me happy. I mean, you came from some place where you don’t get stuff, right? I mean, seeing you getting a gift would be… good. Um… yeah.” Heat finished lamely.

He took a minute to mentally yell at himself about how dumb he sounded. Did he just seriously end it with an, “um, yeah”?! He could have sighed if he didn’t look like he was tired of Seraph—which he wasn’t in anyway! God, where was his brain even headed? It was all over the place, when he sat next to her.

"That's really sweet of you. I suppose it would probably make me happy as well." Guilty, but happy. Seraph didn't want to refuse an offer like that though. It just seemed really rude. Not to mention that Heat was really trying, which was something she should encourage. At least it'd keep him from doing anything violent while he was back at home...

"I guess it's only fair that I come along then..." She nodded slowly so as to make it seem more official. "Just be sure to tell everyone that you're bringing someone along...I would like to be sure that my presense is allowed." 

He should probably also mention that it was a girlfriend that he was bringing along but she really had no idea if that was considered alright in his family. At least she could just dress more like a boy if they were against the idea of a girl coming along with him. There were sometimes upsides to this, at least...

Everyone was different. Yet in the end, wasn’t everyone the same? They came from the same place and are made out of the same things. Then how…did they become so different? This she really had always wanted to know. Unfortunately, there was probably only one being out there that really knew.

“I take it you’re different from the people around here too? You…don’t talk to me the same way they do. I’m fascinated, really.” She’d never meet people like this back home. Not only did he have such an odd name, but his style was very bizarre. On Seraph’s level of bizzarre even, and that was saying something.

” Hum, I guess you could say that. I’m just interested in people, so why treat anyone differently before I get to know them.” He could say there were more reasons, not for the reasoning she gave, but that was a whole different story. “Though I feel pleased to know you’re fascinated by me in a way.”

She smiled back though what he was a bit odd. "Interested in people? Do you just not know a lot about them?" That would also put them on  the same page in many ways. It's not like Seraph knew much about the average person either. She was raised mostly in isolation.

"I'm afraid, I'm not like most people though...so you won't learn all that much from me." Unless he was into Buddhism. That was her forte.

Seraph seemed to spend a lot of time studying as of late but there was another presense entering the room that intrigued her today.

She turned around to see a young girl with red eyes enter. How beautiful they looked on her. 

Seraph approached the other and asked in her best library voice, "Are your eyes always like that? They look...very nice on you."

Tae, seeing Seraph stay behind, flashed her own smile at her. “Nice to meet you, Seraph.”  She paused.  “You may already know this, but I am Miss Asakura.  The Journalism teacher.” She walked from her spot to a students desk.  “Thank you for running an errand, I know you must have other things to do.” Tae at this point was reaching for straws.  She wondered why she chose this profession.  “Are you interested in journalism at all?”  She finally asked, hoping Seraph would say yes.

Seraph shrugged. “I never quite thought about it. We didn’t get to see news much where I grew up so the idea never came to mind. Would you mind explaining a bit about it to me?” 

Seraph isn’t completely clueless on Journalism. Her knowledge is limited but she knows enough to probably get by. But she asked anyway, since it seemed this teacher wanted to talk to someone, after all. She had to think of something to keep this all going, after all.

Unfortunately, she had to reveal her heavy foreign nature, pretty early on in meeting her. Oh well, it was too late to revoke that now.

Tae tilted her head, resting her thumb and forefinger on her chin. “Eh?  Not a lot of news…that’s strange.  Was it just a thing with your family?”  Tae didn’t think to ask where Seraph was from, it seemed inappropriate.  

She closed her eyes, a cocksure grin spreading on her face. “Journalism, my dear, is an art.  Art in its purest form.”  Tae began. Seraph had opened quiet a can of worms, here…

Seraph took a seat and nodded. She had a feeling she'd started a long winded conversation so sitting down would be the best option right now. Better that than standing there like she didn't belong. 

"Many things are an art. And...I always loved art." Again, the only art she saw back home were the decoration on the walls of the temple but they were definitely all beautiful in their own ways. But the things she saw in this world here were always more extravagent and lovable. 

"What sort of art is it? I have recently discovered how many there are..." She was actually really curious now. This is the sort of thing she came to this school to learn. Maybe it wasn't such a waste of time to deliver those papers, after all.

Seraph blinked and stared for a moment. That sounded a little more desperate than it needed to. She was going to laugh but held in that urge. It was sweet that he wanted her around that much at least. 

It was all a question of if she would be comfortable there. Or more accurately if other people would be comfortable with her around. It wasn’t like most people to allow strangers into their house. “Heat…I would love too…but isn’t that up to your family?” She wasn’t really part of it, after all. And it would be rude to intrude on something like that. 

Not mention it was during holidays. And well, Seraph didn’t really celebrate any of the holidays that took place during that time. She wouldn’t know what the customs were for any of them at all.. How disappointing.

Heat made a face. “Like I said, we have enough rooms.” It came out more forcefully than he had expected. “Besides, my parents would be overjoyed when they find out I made friends—and err… I guess, a girlfriend.” Man, that still was difficult for him to say. 

“I mean, if you don’t want to, I can’t force you. We’d have a bunch of family members running by and it gets a bit hectic. My mom always makes me put the damn star on the tree because when I was younger apparently my erm…cousin, I guess you can say, fell off the stool when his cat bumped into him.” What a loser.

“Is putting a star on a tree really so important?” There she went being so foreign again. But she couldn’t help it. What he said really sounded interesting. Not to mention a family affair such as that, with everyone together. It seemed so nice. Sometimes she really regretted not having a family of her own to share memories with.

Maybe she really should go with him. But…that would be intruding and…well. The main concern is how people will react to her. Such a foreign “girl” who just happens to be dating their son and/or family member. Wouldn’t that seem a bit odd to most people?

Heat shrugged. “I guess you can say that. I mean, it makes the tree look nice and there’s some religious meaning to it, but whatever.” He never paid attention to his parents anyways. Christmas was just there so he could get free food and free presents. That, and be annoyed by family members. 

There was a smile on his face as he continued, “If you go, I’ll make sure I put a present under the tree for you.”

“…The whole of society,” Hikawa says after a moment. “It is essential that each of us not only knows our role, but has the humility and discipline needed to perform it.” 

He tilts his head slightly upward. 

“Just imagine,” he says with a far off gaze, “a world in which our species operated together, as one, in seamless perfection. A world of absolute order… A quieting, at last, of the cacophony of humankind’s purposeless, squabbling voices.” 

Hikawa looks back down at Seraph.

“Unfortunately, it cannot all happen at once… So that is why we must begin to work towards this ideal here, with the young.”

Quieting? She really had no idea what her vice principal meant at this point. She had a feeling that he was getting really into philsophical views on the world though. And well, Seraph couldn’t help but put in some input of her own on the matter.

“I always felt that people needed to understand their relationship with the world, for things to get better. We’re all one being, after all.” 

Seraph, why must you always get into this? You’re  going to get in trouble from your beliefs one of these days…

She kept her explanation brief this time, she didn’t want to get into a stern argument with someone of such a high status within her school.

Well then, this is different. A student who not only appears interested in his vision, but also seems to share it. To some extent, at least. Commendable for one who claims to have not set foot in a school before.

“Indeed… You are ahead of a majority of your peers already, then, if that is what you actually believe.”

Hikawa pauses. He finds himself growing slightly more curious about her past.

“Where did you receive your education prior to enrolling here?”

Seraph was content. He seemed to be interested in her. So despite his odd aura he may not have been as bad as she had previously thought. She knew judging people from first impressions was bad. Back home, she would be shamed for such thought.

"I was homeschooled...back in the temple where I grew up. It was...a very different way of learning than they have here." For one, there were no desks, and very different values were had here. Materialism was looked down upon greatly, and there were meditation breaks three times a day.

She honestly couldn't say which form of learning she liked better.

Seraph paused, taken aback by her sudden question and then stepped back and bowed to the teacher before her. It was the most formal way to greet someone from where she came from anyway. 

“I’m Seraph. I just came here from the office area and they wanted me to run an errand. I didn’t mean to disturb you.” She turned to head for the door but had yet to move. After a moment she turned back around and stood there.

It took a moment but she could feel that this teacher wanted her here. Well, not her, but someone at least. And she was the only one here currently. Sometime desperate emotions were easy to pick out in a person’s energy. Seraph didn’t even have to try to look for that one.

She awkwardly flashed a smile. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Al Saiduq?” she repeats, to make sure she can actually say this name right. How peculiar that sounded. “I think it may take me a while to remember that one.”

She nearly sighs again. More things to get used to around here. Her upbringing really did make all this more difficult for her. She looks up a moment later and smiles though. No time to be upset about things, she has a teacher standing before her, and that means it’s time to show respect.

She sends a bow his direction and smiles again. “I really hope we can get to know each other well over this year. I love learning about this land…well and the other ones out there.”

” Ah, well feel free to take your time then. I will probably have a hard time remember names because they’re so many students anyway.” Even if that probably wasn’t the truth, seeing as He loved to remember people. But still he’d have to make conversation some how.

” Well I am the same with that as you are. I do enjoy being able to learn about students, everyone is just so interesting.” He says still smiling.” And well I’m happy to be able to teach you such things.

“That’s great. Honestly, I think I’m the only student who went out of their way to go to school and learn. I really don’t know all that much about everything here. I was raised really differently.” Though most people can probably tell by just the way she dresses and acts. Most people wouldn’t run around in a turtle neck and shorts all the time. Nor would they be so amazed by simple things like she is.

“I suppose that just means we can teach each other, right?”

She frowned. “I-I see.” She was really hoping for a happier story having to do with the rain, considering how little she got to see it, but that sounded just awful. She felt bad that he had to deal with a place like that. If only there was a way to make it better for him to live at home. Or even for him to live here. She sighed, she could try thinking of something.

“I’m sorry you have to deal with all that.” She sort of gave him a hug though it was more like she just put her arms around him while he awkwardly sat there for like 5 seconds, but that was alright. “Do you have to go back during the break in the winter?” Most people around here seemed to be doing that anyway. Seraph still hadn’t decided if she was going to do the same herself. More likely she’d stay at the school because it seemed more home than home was these days.

“H-Huh—what?” That hug had surprised Heat and nearly made him forget his train of thought. It took a few seconds for him to recover, but after clearing his throat, he finally managed to come up with a legitimate response, although his cheeks were still a bit pink.

“I-I er… Yeah, my mom’s expecting me for that stupid Christmas party we do every year. She’s weird like that. I guess it’s because our house is kinda large—” Well, it was nearly fucking underground and it was considered large only because his parents and Agni were living there. “—and she never sees her side of the family or something. My dad’s bringing in his family too. It’s just one huge mess.” He just hoped Christmas sweaters weren’t involved, but seeing his little nephew was always nice.

Heat suddenly felt as though he had been talking about himself for a little too long. That wasn’t what a good boyfriend did, right? He looked over at Seraph again and asked, “W-What do you plan on doing?”

She shrugged and sighed. “I really hadn’t though about it much…I mean unlike you I don’t reeally have family or anything tying me to where I grew up. And going back would just mean more studying, meditating and no technology, good food or any other luxury. More than likely, I’ll just stay here and just read since I don’t really know where to go for fun, anyway.”

She knew Heat was probably complaining about going home and seeing his family but Seraph couldn’t help but be a little jealous. She’d never thought about it much until coming to this school but recently…she realized just how little she actually had. Then again, most people who went to a boarding school like this weren’t really people who wanted to be with their families. The thought couldn’t help but make her a little sad. Was she better off?

“E-Er… Well, come along with me then!” He wasn’t quite sure why he had blurted that out. “I mean, I have to ride the bus to the train station and then from there, I’d have to ride the train for a few hours so my dad could pick me up. It’s not that bad of a trip.” Just pretty long, he would imagine. 

“There’s technology and shit back at my place. We also have a pretty big house, so you can have a room if you’d like.”

Seraph knocked on the door to the room. She was initially supposed to be dropping something off since she had stopped by the office and was headed this way. Apparently new teachers had a bunch of paper work to fill out. They worked just as hard as students, it seemed. 

When she saw the teacher with her head on the desk though, Seraph froze. Should she be saying something to cheer her up? She looked so unhappy. 

“Uh…excuse me. I was sent to drop all this off.” She held the papers out in front of her. She was still debating if she should ask the teacher what was wrong. From experience she’d learn that many adults were stubborn and didn’t want help from people younger than them.

Tae straightened herself quickly.  She stood, took the papers with a smile and thanked the girl. She sat back down and looked them over.  Feeling rude, and longing for a distraction, she asked the girl her name.  “Who might you be, miss?  I don’t recall you in my class…” She hoped this one had good grades.

She handed each paper out with indifference, but inside she felt squeamish as she handed out the ones with the worst grades. She regretted sending those ones home with work. As they filed out, she softly hit her head on her desk. “Damnit.” she whispered.  She felt ineffective as a teacher.

“Then…what do you do for entertainment?” Seraph was curious. Most people around here seemed to play video games or go on the internet or something. All Seraph did was walk around and read. Occassionally she would explore other hobbies and try to expand her horizons but that was not always possible. Around here, there were more options. Though, she needed some guidance on what she should be picking. Heat wouldn’t be that terrible of a choice for guidance. At least…not for her. He seemed to try and help her, though it was debatable what he’d say to people he liked less.

Heat thought about it. Did she meant what he did back at the Junkyard or here? Well, either way, at least he had something to talk about. It beats being awkward and always waiting for something to happen. “Back home, there’s a huge ass lake people would swim in… well, not me, though.” He made a face at the thought before continuing.

“And well, I used to go out and buy shit for my mom—like groceries and all that. It was a pretty empty place, but sometimes you could just go off and explore the area. You gotta be careful when it rains though. You probably shouldn’t even be out when it rains. It’s just all dark and you don’t see the sun for days.” Heat rambled before realizing he was going off topic. “Err—um… I drew a lot back home too. I had huge windows because my mom didn’t want me suffocating in the paint fumes. It was bad for me or something.”

What else did he do? Right, computer. “I go online occasionally. I mean, I had a scanner at home and I’d just scan my crap and color it there. There’re a lot of picture sharing sites too, but I just run a little blog on the side and post pictures there. It’s not really that interesting.” God damn, he sounded more boring than a history text book right now.

Seraph listened intently anyway. She wasn’t bored by hearing these things. In fact, she hadn’t even known of the internet until moving here, and it was rather interesting to hear about what could be done outside the walls of the temple she grew up in. And he talked about his drawing again. She really needed to remind herself to get some of those drawings of his into her posession. She was curious, after all.

“It rained a lot where you lived?” She only asked because something about the rain always made her feel at peace. Nostalgic even, like she was remembering a place long ago. Not that she really was. That would be too convinient.  Either way, she had to know. Maybe he was lucky enough to see rain more than she ever did.

Heat nodded with a scowl on his face. “It rained like crazy for days—weeks even. We’re all used to it by now, but it’s really dumb. The sky gets so dark that you can’t even see the sun. And by the time it stops raining, most of the kids probably even forgot what the sun even looked like.” It was just gray, rainy, sometimes humid. It was pretty shitty back home, but hey, it was home.

“Then during nasty summer days, the sun looks like it’s a different color. It’s really fucked up.”

She frowned. "I-I see." She was really hoping for a happier story having to do with the rain, considering how little she got to see it, but that sounded just awful. She felt bad that he had to deal with a place like that. If only there was a way to make it better for him to live at home. Or even for him to live here. She sighed, she could try thinking of something.

  "I'm sorry you have to deal with all that." She sort of gave him a hug though it was more like she just put her arms around him while he awkwardly sat there for like 5 seconds, but that was alright. "Do you have to go back during the break in the winter?" Most people around here seemed to be doing that anyway. Seraph still hadn't decided if she was going to do the same herself. More likely she'd stay at the school because it seemed more home than home was these days.

Hikawa clasps his hands behind his back. “Your first time in a school? Odd…” He studies Seraph for a moment. She is of high school age, and yet… Hmm. Home-schooled, perhaps? He’s not terribly interested in an explanation right now, so he does not pursue the subject.

“But you are correct,” he continues. “If you are here, you will most certainly be educated about the world, and how you may best become a functional part of the whole.”

“The whole? What do you mean by that, sir?” Does he mean society as a whole? Because she was really working on becoming part of the modern society. She sure didn’t fit with it like how she was now. And if he meant the school as a whole, she was adapting to that one at least. And hey compared to everyone else, she probably skipped class the least of all the students around. Though…if he meant the world as a whole, well then he was really speaking her language. But she doubted that’s what he meant. Not too many believed in becoming one with your surroundings as strongly as she did.

“…The whole of society,” Hikawa says after a moment. “It is essential that each of us not only knows our role, but has the humility and discipline needed to perform it.” 

He tilts his head slightly upward. 

“Just imagine,” he says with a far off gaze, “a world in which our species operated together, as one, in seamless perfection. A world of absolute order… A quieting, at last, of the cacophony of humankind’s purposeless, squabbling voices.” 

Hikawa looks back down at Seraph.

“Unfortunately, it cannot all happen at once… So that is why we must begin to work towards this ideal here, with the young.”

Quieting? She really had no idea what her vice principal meant at this point. She had a feeling that he was getting really into philsophical views on the world though. And well, Seraph couldn't help but put in some input of her own on the matter.

  "I always felt that people needed to understand their relationship with the world, for things to get better. We're all one being, after all." 

Seraph, why must you always get into this? You're  going to get in trouble from your beliefs one of these days...

She kept her explanation brief this time, she didn't want to get into a stern argument with someone of such a  high status within her school.
