This isn't for me

I was on Tumblr in the early 2010s and left when I felt I’d outgrown the community. I came back to it a couple of weeks ago in the hope I would be able to carve out a place for my Night Vale fandom instead of confusing my friends on twitter with WTNV tweets.

The personal attack from My_Niece_Janice on Monday shook me up quite a bit. They projected stuff I’d never said then gaslit me, someone they’d never had any interaction with before, and that was quite harmful. I’m in my 30s so I’ve been around the block, and this is no way to behave on social media. Thank you to the strangers who leapt in to tell them the were out of line. I really do appreciate that, but I’m not up for risking my safety with everything I do, and I don’t feel tumblr is a safe community for me.

So, I probably won’t post or re-blog here again. I may keep my account as a lurk account and just fave stuff I like. I’ll be posting fanfic on AO3, which has been a far more supportive experience for me, as NB_Cecil and will find another home for my visual stuff, little comments and theories.

I have enjoyed so much wonderful creative stuff I’ve seen in my short time in Night Vale tumblr. Thank you so much to everyone whose art and writing I have delighted in.

Ik it doesn't exactly fit with the story of them being like identical but also opposite but I kinda like the idea of trans Kevin, I don't really have much to say about it but I like it

My headcanon Cecil is deffo nonbinary. I feel weird about a trans Kevin though.

Trans folk, like cis folk, run the whole spectrum from "mostly good" to "mostly bad" traits, BUT we're so often demonised in the media and fiction and one of the things I love about Night Vale is that it doesn't demonise marginalised identities. If Cecil's trans then it's possible Kevin is some type of trans too--it's also possible he's cis--but urgh, he's such a cruel, heartless character who is so eager to discard anyone who doesn't fit his narrow model of how people should be, I would have trouble investing in a trans Kevin headcanon. I think Kevin's far more likely to be a Cis Abled White Gay™. Y'know the sort...

My New Fave Piece of Fictional Writing on Mental Illness

***Massive spoiler for Ghost Stories ahead***

I’ve been listening over and over to the epilogue from Ghost Stories and wow, is it poignant, especially because it has some similarities to my relationship with my own siblings.

I think it’s my new favourite piece of fictional writing about mental illness. Cecil’s mom isn’t glamorised or demonised, she was just someone with an undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. Her family aren’t portrayed as heroic martyrs, but neither is the impact of her illness on them diminished. It just is. It’s facts told with compassion for the people these facts are about and that’s truly beautiful, sad and poignant.

I haven’t been this into a fandom since pre-season 3 Sherlock and I’m so grateful for the contrast between how Finknor interact with fans vs. Moffat. Moffat would go out of his way in the show to kill off head canons he didn’t like in really cruel ways, whereas Finknor just quietly feed us a bit more evidence to confirm our theories. This is so important because some identities don’t get to see themselves reflected much in fiction, and when they do, they’re often pathologised, pitied, or mocked. I love how Finknor show not tell; we don’t need them to announce that yes, Carlos is autistic, that line about the chalk board basically confirmed it for those who need it to be canon. I love you Night Vale, please never stop being awesome 💜🖤

Fics in progress

I’m working on a really trans angsty Cecilos fic which doesn’t resolve happily at the end (don’t worry, it’s temporary; I wrote a short sequel where everything is fine again before I’d finished the first draft). I understand this may be an unpopular move when everyone’s still squeeing over the wedding, but I need to write Cecilos with these trans feels.

Probably won’t post it here bc it’s a) long; and b) contains smut and I don’t want to have to tag this blog as “adult”. So maybe I’ll put it on AO3 when it’s done and link it here… Anyway, fan fic is kinda pouring out of me atm. I’m basically crying Cecilos, so it shouldn’t be too long ‘til I post it.

Alternate Ending

Tiny Cecil decides beautiful Carlos would be a better god and manages to redirect the faith of tiny Night Vale to him. Assuming gods like, run on belief, this effectively deifies Carlos

(“But I’m not a god, I’m a scientist!” yeah well…. both now? oops)

Anyway, this positions him to fight Huntokar for both Night Vales… but he’s not very experienced at this, so he almost loses until… well. Options include a fresh rallying cry from his Cecil, help from his team… both or something else?

It’s a weird and cheesy thought, but I like it and it gives a happy ending

Yeah, I was kinda thinking this too. Cecil practically worships Carlos anyway and Tiny Cecil appears to be pretty similar to his full-size counterpart in his attraction to Carlos, so I'm totally down with a headcanon where Carlos becomes the unwitting god of Tiny Night Vale.

I've been thinking about making a series of Svitz tourism posters for a while but I'm no artist. Anyway, I was really taken with the idea of the plywood shack hostel Cecil stays in being a YHA property, as the YHA will always have a special place in my heart. Sometimes YHA hostels have posters around the place advertising other hostels you can stay at, so I made this one. The thought of it just being casually pinned to a hostel noticeboard amuses me. I collaged photos I've taken within the last year, alongside the YHA logo, some ink, pre-made flower decals and I used an online Word Art (remember that??!) generator to make the text outline which I then coloured in by hand. I'm super proud of this but the standard of Night Vale fan art is so high I'm a bit nervous posting it.
