Allegiance, a musical about Japanese-Americans in United States internment camps during World War II, will begin performances on Broadway in October at a Shubert theater to be announced later. “The show’s backdrop is the imprisonment of innocent Americans simply because we looked like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor, but the story is universal – people falling in love, getting married, having a family,” Mr. Takei said. “The musical will find an audience because whether you are white, black, Latino, young or old, people can identify with the idea of family and the stresses put on a family, which in this case were enormous.”

The Allegiance Lab Project rehearsal period lasted all of three weeks, which is not nearly enough time when working on an original piece. So we all worked at a breakneck pace. We had quite a few brand-new ensemble numbers, some new solo pieces, reconfigurations of older songs, and one that actually made a return from the 2011 workshop.

We were performing mostly for industry professionals in the hope that we find a theater, a brand new home on Broadway, for our pride and joy. I honestly don’t know when we’ll get any news about it, but I am confident that the lab will not be the last time those incredible Jay Kuo compositions will be heard by an audience.

Allegiance, the award-winning new American musical about Japanese American internment camps on U.S. soil during World War II, is planning to arrive on Broadway in spring 2014, a representative for the production confirmed to Playbill.com. Tony Award winner Lea Salonga will star.

An official announcement of the production's Broadway plans and casting has not been made.

The musical had its premiere at the The Old Globe last fall. TV actor Telly Leung and film and TV star George Takei (Mr. Sulu of "Star Trek") were among stars of the Old Globe world premiere and were also a part of a recent New York City developmental lab.

Renowned musical theatre composer and lyricist Scott Alan will soon host a reading of Home, written by Christy Hall and himself, on July 1, 2013, directed by Stafford Arima.

It was announced on the musical’s official website that the reading will be led by Diane Ladd (Wendy), Betsy Wolfe (Katherine), and Allie Trimm (Kat).

SDD: Was everyone expecting the show to have a chance to make the move to Broadway or was that a bit of a surprise?

TL: The ”business” part of “show business” is always tricky, and it’s amazing to me that anything gets to Broadway! All the stars have to align for the show to happen: the right house has to be available, the funding has to be in place, all the creatives’ schedules have to line up, etc. I know that if and when the show makes it to Broadway, I will be celebrating with immense joy because I will know that it took years of blood, sweat, tears (and tons of good luck) to get there.

In celebration of Asian Heritage month, the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee of Actors' Equity Association and ReImagined World Entertainment will present "The Asian American Composers and Lyricists Project," a free evening of original works created and sung by Asian American theatre artists.

The evening will be directed by Alan Muraoka ("Sesame Street") and emceed by Ann Harada (Broadway's "Cinderella"), featuring original music and lyrics by Adam Gwon, Timothy Huang, Christine Toy Johnson, Leon Ko, Felice Kuan, Robert Lee, Yan Li and Jason Ma.

The company of stage actors scheduled to perform includes: Cindy Cheung, Karl Josef Co, Joshua Dela Cruz, Marc De La Cruz, Daniel J. Edwards, Ali Ewoldt, Brooke Ishibashi, Joanne Javien, Christine Toy Johnson, Brian Jose, Raymond J. Lee, Telly Leung, Jose Llana, Jaygee Macapugay, Helen Park, Diane Phelan, Ann Sanders and Hansel Tan.

Telly Leung is coming to London!

Telly Leung: Live in London will feature a selection of material from the shows that have shaped Telly's career so far alongside songs from his debut album, some personal favourites, and one or two never-before-seen surprises exclusive to his London solo debut.

He will also be joined by Once's Declan Bennett.

Musical theatre composer Joe Iconis, whose music has been heard on the NBC musical series "Smash," will host 22@54, featuring original songs by emerging writers from NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program's class cycle 22, May 22 at 54 Below.

The concert, set to begin at 11 PM, will benefit Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP).
