Bach’s Signature: Read the one note from four directions, starting from the left, clockwise. Using three distinct clefs and two key signatures, the single not
e alternately reads “B”, “A”, “C”, “H”. In German notation, “B” is the designation for B-flat, and “H” the designation for B-natural.

Ann and Phil
We’re gearing up for two concerts at the University Musical Society in Ann Arbor this weekend, marking our first time in Michigan with Alan Gilbert (our last concerts at UMS were part of former Music Director Lorin Maazel’s final tour with the Orchestra in 2009). The Phil has been a steady presence in Michigan since 1916. Under Leonard Bernstein, the Orchestra gave the world premiere of Aaron Copland’s Inscape at UMS in 1967 (on a program that also included Lenny’s own Overture to Candide, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2). Lenny previously brought the Orchestra there in 1963 with William Schuman’s Symphony No. 3 and two works by Brahms - a composer also featured in tomorrow’s concert when Alan conducts his first symphony. Above are some shots, courtesy of our Digital Archives, of the Orchestra’s 1955 visit to Ann Arbor under then-Music Director Dimitri Mitropoulos. The program was an inventive one, featuring the overture to Kabalevsky’s Colas Breugnon, Gould’s Show Piece for Orchestra, Skalkottas’s Greek Dances, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10.
pet peeve: when people use the term song in lieu of the term piece
