It seems that there is a prevailing notion in society that little lost girls are cute and in need of help. However, sometimes there is something incredibly sinister in their long hair or shiny smile.
So, here's a top 5 list of the scariest little women in movies.
1. Samara from The Ring and The Ring 2
After these two films anyone stopped in the street by a little girl with long dark hair would think twice when she asks for help finding her mother. Portrayed by Daveigh Chase in Gore Verbinski's The Ring (a remake of the original of the 1998 Japanese Ringu) and by Kelly Stables in Hideo Nakata's The Ring 2 Samara can be defined as the essence of the phrase ' a scary little girl'. Furthermore, what is scary about her is not that she is a personification of pure evil but that she is determined to achieve what she wants no matter what. And she is even more dangerous for TV and movie fans - she occasionally crawls out of the TV.
Her best moment - crawling out of the well in The Ring 2 after Naomi Watts' character, who is shouting at her 'I'm not your mummy!'
2. Claudia from Interview with a Vampire
Kirsten Dunst's little vampire child, who lives along with vampires Brad Pitt's Louis and Tom Cruise's Lestat, is quite scary despite the numerous jokes in some scene in Neil Jordan's film. Yes, maybe Claudia's hair is cute and curly and her smile is shiny and pretty but this is what makes her even more ominous. The fact that throughout the film she never really grasps how to protect herself and withhold her urges to attack victims is what strips her of her tainted innocence.
Her best moment - there's several of them: this may either be the scene where she has pushes her piano teacher off the bench after attacking him for having hit her or hiding a woman's corpse under a pile of dolls. Actually, her best and scariest moment of them all might be the scene where she murders Lestat, proving she is no porcelain doll.
Portrayed by Christina Ricci in the two original films about the Addams family, Wednesday Addams definitely deserves a place on this top 5. Despite her macabre sense of humour is quite amusing and makes for at least half of the jokes in the creepy family's adventures, she has now become a connotation for anyone who wants to write/draw/dress like a gothic little girl. Also, she seems to possess an arsenal of deadly weapons.
Her best moment - when she is trying to hurt/potentially murder her brother Pugsley. Also, any time she decapitates a doll.
The role of twelve-year-old smoking Mathilda was the part which secured Natalie Portman's entry to Hollywood. This rather ominous spin on Lolita directed by Luc Besson told the story of a little girl left alone and the hit man Leon (Jean Reno) who takes her in, and the relationship they develop. Yes, both of them influenced each other and as she taught him to read he taught her how to use all types of guns. However, the film treads dangerous waters as Mathilda slowly matures and attempts to flirt with... well, Leon.
Her best moment: walking next to Leon and carrying the flowerpot, shooting any type of gun.
5. The Grady twins in The Shining
The Grady girls are like the little girls you see innocently playing tea party in someone's garden. However, when you're in a haunted hotel and you're not sure if they exist, they become increasingly ominous. They have nice hair, beautiful blue dresses (which slightly remind of Alice's outfit in Alive in Wonderland) and in general they look quite proper. However, they are still the scariest twins in movie history.
Their best moment - when they both turn up and come at the character/the audience.
