Major kudos to the writers for going through with this tough scene.

It would have been so much easier for them to have Todomatsu reveal his true reason for not picking one of them and have them all laugh together.

But they know Todomatsu, from all his scenes before, struggles with balancing his identity as an individual and as a fellow NEET. They know he’s not one to mince his words and will often make decisions that hurt himself and his brothers in the process, even if it’s to protect them.

There could have been a more satisfying outcome, but it was one Todomatsu himself couldn’t see in the end. And it was profoundly more important to show us the extent of this problem rather than a happy conclusion.
