A Complete Character Analysis of Sgt. Anacostia Quartermaine

Anacostia Quartermaine. She’s been a giant question mark since day one but is slowly starting to reveal her true intentions. However, my curiosity still remains about her treatment of Raelle and whether or not it’s special. I rewatched all of the episodes with a special focus on her and here’s what I’ve managed to find. This is a long one, I’m sorry. There’s a whole lot to it, I understand if you have to tap out halfway through or skip to the conclusion, but I’d like to think it’s a thorough compilation of everything Anacostia has shown through her actions, words, and body language.

Motherland: Fort Salem. A Timeline

I’ve have seen a bunch of random posts about how Raelle and Scylla have been together for two seconds, how can they possibly be in love. Or how can the Unit be going through all this after only being on base for a couple of weeks. Now, I’m here for a good U-haul joke about the gays running away together after two weeks but below is my breakdown for why this assumption may be incorrect and that they have in fact been at Fort Salem for 11 weeks as of the Bellweather wedding.

Before I begin; a caveat. Yes they filmed the pilot in 2018. Yes they filmed the rest of season 1 in Spring 2019. While I’m sure they didn’t really pay that much attention to weather in the details, I’m going to provide my explanation at the end to account for unchanging weather that is likely a direct consequence of a limited window for filming as opposed to planned, historical canon.

Okay okay okay this has given me many thoughts and I will likely be writing about them later this week. I’m starting to wonder if the plague affecting Khalida is Mother Mycelium and not the Necro Mushroom.

We are definitely not done with this story yet but last night’s episode was more about the plague affecting Khalida and not the Necro Mushroom. For sure there is a pathway between Raelle and the Necro Mushroom and the fact that the plague is also fibrous and webbed makes it similarly resemble a fungus or a Mycelium network. It almost seems like the plague is death (Mother Death perhaps?) coming from the underworld to pull the living into the realm of the dead.

And then the way it crawls away from Khalida into the ground - Raelle is connected to the Otherworld/Underworld through the Necro Mushroom which likely is connected to all fungi at least on base if not the entire world.

Likely this fungus detached itself from Khalida and went into the mushrooms and fungi in the surrounding environment. And this is why Izadora finds it in the mushroom she is dissecting.

Why she is dissecting a mushroom though??? Regardless, Izadora immediately looks at the Necro Mushroom wall and is terrified that it seems to be infiltrated by a foreign fungus.

I think it is really important to bring up the notion of Balance here. Adil taught us this episode that use of magic has consequences. All of the work American military canon uses produces famines and plagues, etc. Unlike Raelle’s unconventional fixer techniques, canon fixers do not take on the illness or injuries that their patients have. Therefore they likely displace it into the world around them. All that displaced sickness could then forge together into this infiltrating fungus that is literally consuming witches to bring them to the Underworld. By unintentionally linking with the Necro Mushroom, Raelle has now allowed this fungal plague (again, this may possibly be “Mother Mycelium”) to displace into the Necro Mushroom Network. Raelle definitely knows something is wrong because she is left unaffected.

The seed has been planted for something HUGE - it very well could be that the Necro Mushroom is still some sort of portal that has now been corrupted by an imbalance. If it is connected to the Underworld or an Otherworld, it has displaced balance even further. What will the consequences be? I’m not even going to bother guessing tbh.

So I have been thinking alot about the mycelium wall and it's connection with Raelle. We see in episode 6 how the wall almost immediately responds when Raelle gets close to it. Mycelium builds superhighways of networks that can be harnessed by humans....imagine what a witch can harness. It can attain the energy from their surroundings like humans...or a witch in this case. Raelle has a special relationship with the lines between life & death as a fixer. We see also she uses her fixer powers differently than others, she speaks reciting bible verses which has proved very effective. And then we see the wall form an exact replica of Raelles face before fading away🤔 When healing Khalida Raelle expects to take on some of the disease like she has done with other healings, but for the first time it doesn't happen. The disease disappears, and we see ends up on the mycelium wall this proves the connection the wall and Raelle have now. We see in episode 7 during a linking exercise Raelle accidentally puts the whole class to sleep. How is it effecting her powers? Is it? What does this all mean though?........
