A League of Their Own (2022) is so fucking special because the queerness was not tokenized at all. So much care and time went into depicting how queer women can still be queer even if they're feminine or masculine or what race they are or what kind of background they come from. And from what the creative team has said so far, it also seems like a TON of research went into making sure that they told the stories of what queer people (and queer women more specifically) would have gone through at that time, both the good and the bad. It just makes me happy, to see this sort of show existing.

A nitpicky rant about Leighton’s characterization

*Spoilers for s1e5 of the Sex Lives of College Girls*

The fact that we didn’t get to see Leighton and Alicia hook up for the first time is downright criminal. They highlighted Leight’s bossy, cold nature in the first two episodes mid-hookup. While I guess the before and after is enough to show a difference, it lessens the effect of the difference. For that to truly be effective, we would have needed a scene of her post-hook up brushing a girl off with no plans to ever see her again (the blocking scene could count, but it doesn’t quite work for me). Otherwise we don’t actually get the satisfaction of pay off, to see if there’s been a change in demeanor because we’re being exposed to her demeanor in two different scenarios. 

I’m so curious if she still took as much control as she did in the first episode. Because maybe that’s just the way she likes things. Maybe Alicia fought her for it a little bit, made it less easy than her past hook ups. This really could’ve gone either way, a quick and passionate first hook up between horny teens who were very attracted to each other or an intimate first moment between two people who had a deep connection. The fact that I will never know frustrates me. 

Or the show could’ve done something really interesting with making this first time more animalistic and physical like her usual hook-ups, but after a couple of hook ups Alicia wants to slow her down. This is being very new to Leighton, would be a bit of an adjustment. It’s quite common for closeted kids to be somewhat romantically/sexually stunted and especially after just having sex with a guy, I feel like Leighton might have some issues. Her shift to enjoying the intimacy felt a bit rushed, but that’s what you get with four stories to tell and only ten (?) episodes to tell them in. One of the things I don’t love about streaming services is the shortened seasons, for this very reason.

Anyway if the show wasn’t called The Sex Lives of College Girls, I wouldn’t be picking it apart so thoroughly. But if that’s what we’re doing, I’m expecting them to commit and really tell a story with physical intimacy. And maybe I just need more scenes of Reneé Rapp kissing women because that first episode was a downright spirtual experience. I have so many thoughts buzzing around my little pea brain but regardless, I’ve loved the show so far and I’m really excited for the next few episodes and hopeful for a season two.

A few days without Scylla and Raelle is back to cutting up her shirts, skipping class, flying off base and knocking out an entire class cause someone pissed her off.

We’ve seen quite clearly that Raelle has had a huge impact on Scylla, but Scylla has an impact on Raelle too.  

This smug little asshole is right, Raelle has been improving in training since they’ve met. In many of the training scenes from episodes 2 to 4 Raelle is just silently in the background, following orders and every now and then offering sarcastic commentary. And I’d almost bet that this look 

is the reason Raelle is able to walk away from the Petra confrontation. Ulterior motive or not, Scylla gave Raelle a reason to not self-sabotage every chance she got because she gave Raelle a reason to want a better life for herself. If she was loved and had someone to love, she had a reason to try. Unfortunately, with that stability gone (and Taylor Hickson has confirmed this) Raelle is going back to a very worrisome powder keg who we’re not quite sure will be able to survive any more obstacles.

Head canon that Papa Collar was tearing up in the background of the phone scene after hearing Scylla say “I love you too”, knowing that Raelle had found love and after getting to know Scylla that Raelle had found love with such a passionate, smart, and dedicated person (... perhaps just like Willa??).
