Some said they didn't know their thermostats were being accessed from afar until it was almost 80 degrees inside their homes.
Without anyone touching it, they said their thermostat was changed while they were sleeping, making their home unbearably hot.
“Was my daughter at the point of overheating?” English said. “She’s 3 months old. They dehydrate very quickly.”
His wife received an alert on her phone soon after that. The family said their thermostat had been changed remotely, raising the temperature of their home during a three-hour “energy saving event.”
The family’s smart thermostat was installed a few years ago as part of a new home security package. Many smart thermostats can be enrolled in a program called “Smart Savers Texas.” It’s operated by a company called EnergyHub.
The agreement states that in exchange for an entry into sweepstakes, electric customers allow them to control their thermostats during periods of high energy demand. EnergyHub’s list of its clients include TXU Energy, CenterPoint and ERCOT.
Enjoy your “smart” phones and your “smart” thermostats and your cameras/baby monitors with microphones [for “security”] and your “smart” refrigerators/ovens/toasters, everybody… In my house, I occasionally watch television. In most people’s houses, the “smart” television watches them…. Not everything needs to be connected to the internet, y'all. In the meanwhile, disconnect your router and or modem from electricity at night when nobody is online. There isn’t much these things can do without being able to connect and receive orders [or be hacked].
Tbh I don’t love the idea of smart objects (especially not home security... that shit is... not hard to break) But this whole thing screams privilege. Like I am SO SO SUPPORTIVE of Texas requiring AC as a necessity, just like CO requires heat (aka, you cannot sell/rent a house where the heat does not work, and energy companies are legally not allowed to turn off your electric due to missed payments, because people could die.) but like, y’all ar freaking out about your house reaching almost 80 before you noticed? tell me you have never lived without AC, without telling me...
cause I have the unfortunate circumstance of living in a 2 story apartment with AC that does not currently work... It hasn’t been below 80′ in my home for like two weeks.
Not to mention, the people in this article LITERALLY SIGNED UP FOR THIS, and okayed it.
Interesting.
It’s got one of the most misleading names in medicine, for such a common condition.
to be completely honest, I hate how this is worded. it's neither "rare" nor "controversial". like, what the fuck is controversial about it? neurotypical's belief that it's actually symptom????
as for rare, nah fam. literally everyone I know who has ADHD hyperfocuses at points. the problem is y'all only see it as 'hyperfocusing' when it's on something productive and 'useful', and not when it's "oops I accidentally played the sims for 11 hours without eating, drinking water, or going to the bathroom."
It isn’t rare, it just is rare that we hyperfocus on what society has deemed acceptable to focus on.
