That was the date that started everything. The first-ever case of this virus occurred in Paris, France.
Everyone thought it would be just like COVID, from the moment it was announced across multiple news channels: everyone would be put in quarantine, schools and businesses would be closed for months, and everyone would be at home for a while… But that never ended up happening.
A video came out on TikTok of a police officer shooting an innocent person on the streets of LA. That occurred two days after the first case was brought to everyone’s attention.
The first person to get the illness in the United States was in Austin, Texas, on July 27th. The government made an effort to hide the virus's spread, but it just kept spreading around the globe like wildfire; That was what they had called the virus. Eventually, businesses, companies, stores, and schools were shutting down because everyone was getting sick… That happened on July 30th.
You remembered every fucking moment of how it had happened…. You were in your dorm room, changing into comfortable clothes after a long day of being in excruciating, boring classes you stupidly enrolled in for the semester. You had just thrown your dark blue sweatshirt over your head and comfortable pants when you heard your phone ringing from where you had tossed it onto the couch to get to your room. With a loud groan, you dragged yourself into the living room and picked up your phone to see two missed phone calls and four text messages from your older brother, Spencer. You don’t even jump when his photo pops up on your screen as he calls you again, and you swipe your thumb across to answer on the third ring.
“Oh my god, you finally answered,” Spencer spoke out in relief as you heard footsteps and shouting in the background. “Spence, what the hell is going on?” Your eyebrows drew together in confusion as you ran your fingers through your hair.
“Are you in your dorm?… Have you even taken a look outside?” Your heart sank slightly as you looked up at the closed, curtained window, then took quick steps towards it and drew the curtains back, your eyes widening in shock. “What the hell…” You murmured to yourself as you brought your phone to your chest, peeking at the scene you wished you hadn’t caught sight of. Your stomach swirled in nerves at the sight, swallowing the sensation of vomit from the view outside. There were the sounds of screaming and sobbing… People were yelling for help as some ran away from their families, friends…
People they knew… But they weren’t people. People don’t eat people….. Not unless you were a cannibal, but people were getting bitten… EATEN alive. You were extremely confused about what was happening. You were in classes all day. Your phone was dead, and you were so focused on school that you didn’t notice anything.
“Melanie and I are coming over to pick you up!…. We have other people with us that we saved along the way. Stay tight, pack your shit, and don’t do anything stupid. You understand?…” Spencer told you in a rush as you heard car doors slam shut. “Wait, Spencer. Can you please explain what the fuck is going on?!” You shouted through the phone as you drew the curtains closed. You couldn’t stand to look at those things biting into people…. Those innocent people. People you knew. Classmates, teachers.. A few of your friends. They were being killed in cold blood. “I don’t know, okay! E-Everything happened out of nowhere!… At one point, everything was f….. Fine, and the next people are getting attacked and eaten by dead people!….. Dead people, Faye! We ended up saving six of these guys as we escaped the airport. T… They’re with us now. We’re coming to grab you, and we’re getting the hell out of here!” Your brother’s voice slightly wavers as he stammers through the shock of what was happening. You could hear your brother’s fiancée as she was helping with navigation.
“Remember when Dad got you that butterfly knife set? Fetch that. Those things will definitely come in handy. Trust me. Grab that handgun from the safety he also set up for you.” His voice dropped slightly as you sprinted into your bedroom, threw on a pair of dark blue low-rise denim jeans, and went up to your closet to grab your dark pink duffel bag.
“What! Are you insane!…. You want me to kill peo-“You were cut off as your brother's voice screeched into your ear, causing you to grimace at the sound. “They’re not people! They’re dangerous, dead people! Go pack, now. We’ll be there in ten minutes!” He hung up.
Your phone slipped from your grasp from your ear… Shocked, scared…. You didn’t know what the fuck to believe. Forcing those feelings aside, you tossed your phone to the ground and started shoving stuff in your duffel bag. Clothes, toiletries, a flashlight… You sprinted to your hallway closet, opening the door roughly as you entered the safe's code, which your dad installed. Your breathing relaxed as it beeped, allowing you to open the safe door and grab the gun and a couple of rounds from the box. Shoving it all in your backpack, standing up to snatch the box of butterfly knives from the top shelf of the closet. Zipping the duffel bag up, you sprinted over to where your school backpack lay, picked it up, let your school supplies fall out of the already-opened backpack, and ran into the kitchen to grab non-perishable food, first aid, and anything else you wanted to grab before leaving your life behind.
The sound of a repetitive loud banging against your front door caused you to gasp slightly at the noise before you put on the first pair of shoes you could find, which were your slightly worn-out black Converse. You quickly grabbed your duffel bag and backpack, throwing them over your shoulder as you swung it open to be greeted by your older brother. Whose green eyes widened in anxiety, large amounts of sweat pouring down his face. Spencer wore a navy blue shirt, drenched in sweat, with a black jacket zipped halfway up, draped over his shoulders. He had dark blue denim jeans on, with a pair of dirty black Converse.
Without another thought, Spencer wrapped his hand around Faye’s arm and tugged her arm as he began dragging her down the hallway and down the stairs of the apartment building. He opened the door to the apartment, and you booked it to the parking lot. “There! Mel, unlock the doors!” Her brother shouted to his fiancée, prompting the woman in the passenger seat to unlock the car doors. As soon as the back door opened, Spencer shoved his sister into the car, and the door slammed shut. He immediately got into the driver’s side and slammed the door shut.
Faye had gotten into her seat as she tossed her backpack and duffel bag to the floor of the car. There was a bit of silence until one of the boys that Spencer had saved spoke up.
“You think we’re good for now?….” He asked in the silence of the car. Spencer looked up for a second to the rearview mirror, acknowledging the boy’s question before turning his attention back to the road as he returned to driving to escape hell. “For now, yes….. We’re going to try to get to the city….” He announced, his grip on the wheel tightening. His jaw tightened as he attempted to get over the shock of what had happened.
Faye shifted her body around slightly. Now, she notices the six boys that her brother has rescued. “Hey…. I’m Keeho… You’re Faye, right?” The brunette boy asked in a deep, yet smooth tone. “My name is actually Faith… But I like the name Faye more….” The girl spoke softly, to which the boy nodded before he gave he a soft smile. “Nice to meet you… I know we’re not in a better circumstance at all…..But what better time to do introductions than now?” He added, causing the girl to nod softly.
“The guy sitting in that seat next to you….. His name is Intak….” The boy motioned towards the guy sitting across from her. Faye looks over at the boy, noting that he has a puppy-like face…. The boy seemed to be around her age, possibly even a year older. “The guy sitting on my left, his name is Taeyang…. We call him Theo, though…” The girl shifted her attention away from the boy sitting across from her as her head turned over to the one behind her. He had a lean built… He had this alluring charisma that she didn’t know how to describe. He offered her a soft, warm smile, encouraging her to return it before looking back at Keeho to go on with the introductions. “That’s Jiung..” He nodded his head towards the boy on his right. The thing she caught sight of first about him was that he had this look of curiosity for a few seconds before his face brightened, letting her know that the girl was in safe hands.
“And those two are the youngest…. Their names are Soul and Jongseob.” Keeho gestured towards the two boys who sat on the car's floorboards, in the slightly large space between the girl's and Intak’s seats. It wasn’t hard to tell which was which….. Soul, who sat closer to Keeho, who was quietly observing the girl. Jongseob sat against the seat Intak sat on, fidgeting with his sleeves.
There was an ounce of silence before Spencer spoke up, as the clicking sound of the turn signal went off as he turned onto a road behind a few cars. “Did you get bitten or scratched?…” Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at her older brother in confusion. “……What?”
“Did you get bitten or scratched?….” He repeated his question, causing the girl to shake her head as confusion appeared on her face. “Good…… That’s good. You don’t want to be. Because, no matter what.. If you get bitten or even scratched, you’ll turn and become one of those things.” He spoke, sighing in relief as he switched the gearshift to neutral, as the cars in front of him were going gradually slow.
Faye’s body turned cold as she had the information sink in…… You get bitten, and you’ll turn…. Her stomach twisted at the feeling as she thought about the people she knew…. People she loved. Are they okay?…. “Mom and Dad……. Are they okay?….” Her voice cracked as she spoke.
The silence gave her the answer she didn’t want. She bit her lip to stop herself from crying as her lips trembled. She felt silent tears sliding down her cheeks, and she quickly wiped them away. The girl leans her head against the window, watching as more cars start rolling up to the interstate.
It has been over twelve hours since getting onto the interstate… They were in a traffic jam. It had gotten dark around two hours ago. A few people have gotten out of their vehicles to get some air, stretch out, talk with others, or hang around in their cars and wait to move.
Faye and the others have decided to get out of the car to stretch after being in it for a bit….. While that had happened as they stood next to the car, an older man, Henry, maybe in his sixties, walked up to the group and somehow got them to join him and two other women, named Eleanor and Sage, whom he’d saved during the escape as he was trying to drive off in his RV.
Henry had the group get their stuff from the car and abandon it as they reached the RV. Later in the night, more survivors joined the small, growing group held by Henry and Spencer. A grieving mother, her twelve-year-old son, along with the best friend of the boy’s father, Mallory, Noah, and Blake, had joined in, along with a scared mother, her shitty husband, and their twelve-year-old daughter, Caroline, Kieth, and Lily.
There was so much, yet so little, happening while staying on the interstate during the traffic jam, and not knowing what was happening or what would happen next. Henry had a small radio set on the bed of Blake’s truck, with the emergency broadcast channel on, but there was only static. “Damnit…..” Blake groaned in frustration as he slammed his hand against the side of his truck, as Faye watched Noah and Lilly play on the checkered board on the floor of the truck. “Can’t get a reading anymore?….” Faye quipped as Intak walked over to stand next to her to watch the kids. Watching as her brother, Keeho, Theo, and Jiung were helping with grabbing bags from the people’s cars, who had somehow managed to join the group.
“There’s nothing….Emergency system stopped….. The recording about that refugee center… Mallory..” Blake waved over at Noah’s mother, who had just walked over to check on her son. The woman walked up to him as they walked away slightly for a second. “Blake and I are gonna walk ahead, see what’s going on.. Faye, Intak. Will you please watch them?” Mallory asked, looking at the two.
“Yeah, go ahead. We’ll take care of them.” Faye nodded, watching as the two of them walked away. “Hey, they’ll be fine.” She spoke softly, trying to calm the kids down, especially the young boy, since his mom was wandering off. The two kids got back to their game, stopping every once in a while to watch helicopters or jets flying overhead. It had grown somewhat silent until loud explosions erupted toward the city….
They were bombing the city… eliminating people who were probably trying to escape from being killed by the dead.
“Oh, shit.” Faye gasped softly as she watched Lily and Noah scramble to Caroline in fear as they heard everything going on all at once. People started arguing, shots were fired…. The sounds of explosions were heard. Guttural moans from those things were heard nearby. She felt Intak wrap his arms around her as he felt her shaking in fear. Mallory and Blake eventually returned, and the group somehow managed to escape the horror.
September 17th, 2026……. Day fifty-six of the world going to shit…. That has been a thing written in Faye’s journal these days… What was used for notes with Geography that she took for college, was now used to write about how many days the world is going to be dead.
After somehow managing to escape the traffic jam on the interstate, they were now taking refuge at a quarry just outside of the city. The group had grown larger after the big traffic jam that night, and more survivors showed up in hopes of refuge from the scary world that had become of it.
Wanting to make sure that this ‘refugee camp’ was safe and in good hands, Blake, due to his knowledge of the police force before the world ended, became the leader. He and a few others had made up a bunch of rules and jobs for the group to make sure everyone was at a safe point. They had compiled a list of jobs on a whiteboard in Henry’s RV. Supply Runners; Faye, Intak, Keeho, Eleanor, along with five others who joined the quarry group during the traffic jam….. Andre, Bailey, Max, Lucas, and Nila… Caretakers/Educators for the kids: Mallory, Caroline, Sage, and Melanie. Mechanics: Aiden, along with three others who were highly knowledgeable in mechanics, would join a few days after being up at the quarry... Cameron, Ashton, and Lucas….
People in charge of meal planning and prepping: Soul, Jiung, Andre, and two others who had joined the group just three days ago….. Grace and Natalie. There is also, of course, an outlook, but anyone could do it. However, the small group who did it more frequently than anyone else in the group was Henry, Theo, Jongseob, Max, and Lucas.
Faye, Intak, Keeho, and a few other survivors had decided to go to the city to grab supplies for the group. At first, Spencer wasn’t keen on his little sister going on a run, but with much convincing…… And begging, Spencer finally allowed her to go, but with the extent of bringing her butterfly knives, and that Intak and Keeho would come along with the others that were joining, especially since Axel, who’s nothing but a creepy narcissistic asshole, was going to join in on the run.
Axel is one of the hunters and trackers in the group along with his little brother, Joel…. They joined the group when her brother, Spencer, and Blake were checking out the woods to see if there were any of those things out there. But there wasn’t… Instead, they found two rednecks alone in the woods and allowed them to join in one condition; that they hunted and tracked food for the group for their share.
At first, Spencer wasn’t okay with the idea because of how creepy, racist and jut an overall piece of shit Axel seemed to be, and with the fact that there were a bunch of women, but Blake somehow managed to convince him to have the Bowen brothers join. The small group of supply runners packed their own bags and left in an old, dirty SUV that used to be red but had become dirty over time after being left on a highway not far from here.
Faye and Intak had decided to go to a building with a higher vantage point to scope out the area for danger while the others searched for supplies in a nearby building. They were sitting on the high point of the building, on a platform that no walkers could reach. “You see anything?…” Faye asked as she sat down next to her supply-run partner, her almost-ripped-up backpack lying beside her.
“No….. Just the walkers…” Intak replied casually as he looked through the binoculars. A few walkers were roaming around, but it wasn’t until a horse neighing grabbed their attention, along with the dead, that Intak saw the walkers trying to grab an unknown man off the horse. “Oh shit…” He muttered as his eyes widened.
“Wait, what happened?….” Faye inquired as she took the binoculars from him and saw the unknown guy falling off the horse. “ Oh shit…” the girl repeated as she looked at the scene in front of her. She thought they got him until the man popped up at the top of the tank before slamming it shut as the walkers climbed up once they figured out where their next meal was, as the others chomped down on the poor horse.
“Oh god….. Intak, we gotta contact him. He’s not gonna survive on his own if he doesn’t get out.” She spoke nervously just as Intak grabbed the walkie from her backpack and the boy held down the button to speak.
“Hello?…… Hello?…… You alive in there?….” He asked, waiting for a response. There was no answer, causing the two to look at each other in somberness as they thought the man in the tank had died. “Hello?… Hello?… You there?…” A frantic voice crackled over the radio, causing Intak and Faye to look at each other and sigh in relief as they smiled before Intak answered the unknown man. “There you are…. Thought you wouldn’t answer.” Intak sighed as he released the button. “Where are you?…..” the unknown guy in the tank had asked. “Are you outside?…. You can see me, right now?….”
“Yep…. We can definitely see you.” The girl answered back, her index finger resting against the button on the walkie-talkie, trying to ignore the fluttering feeling in her stomach as her hand grasped Intak’s hand that was holding the walkie-talkie. “The thing is….. You’re actually surrounded. By a lot of them. That’s the bad news…” Intake informed, cringing at the critical moment the man was in…
Along with his choice of words, which caused the girl to slap his shoulder lightly. “Dude…” The girl murmured with a groan at his words.
“Is there good news?…..” The guy asked, causing the girl to sigh as she took the walkie from him and pressed the button to speak. “No… There’s not, but listen.. Just hear me out, alright?” She said softly, releasing the button so he could speak.
“Okay…. Tell me.” The girl could hear him calming down slightly, still on edge as walkers were banging against the tank he was stuck in. “Okay… The walkers are distracted by their food source, which is the horse, right?” She inquired. “Yeah…. They are…” The guy in the tank agreed with a slightly quieter tone. “Okay…. Well, you got a few of them climbing down. There’s one walker still on that tank, but the others had gone down to feed on the horse…. You with me so far?” Faye asked, hoping he was understanding the plan to get him out, as she released the button to let him talk.
“The right side of the tank is less crowded with those things. If you move now, then you have a free chance to get out of there,” Intak added as he pressed the button for him to talk to the unknown guy in the tank on the walkie before releasing the button.
Faye’s eyes widened as she had an idea pop into her head. “You got any ammo?” She asked. She released the button and waited for the guy to respond. “I… I got a Colt Python with at least one clip… 15 rounds.”
“Make those shots count…. They’ll come in handy.” Intak spoke into the walkie after the guy in the tank answered, trying to be nonchalant about the two of them basically holding hands. “The left side of the tank is less busy, so you need to jump out that way.. Keep going. There’s an alley up the street you need to run to. There’s a chained-up fence that’s all closed up, but it’s an easy fix to open it for you. Be there.” He added in. The two waited in an uncomfortable four seconds before the man’s voice crackled through the radio. “Hey, what are your names?”
The duo looks at each other in shock and disbelief at the man’s question, prompting the boy to answer. “Did you not pay attention when I said, ‘You have a free chance to get out?’ Get your ass out of there, and hurry! You’re running out of time!”
“Right.” The walkie clicked off, and the two could see the guy getting out and ramming the hatchet into the walker's jaw, causing its mouth to rip off as the walker fell back onto the street. “Come on!…. We gotta go!” Faye whispers as she grabs her backpack and starts climbing down the ladder, stepping back slightly as she waits for Intak to follow while also watching for walkers to come out of nowhere. The boy finally gets down, and he immediately starts running to the alleyway where he talked about meeting Faye, following with her gun out, ready to fire at any threat that comes their way.
“Whoa! Woah! Don’t shoot!” Intak cried out as he put his hands up to the guy in the tank aiming his gun towards Intak as he got Faye behind him.
“Come on!” Faye shouted as she noticed the walkers trying to bash their way through the fence. The three of them started running towards the way the two were first at. “Up the ladder, let’s go!” The girl shouted as she started climbing up the ladder, collapsing on the platform with a tired side before sitting up and watching the two men climb up.
There was silence until Intak spoke up as he noticed the uniform the guy was wearing. “Are you the sheriff? Came all this way to clean up the town or cause some problems?” He spoke sarcastically as he was referring to when the guy got every walker out.
Faye rolled her eyes in annoyance as she watched the walkers trying to reach for them. “Wasn’t exactly what I was going for..” The guy bit back, trying to get his breathing back to Normal as he leaned over the railing. “Yeah….. Well, you’re a dumbass in my book.” “Oh my god, just shoot me now….” Faye muttered under her breath as she looked around. Picking her backpack up, she threw it over her shoulder. “Michael…… Thanks. Both of you, really….” The guy, now introduced as Micheal introduced himself as he brought his hand out for the two to shake, which they did. “I’m Intak…… That’s Faye.” The girl nodded slightly as Andrew looked at the two who saved him.
Intak looked down to see the walkers now trying to climb up the ladder. “Uh oh….” He muttered before looking at Michael and Faye. “We should probably get going before they figure out how to climb.” He spoke before moving back slightly to let Faye go first. The girl smiled softly as she went over to the ladder and started climbing, keeping her eyes up to not psych herself out. Faye could hear the two men following her up the ladder. Her breathing calms down as she finally gets to the roof, fixing the hold on her backpack as she watches the two guys get onto the roof.
“Do you guys know who barricaded the alley?” Michael asked as we hopped from roof to roof. “The army, I guess…. We’re not exactly sure.” Faye answered as she tried to keep up with them. “Guess they thought the walkers wouldn’t be able to get through…. But that happened a long time before the world actually went to shit.” Faye added as they reached a building that had an escape hatch. “Hey, why did you guys help me out back there?… Could’ve left me to die, but you didn’t…. Why?” Michael asked as he stood next to Faye, watching as Intak pulled open the hatch, letting it secure as he threw his backpack down the hole, before the girl did the same with her backpack.
“I guess I’m just hoping that if me or Faye were in a heavy situation that one of us needed saving from, somebody could help out you know?….” He sighed softly as he glanced over at Faye, then Michael. The girl looked down, laughing softly as she went down the ladder…. Another freaking ladder, of course. Michael and Intak followed after, and as Andrew shut the trapdoor up above, it became dark as the three of them climbed down the seemingly long ladder.
As soon as they got to the bottom, Faye opened the door to let the three of them run out. “Intak, inform the others that we’re back, with a guest!” The girl exclaimed as she and the two guys ran to the exit of the building. The boy nods as he pulls the walkie from his belt, bringing it up to speak as he presses down on the button. “ Faye and I are back…” he spoke up, eyes widening as a few walkers stumbled across. “A guest and three of those things.” He added before releasing the button, placing the walkie back to its spot. Just as the three walkers were about to drag themselves over to the trio, two figures wearing bulky gear stormed out through the door and started beating the crap out of the walkers as they yelled for the three survivors to run into the building the group was staying in.
Just as they all rushed inside where the other survivors were being held in, Faye sees Eleanor holding Michael at gunpoint with anger in her eyes. “I’m gonna kill you, asshole!” She seethes through her teeth as the man looks at the woman with shock. Without hesitation, Intak grabbed onto Faye’s hand without her realizing and they walked into the corner where Keeho, and Bailey were as the four of them watched Eleanor rage at the new guy. “Eleanor, back off…” Andre sneered as he removed the bulky gear from himself, revealing a slightly muscular man with sweat beading down his forehead.
“We can’t go on, shoot’n people left and right. Relax.” A southern accent woman, named Nalia spoke up as she tried to get Eleanor to drop it. “Relax?….. You want me to relax?…… This stupid…. Ignorant asshole has gotten us trapped here.” The woman sneered as she gripped the gun in her hand, her jaw tightening as she spoke.
“Back. Off…..” The five slightly younger people stared at the man and woman arguing as Michael looked in between them looking mortified. You wanna pull the trigger?.. That’s fine. Them walkers will go on and get us much faster.” Andre added as he crossed his arms.
Eleanor finally gave up as she broke down, backing herself up as she brought the gun away from the man’s face. “We’re all dead…. All of us. Thanks to you.” She wept, causing the ex police officer to look at her with confusion as he was slowly standing up, fixing his posture while looking at the woman with slight fear. “I….. I don’t understand..”
“Take a look around… You fired all those shots. Now they’re all here trying to get inside.” Andre bit back as he glared dragging the poor man by his collar over to the front of the store where a few walkers were trying to get in as they slammed their hands against the windows. “We were here to grab some supplies and go. You know why?….. To survive. Getting by quick and quietly to grab what was needed. Not to shoot up and let all them find out we’re in their territory.” He adds onto his little rant. “Every one of those things heard the shots for miles.” Lucas states the obvious as he gestures over towards the front.
“You just made us become the appetizers…..” Eleanor says weakly as the group watches the walkers try to get into the store by slamming their hands against the glass door. “You get the picture now?” Andre added as he crossed his arms as he watched more of those things showing up, adding more danger and less of a chance to get out safely as the dead started trying to smash their bodies into the locked up double doors.
“Oh god… What the hell were you doing out there?” Eleanor asked as she walked towards the back, standing next to Faye with her arms folded. “Trying to fly the helicopter…..” Micheal muttered under his breath. Faye’s eyes widened a shock as she looked to the man she risked her life saving, turning her head to the side, she sees Intak with the same expression as they looked at each other before looking away. They really saved this guy?…
“Helicopter?…… A helicopter?….. You gotta be kidding me.” Andre groaned in frustration as he rubbed his head with his palm. “Tha’s gotta be a hallucination… You have gotta be imagine it…. That happens.” Nila pipped up, trying to get through to the new guy. There was no way in hell there would be a helicopter…. Not in this timeline.
“I saw it.” Micheal gritted through his teeth, trying to get the group to understand. “Hey, Lucas….. Can you try the CB?….. Try contacting the others again?….” Andre’s attention was towards the slightly older guy, who stood next to Keeho as he leaned against the counter. “….The others?…. They got a refuge center?” Micheal asked, in hopes that there was a safe chance the military got a group together. “Yeah….. Got a nice one. Everyone in the city is there.” Nila spoke sarcastically as she stood behind Faye, fixing her hair ponytail that had gotten lopsided as she ran through the city, trying not to get eaten.
“Shit isn’t workin’ piece of crap ain’t working in this area.” Lucas groaned in irritation as he tried to signal back to the camp. “The rooftop could some good-“ He was interrupted by the sound of gunfire coming from the roof. “You gotta be shitting me….” Faye mumbles as she and the others start running up the stairs to get the source of the noise. “What is this dumbass doing?…..” Andre groaned in disbelief as he grabbed his pack before running after the group.
