Allison smirked, leaning against the basin. “It’s a beautiful sight, really. Was going to ask if I could have some, actually.”

He gave her a small smile when she handed him the cake but he didn’t eat it instantly. Normally he would have just saved it for Teddy, but that wasn’t really an option anymore. “I think I’ll pass on the alcohol,” he said, giving her a slightly amused smile. Alcohol had never really been James’s thing and since he was about to have to go meet with his parents and Ministry Officials, now probably wasn’t the best time for that. “How do you punch a plant in the face? Do they even have faces? Unless it was a Mandrake and then they pretty much deserve to get punched.”

Allison shrugged, “All the more for me then.” She joked, but wasn’t actually joking at all - her tolerance for alcohol was becoming quite high, it was alarming. But she shrugged again and sighed. “Look, it was like, gonna attack me, yeah? And their loud screeching put me off, so I just... punched the Mandrake in the face. I know they don’t actually attack, but I swear this one was just gearing up for a fight.”

     “but he might as well be.” she countered softly, hiding the fact her cousin’s words still hurt– because allison was right. no matter how much neville and hannah embraced her as one of their own, no matter that they allowed her to hyphenate her last name those years ago– she wasn’t their daughter by blood. although the brunette knew blood did not define family. however as laurel watched the older girl, it was safe to say her brief expression of shock was unexpected as allison offered her a drink. but with a nod, laurel spoke. “yeah, thanks. i guess it won’t do any harm if i had one.” normally she didn’t drink, but the outside feeling of dread was infectious and well, rules were sometimes made to be bent. “but not too much, i wouldn’t wanna waste any in case i don’t like it as much.”

allison sighed loudly, clearly irritated. “except he’s not. so stop thinking it.” she was selfish and allison wasn’t ashamed to admit it. neville was her dad, despite all their faults, she still loved him. a thought had crossed her mind was that laurel was a replacement, and ali wouldn’t even blame them for that, because laurel was everything they wanted allison to be, but she was too sour and bitter for the world. wordlessly, allison produced two glasses from her bag and poured them a drink, sliding laurel her glass. “you’ll get used to drinking,” she murmured quietly. “that is, if you want to try new things. it’s okay to break the mold sometimes, you know. stop being so...” there wasn’t a word to describe what allison wanted to say. “... repetitive.”

He was almost relieved that it was Allison he’d run into. She’d never seemed like the type to try to coddle him and treat him like he was breakable if something bad happened. And sure enough, instead of giving condolences or asking if he was okay, she was offering him sweets and he couldn’t help but laugh. Though it was a tear-filled laugh at the thought of how much Teddy liked sweets and how much James had always hated him eating them. “I’d love some,” he said honestly.

Allison brightened at the sound of his laugh. When she was younger it was her favourite sound, maybe that was tied to her crush to him, but as she grew older it was always the sound of something good. And she so desperately wanted to be seen as a good person, even if she wasn’t as squeaky clean as Neville Longbottom’s daughter should be. Even though things weren’t so good now, Allison was glad to hear him laugh. It was a good laugh. But it didn’t hide the fact that her friend was now a widower. “Great,” she said brightly, handing it to him. “Cauldron cakes are the best. Also. My cousin swiped some alcohol, so you can have some if you wanted.” It was easy to fill the silence with words. “You wouldn’t guess what happened too, I punched a plant in the face. I bet dad would be so proud of me.” She rolled her eyes.

     "look, i know you don’t… really like me a lot or whatever, but what i do know is that you like alcohol and cauldron cakes.” laurel huffed as she placed said items in front of her cousin, as if they were the symbols of a weird peace offering. “as long as you don’t tell dad about the drinking on school grounds, i won’t either.” she already stole the alcohol from an older student, something she’d never do otherwise ( she wasn’t sure who, but they were already too out of their mind to notice it missing, and with current circumstances, she bet liquor – alongside potions – was at a all-time high ). “i just figured that maybe we both could use some company who’s not bawling their eyes out…”

allison didn’t know why laurel irritated her so damn much. weren’t family members supposed to love each other unconditionally? she was sure the potter-weasley clan were one giant family-love fest; and she was on the outside looking in. as always. allison supposed it was because laurel fit in better than she ever did, that neville and hannah had basically adopted her without a second thought, that maybe laurel was the daughter her parents wished they had gotten instead of allison. it didn’t help that laurel was exceptionally great at herbology, while allison swears up and down that a plant died when she just looked at it. a brief smile slipped across her lips as laurel gave her the alcohol and cauldron cakes, but that quickly died down. “He’s not your dad.” allison reminded her, not harshly but not friendly either. “but I won’t tell him, I promise. I don’t snitch on people.” grabbing a cauldron cake, allison broke some off and placed it in her mouth. “Want a drink?”

James felt numb. He’d been in the Headmaster’s office since late into the night and he just felt….he felt nothing. His father and Mother had showed up to support him and now he had to go to the Ministry to ID the body and fill out the proper paperwork as Teddy’s husband. He was on his way to collect a few things from his room before leaving when he accidentally bumped into someone. “Sorry. I…sorry. Didn’t see you,” he mumbled quietly.

Allison was a mess but if there was one thing she was good at, it was hiding it. Fake it till you make it, right? The cracks were starting to show now, especially in light of Teddy’s death. Truthfully she wasn’t close to him, Teddy didn’t know her secrets and vice versa, but her friends knew him. James was her friend, but Allison didn’t know how to be there for him. “Oh      no, that’s fine. Honestly.” Allison murmured quietly, pulling out a crumbling cauldron cake from her pocket. “Cake?”

Molly was a mess of limbs on the floor of the Hufflepuff common room. She held a picture of Teddy in her hand and choked out loud, uncontrollable sobs. “Fuck off. FUCK OFF.” She screamed pushing and kicking at anyone who tried to touch her. This wasn’t right—- it wasn’t okay. Teddy Lupin didn’t deserve any of this bullshit. Molly’s voice went raspy as her nails dug into the carpet. “Please leave me alone.” she whined.

Allison scrambled away, too numb to do anything about it. Trying to console Molly had backfired and now the two were a mess of tearful limbs and Allison seemed too broken to move. “I can’t       I’m not going to leave you alone, I won’t. Because people need you, James needs you. He needs his family more than anything, even if he doesn’t know it.”
