In 5x13, Stiles watches as Kira kisses Scott and says “You came back for me.” When he nods, she says “I love you so much.” 

In 5x16, three episodes later, Lydia says it to Stiles. “You came back.” And she doesn’t say I love you. She doesn’t kiss him. But she shuts up and she lets him do what he came to do– she lets him save her life. And when she smiles at him, with his hand resting on her cheek and the other one shaking with fear and anxiety and adrenaline, it is just as intimate as a kiss; just as obvious, to Lydia, as saying I love you. 

Sometimes I wonder if Stiles would stare at the framed drawing of the nemeton that he keeps in his bedside table and that moment between Scott and Kira would pop into his head and he would wonder if he was reading into things, or if Lydia’s smile had been the unspoken whisper of “i love you” that seemed to be so easy for everybody but the two of them.
