Fascism is a virus and ignoring it won't make it go away

I've seen people (read: cis white men) suggest that the media disproportionately covered the Virginia Nazi rally. After all, there were "only" a few hundred white supremacists there. The very next day, counter-protests took place in hundreds of cities all across the country. Doesn't that mean, therefore, that the threat of fascism has been overblown?

To call this line of reasoning dangerous is an understatement. Nazis killed Heather Heyer and badly beat Deandre Harris. If the demand that the oppressed simply ignore their oppressor sounds familiar it's because that's what white men demand victims do literally whenever they're being harassed, whether we're talking about Gamergate or a few hundred Nazis marching in Virginia. Put simply: ignoring harassment doesn't work. If engaging harassers is messy, ignoring the harassment and allowing it to spread is assured destruction.

Fox may launch a bid with Blackstone for Tribune Media. What's Blackstone? They want to steal Social Security...

The Blackstone Group is the largest alternative investment firm in the world, specializing in private equity, credit and hedge fund investment strategies. The founder of the firm is named Pete Peterson, a guy who has a serious boner for privatizing Social Security.

I started reporting on Peterson's antics back in — ohgodohgod— 2010 because at the time he was making the media rounds, strongly advocating that Social Security get the same treatment as public pension plans (y'know, because those private 401k plans worked out so well, and weren't at all tanked by a plummeting stock market).

Right now, the black bloc protesters from the D.C. protest are facing a decade in jail and a fine (each) of $25,000. No one was hurt during their protest, but Starbucks and McDonald's had to replace some windows and a limousine, a symbol of America's wealth disparity, burned. And meanwhile, liberals are gleefully making memes of a black bloc protester engaging in the great American pastime of punching Nazis. Lots of people secretly really like the black bloc. If you doubt that, just Google 'Richard Spencer gets punched in the face' to see just how fond people are of the black bloc's direct action approach to stopping Nazis in their tracks. And that's what we need to do right now.  Many progressives have been raised to tolerate outlandish ideologies in the spirit of inclusivity, but the far-right is now exploiting the sanctity of safe spaces in order to advance fascism, which will destroy our democracy. You don't hug and coddle Nazis. It doesn't work. Fascists only understand aggressive defeat. Radical protest creates the space for actions like the Women's March. By pushing the Overton Window left, the black bloc makes the Women's March look like a hyper-reasonable movement. 'We'd better deal with these nice white ladies,' some in power might say, 'They're nothing like those crazy kids dressed in black.' I promise you: the Nazis don't fear peaceful liberal protests, but they may think twice about marching in public if the black bloc is there to meet them.

I think Steve Bannon is held up in a dark room somewhere, stroking a Persian cat, hoping the Democrats will spend the next four years screaming that Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million people and that Trump is a puppet of Putin. Because that means Democrats aren't effectively organizing on other fronts. They'll be hypnotized watching the circus, outrage-tweeting one Trump faux pas after the other like during the eight years of Dubya. I don't want to be one of those people who claims your very passionate (and valid) cause du jour is somehow "unworthy" or a "distraction" because, listen, subverting democracy is a BFD. But people are going to die if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. Poor people will lose access to cancer screenings if Planned Parenthoods are shuttered. Individuals are currently scrambling to get IUDs because access to affordable birth control is no longer a sure thing. Millions of immigrants are living in fear because they're wondering if they will be torn away from their families.

one bad idea; one good

I wrote about how the DNC's "new" approach to "drive negative media coverage" of Trump is actually insane since they tried that the first time around and it didn't work. I also imagined what that meeting must have looked like:

INT. DNC Meeting

Rahm Emanuel: Thank you all for coming here today. I decided to take some time off from being the pathologically evil mayor of Chicago to further ruin the Democratic Party.

Hillary Clinton: And we so appreciate it, Rahm. For my part, I'm willing to do literally whatever is needed so that I don't fully absorb the blame for running a terrible campaign.

Barack Obama: It's not your fault. Hil. You're just not me.

Hillary: *the laugh of desperation* Don't I know it, Barry? It was like everyone was just projecting their hopes and dreams onto me instead of actually acknowledging me for the establishment, triangulation machine that I am.

Barack: I hear that. When did I ever present as anything other than a lukewarm, moderate Democrat? And people thought I was a radical Socialist! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Bill Clinton: Ladies and gentlemen, let's stay focused: how do we really get back to the roots of the DNC, and continue the proud tradition that I helped found of slowly selling out the Democrats until they're indistinguishable from Republicans?

Howard Dean: *in outdoor voice* Can we blame the Russians?

Rahm: We have been. A lot.

Sorry, Denialists. Bigotry Did Elect Donald Trump.

I wrote a response to a very bad NYT op-ed that claimed liberals are wrong to say racism and bigotry helped Trump get elected. The point is: racism is *always* a factor in U.S. politics.

Racism is always with us because it's the foundation of the United States. White people used to own black people in this country, and that original sin had a monstrous ripple effect that spread outwards into institutional racism and segregation and voter disenfranchisement and Jim Crow and red-lining and subprime mortgages and the prison-industrial complex and police brutality and on and on.

So of course race and racism played huge roles in the election of Donald Trump. If anyone rolls their eyes at that simple reality, they are very likely a white person who doesn't experience racism in their everyday life. To them, liberals just won't let go of the race card thing, which is really too bad because racism is a fad of yesteryears, and it's simply liberals and their refusal to stop living in the past that is stopping us all from living in a racially harmonious utopia
