ALLISON ROSE SLOAN - 19 "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" Alli Sloan. Nineteen. I've just finished my freshman year of college, hoping to one day be an amazing Neuro surgeon like my uncle Derek. Younger than Josh by 6 years, older than Shawna by 4 minutes. Savannah let out a sigh of relief when she saw her sister throw the cotton ball in the trash. Though a confused expression fell over her face seconds later when Alli mentioned having a secret. “Okay,” Savannah nodded. “What is it?” she asked curiously.

 Alli pressed her hands against her knees as she tried to think of the best way to tell her sister. “You know Brigham Carney? The doctor Uncle Derek works with sometimes? I’m...we’re together. And I’m just, terrified. Because he’s like 7 years older than me. But I love him, Sav. Like, actual real ‘Taylor Swift song’ love.“ She sighed softly before pushing her hair back a bit. “But mom and dad and Uncle Derek would kill me... Maybe not momma but I’m pretty sure about the other two.”

“I can’t stop now, I’m in too deep. You wouldn’t happen to be, like, a pro at knitting by any chance, would you?”

“All I know is how to knit and pearl. Anything else, I’m completely lost with.”

Savannah nodded a bit, trying not to move her head too much so that the cotton ball didn’t move around any more than it needed to. Savannah did remember that fight. She was pretty young when it happened, probably only twelve or thirteen, but she remembered. Her dad’s reaction was part of the reason she was so nervous about him finding out about her nose. “Well, you might not have been perfect back then, but you grew up to be. I doubt we’ll be able to say the same for me,” Savannah pointed out, gripping her sister’s hand a little tighter. “Are we almost done? Please, please say yes.”

Allison’s heart dropped a bit when her sister said she was perfect. After a few moments, she took the cotton ball away, tossing it into the trash as well as the gloves. She cleaned the area up, taking a bit of neosporin and smearing a little onto her sister’s nose. After that, she pulled up a seat, sitting in front of her sister and waiting a moment before speaking.”I’m not perfect. And to tell you, I’m gonna tell you a secret. And you cannot tell mom or dad cause they will...they’re not ready yet.”

“Alright, I’ll keep that in mind,” she smiled. Savannah took a deep breath before nodding. “Yeah… I figured. But I mean, it can’t hurt any more than the actual piercing did, right? So I’m sure it won’t be too…” Savannah stopped mid sentence immediately once Alli pressed the cotton ball to her nose. “Oh, shit,” she muttered under her breath, scrunching her nose up as she squeezed her sister’s hand as hard as she could. “Yeah, no, I don’t like this. I think I’d rather just live with the infection, honestly. Let’s be done with this.”

She let Savannah hold her hand as hard as she wanted, feeling absolutely horrible at the pain she knew she was causing her sister. “You know, I wasn’t perfect when I was your age. Remember that big argument I had with dad? Well, I let my friend Carmen pierce my lip. It was a lot less worse than this, mostly cause dad made me take it out.” She was trying to distract her sister from the pain, knowing that maybe talking would help the girl a little bit.

Brigham’s eyes shut for a moment in contented defeat. “You’re a cute pack mule,” he mumbled loud enough for her to hear when he sat back on the bed to regain a bit of stability. He watched Allison disappear into the hallway, unsurprised by the wheelchair she presented. Brigham eyed it with a sort of cold hostility, hating the idea of being so dependent and abased, but his expression warmed when he looked at Alli again. He nodded, understandingly, before he stood up just to sit again in the wheelchair in front of her. “Can we at least race the other wheelchair-bound patients to the parking lot?” Brigham deadpanned when he shot Allison a playful smirk. With his hands resting on the chair’s sides, he remembered the last time she had wheeled him around, the shooting presenting itself for Brigham in fragmented, horrifying clips. He shudder, softly. “Let’s get out of here… I can’t wait to spend the day with you,” Brigham told her truthfully, resting his hands on his knees.

Allison did a Vanna White gesture to herself. “Pack mule and eye candy all in one neat package. All for you.” She stuck her tongue out at him. She pushed him along the hall,  feeling the deja vu set in and her arms shook slightly as she tried to keep herself in control. If she were feeling this way, she couldn’t imagine how Brigs was. “I can’t wait to spend the day with you either...” She entered the elevator quickly, pressing the button before moving beside him, pressing her hand to the side of his face and kissing him gently. “I hear the elevators here are magical...” she smiled softly at the man, pressing her forehead to his for a moment before pulling away as the doors opened and she wheeled him out to the car. “Alrighty, sir. You need help getting into the car or can you do it by yourself?”

Savannah winced a bit as her sister slid the piercing out of her nose. “Yeah… I know,” she mumbled, looking away from her sister. Savannah knew that what she’d done was stupid, and she felt bad about it. Especially since Allison had gotten stuck cleaning up her mess. “I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t let him do my bellybutton too, huh?” she joked, attempting to make light of the situation.

Allison felt horrible about hurting her sister but she knew that she had to do this unless she wanted things to get worse. “Sav. Next time you wanna put a new hole in your body, just call me. I’ll forge dad’s signature and we’ll go and have a professional do it.” Alli soaked the cotton ball in the solution, before holding it up and sending a look of sympathy to the other blonde. “This is gonna sting like a bitch.” She pressed the ball gently to her sister’s nose, holding her sisters hand with her ungloved hand.

“I think your mom’s memory is something we all wish we had.” Jo said with a small smile. “I’m on my break so I have some time, what are we studying exactly?”

“It would be pretty perfect. Thankfully, I think I got her work ethic and talent.” She took a sigh if relief and pulled out her textbook. “Well, um, Brigs is helping me with the Chemistry course I’m taking. But the physics I need some help with.”

Savannah let out a deep sigh of relief, then nodded at her sister. “Okay, good. That’s good. Cleaning this thing out’s gonna hurt though, isn’t it?” she asked, though she was pretty sure she already knew the answer to that question.

Allison pulled out the salt water solution, as well as some cotton balls, looking at her sister with a sad look on her face. “It’s gonna sting. But definitely not as bad as if you just left it.” She poured some of the solution in a cup and left the bottle to the side with the cotton balls. Allison put on some gloves before gently maneuvering the piercing out of her sisters nose and dropped it in the solution. “It could have been a lot worse, you know.”

“I want to create a music studio where less fortunate kids can get lessons for cheaper.”

“Well, you’re right about A,” Savannah admitted, sitting down so that her sister could take her vitals. “And as for B… I don’t know. I didn’t really ask if he did or not. I just assumed that he would.”

Alli nodded, moving to take her sister’s temperature and blood pressure. Once she saw that they were both normal, she breathed a sigh or relief. Her first thought had been the worst case scenario, TSS, but she was so glad it wasn’t that. “Okay. So good news, nothing too bad. I should only have to clean it and leave the piercing out til it heals.”

“Well you have two options. A, go back in time and figure out how to inherit your mom’s photographic memory or B do it the hard way and make coloured flash cards and then highlight your book correspondingly.” Jo chuckled softly, wishing some how she could have got her hands on a photographic memory. She looked over the girl her best friend had fallen completely in love with and she couldn’t help but smile she was so overjoyed for the both of them. “I could help you make some if you’d like”

Allison laughed softly at the woman’s joke and shook her head. “I kinda wish I could do that. Go back in time and get my mother’s photographic memory.” She pushed her hair back, twisting it on top of her head in a messy bun, sighing softly. Her eyes widened at Jo when she offered to help. “Would you? I mean, if you’re not busy saving lives or anything.”

      It was only after her ungracious flop next to her daughter that Lexie realized her daughter was heavily preoccupied with another matter. ❛❛ Oh no, I was only kidding sweetie. Though I’m glad you’re so willing to help your mother with unethcical and illegal practice. ❜❜ It was good information to hold on your children; told you which one to look out for.

Allison looked over at her stuff and shook her head, not wanting to think about it. Ever since the shooting, Alli had more anxiety about school than ever before. There were times when she would hide out in an on call room to pretend school didn’t exist. “It’s not going anywhere. I can’t concentrate.”

“My vitals? Why do we have to take my vitals? There’s no way this can be that serious,” Savannah assured herself, starting to descend even further into panic mode. But as her sister promised to get her fixed up, she took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself down. “I… okay. Thanks Alli.”

Allison inwardly cursed herself for seemingly driving her sister to panic even more. “Just a precaution. It’s okay, Sav. It’ll be fine.” She led her little sister to a room, pulling the blinds so none of the nurses or doctors started to gossip and it got to their parents. “So I’m guessing that a) you didn’t get this done professionally and b) that whoever did this didn’t sterilize the needle.”

     Surgery was great, it was usually the highlight of the work day. Paperwork that came with it however? Around as fun as sticking sharp needles into skin. ❛❛ I’m offering you twenty dollars to help with this. You can forge signatures right? I feel like you’d be good at forging my signature. ❜❜ A twenty is pulled from her pocket as she sits down opposite, papers flopping haphazardly onto table.

Allison had her textbook out, trying to finish her essay so that she didn’t have that anxiety on her shoulders anymore. But when her mother sat down across from her she closed her laptop and textbook, pushing them off to the side and grabbing a pen. “Absolutely. If I get to spend time with you. of course.”

“…under and over… OW! Stupid pointy motherfu –” Sofia cut herself off, looking up at the person before her. “Does it at least resemble a scarf?”

“Um....totally?” Allison gave the women a smile before looking at the scarf. “Maybe you should stop. You might injure yourself.”
