Bobuck Plays the Residents - Charles Bobuck (2017)

Longtime Resident Chuck Bobuck (recently retired) reimagines several classic Residents songs in his own ever-evolving style. One of the best parts of this album is his voice - he’s not a singer, and his vocals have a weak, insecure quality that’s absolutely mesmerizing. I’d recommend this for any serious Residents fan.

Anonymous - Tomahawk (2007)

Mike Patton and friends lend their signature metal weirdness to this album of traditional Native American music (from a book of transcribed songs published in 1900). This basically sounds like - well, exactly what you’d think it sounds like. Completely unique, really good stuff.

My bartender, a couple of weeks ago: If Action Bronson wasn’t as big as he is, I bet he’d overdose on weed. (to woman next to me) He’s the guy who does Ancient Aliens.

Blazing Arrow - Blackalicious (2002)

This is some prime avant-garde/underground/progressive hip hop. Millennial apocalyptic imagery, irregular tempos, complex rhymes. Zach De La Rocha? Not so alt with that last one but it sure places this album in a certain time period. I was a little wistful that Blackalicious seemed to have faded away, but I just checked and they released a new album in 2015. Hooray!

DAMN. - Kendrick Lamar (2017)

DAMN. is great! It’s a little unfortunate that it’s merely great, as opposed to phenomenal - it doesn’t pull you inside out and expand your mind like good kid-m.A.A.d. city and To Pimp a Butterfly - it’s just a great album with great tracks that’s fun to listen to. He somehow even made a U2 appearance work! On a lesser artist’s album, it would have just been tedious.

Humanz - Gorillaz (2017)

I Miss Fun Gorillaz

Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but there’s something about this album that feels darker than their previous works - not quite darker in subject matter, but darker like you’re at a party with no lights on and you don’t know anybody and maybe you’ve had a little too much too drink and a little too little to eat. Which is not to say that I dislike it, it just feels separated from the rest of the Gorillaz discography in a way I can’t articulate.

Graduation - Kanye West (2007)

I Miss Fun Kanye

no really I am seriously concerned for him and his mental health, the guy sets off my Depression Radar more than almost any other celebrity I don’t know at all (Hugh Laurie’s at the top of the list)

Anyway, finally picked up this album after years of mumbling “parallel double park that motherfucker sideways” apropos of nothing over and over again. Guess what: it’s good. This wildly acclaimed album is good!

The Bob’s Burgers Music Album (2017)

I am completely in awe of 1) how this show has continuously pumped out great music every week (there are 106 tracks on this CD!) and 2) how consistently funny all of it is. And this doesn’t even include the most recent season, which among other pieces, had a full prog rock album. A+ great stuff!

Before They Were The Residents, They Were... - The Delta Nudes / The Residents (2016)

The catalog listing for this Pre-Residents collection of music warned that the sound quality isn’t great, but honestly it sounds fine (certainly better than the tracks on it that I’d gleaned from the internet in years past - paying for music really works!)

Good mix of barely-competent banging on instruments and Snakefinger’s glorious guitar work. This is a must-have for any hardcore Residents fan.

The Ghost of Hope - The Residents (2017)

Oh dear, I just... don’t *like* this. It seemed so promising - basis in weird history, production by Eric Drew Feldman (who I’ve enjoyed in other contexts). But it’s just repetitive and boring. And they’ve used some kind of pitch correction on the vocals, which I absolutely hate. I love The Residents, but I guess they can’t all be winners.

Gurdy Hurding - Renaldo and the Loaf (2016)

The combination of the driving rhythm of the hurdy gurdy with Renaldo and the Loaf’s general weirdness sounds like the music that might emanate from one of the Quay Brothers’ handbuilt sets for their bizarre stop motion animations. Good stuff!

Also, the Allmusic link has the track listing for a Tabor Radasti album, in fact, the same album that Walter Robotka randomly sent me with the order that included Gurdy Hurding. I’ve gotta email that guy.

The Man Who Fell to Earth - Soundtrack (2016)

My birthday present to myself. I already have all the Stomu Yamashta off of this, but not the John Phillips, and the record is nice and pretty and another weapon in my arsenal to drive people out of my house. Unfortunately, the soundtrack doesn’t include the Phillip Glassy “what is this music Farnsworth keeps sending me, I don’t like it” song. COME ON, WHAT AM I PAYING FOR, PEOPLE

You’re Dead! - Flying Lotus (2014)

Birthday present from my partner, who knows exactly what I like: weird experimental music featuring some of my favorite musicians. This one’s got guest appearances by Kamasi Washington, Kendrick Lamar, Herbie Hancock, and, of course, Snoop Dogg, who I’m pretty sure would be on my album if I asked him.

The record version is gloriously illustrated by a guro mangaka, and it’s unclear what order the tracks are supposed to be in. It’s just a jumble of weird beautiful psychedelic hip hop, and my only complaint is that I didn’t get an mp3 download code like one tends to get in records nowadays.

Pin Ups - David Bowie (1973)

One of the few David Bowie albums I didn’t own until recently. It’s all covers of hit British songs from the 60s, none of which I’d ever heard before, so I can’t say what he’s done to distinguish them. I can say that this record has an extraordinary amount of energy; it sounds like he just got super hyped up over music he likes and recorded the entire thing in one straight-through session.

Also, hey! There’s Twiggy! I miss the glory days of America’s Next Top Model.
