i feel like people who are like 'bruce is wild cuz surely other kids in gotham saw their parents get murdered, he's not special' are missing the point cuz, like. Yeah. gotham is a place where crime and violence are rampant. almost certainly other children saw their parents murder, perhaps even more viscerally than bruce did. but. thats the Point.
arguably one of the longest-running themes in batman is an interplay between power and just... the desire to help other people. bruce might not be 'special' because he saw his parents die, but he's 'special' because he saw his parents die, felt (and often feels) powerless, and yet had the ability to do something about it. and yeah, he often fails but he also... doesnt, a lot. gotham may never be rid of violence (for canon and meta reasons) but, arguably, batman isn't about Results, it's about wanting to help, finding the power to try, and giving it your all even when it seems bleak and impossible. 'batman' may (often) be a male power fantasy, but i think its also... a victim's power fantasy. the fantasy of being able to say 'i was hurt, im still hurting, but im going to stop other people from getting hurt'
like thats the Point. thats Why he does what he does, in as many ways as he does it. idk why people think that that makes bruce or gotham less interesting

ouija board - jegulus - jegulus raising harry - marauders spooktober - @deadkaywizard - word count: 386
When James walked through the front door of his home, he didnāt have any particular expectations. He thought, maybe, heād see his ten-year-old son, Harry, and his best friend, Ron, curled up in the sitting room, watching a Muggle movie. He figured, perhaps, heād see his husband, Regulus, cooking dinner or reading a book. If he was really imaginative, he figured all three of them could be outside practicing Quidditch, even though that was unlikely because it was dark and lately, the boys seemed more interested in causing trouble than being outside.
He did not, however, expect to see Regulus, wand out, peering down the basement stairs and cackling madly, as screams sounded from below.
āLove,ā James said slowly, setting his bag on the counter and walking toward Regulus. āWhat are you doing?ā
Regulus turned abruptly, eyes wide. āErā¦nothing!ā
āIs nothing going to get us an owl from Molly again?ā he asked, though he personally felt that Molly was a bit of a Debbie Downer sometimes.
Regulus rolled his eyes. āIt shouldnāt,ā he drawled. āTheyāre the ones who insisted on playing with Pandoraās Ouija Board.ā
James blinked. āHarry and Ron wanted to play with that old thing? Itās not even real magic.ā
The shorter man shrugged. āYeah, Dora was here earlier and explained to them what it was. Both of them started going on about how it was fake Muggle garbage, but Harry decided they should go into the basement and try it. You know, ātis the season, or what have you.ā
A grin stretched across Jamesās face. āAnd like a good parent, you left them to it?ā
Regulus shrugged. āYouāre obviously a bad influence, because I decided to take the opportunity I was given,ā he replied with a small smirk.
He laughed, eyes widening in mock defense. āYouāre blaming me?ā
āOf course I am,ā Regulus replied, crossing his arms and grinning. āAs if you arenāt going to go do the same thing!ā
āNah, of course I am. But the fact that you blame me!ā James gasped and pressed a hand to his chest like he was offended, but then walked over to the stairs and waved his wand, making the lights flicker like Regulus had been doing before.
The boys below started screaming again.
āI love being a parent,ā James whispered gleefully, beaming at Regulus.
