Omer Eltigani’s new project is an ambitious one. He’s writing a Sudanese cookbook. The space of knowledge about Sudanese recipes and ingredients has for a long time been a woman’s domain restricted to the privacy of the home and passed down generations orally. The Sudanese Kitchen, Omer’s cookbook-in-the-making, aims not only to provide a physical record of this intimate information but to explore the historical and socio-economic aspects of Sudanese kitchen politics. “The more I worked on it, the more the project became about the link between cuisine and culture and the way they are shaped by the social and political climate.” I recently interviewed Omer to find out more about The Sudanese Kitchen and his thoughts on cooking in diaspora.

Next year will be significant for Sudan and South Sudan. Darfur will mark the centenary of its incorporation into Sudan, while the South prepares to celebrate its fifth birthday. The Guardian Africa network would like to use this as an opportunity to take a closer look at the two countries, and to work with young journalists from the region who want to gain experience with an international media organisation. From politics, human rights, the issues facing conflict regions such as Darfur or the Nuba Mountains, to features on art, music or film and stories about gender and women’s rights, we’d like to hear ideas that explore life for Sudanese and South Sudanese people today. Application guidelines Journalists wishing to take part must: –Be based in Sudan or South Sudan –Be able to attend a workshop in Cairo in early March (dates to be finalised) The deadline for applications is 29 December 2015.
My Sudanese and South Sudanese people, check out this great opportunity!
