general info
this story was sparked this past summer when I was recovering from a really bad period for my mental health and finally felt like I was able to write again. I wrote this whole little universe as something very fluffy and comforting, since that was what I needed at the time (and frankly, still need now lmao)
when I started, I had no idea this piece would expand into a whole interconnected web of works, but it's just been so lovely to live in this fictional space and it's given me a place to retreat to when I need it
funnily enough, all of this was started by me hanging some sheets on the line to dry this summer and thinking "wow, wouldn't it be nice to do this for armitage?" (y'know, because I have exceedingly Normal thoughts 😅) and then I started writing this fic later that day
the title comes from the taylor swift song of the same name (although if you're not a taylor fan, no worries, I mostly name my fics after songs because I'm not very good at coming up with titles 😅). I actually didn't write it with the song in mind, but when I was listening to it later, I was like "yes, these are excellent vibes for this story," so that's what I went with
anyway, I hope y'all enjoy this very self-indulgent fluffiness! ☺️

I am giving you my whole life ok? I got nothing larger to give, I'm not giving it to anybody else. If you're looking for permission to disqualify me, I'm not gonna give it to you. Ok? I love you. And I'm not in conflict about it. Okay? But if what you want is like a laundry list of all the things that piss me off, I can give it to you.
Pixel post dividers for everyone! It's not much, but feel free to use them if you'd like.
I don't know the ideal size for these, so let me know if they're too tall. I can make them a bit shorter next time.
cat tapestry, 100x100 stitches, 26in~ x 23in in all
notes + thoughts under the cut :)
design/materials
chart found off of Pintrest
green lines are every 10 stitches
original chart (left) and my 'edited' one (right),
my edited version cleaned up the gradients between colors to be a solid color so the chart/tapestry looked cleaner
redid the eyes/ears charts so everything was as symmetrical as I could get it to be
loops and thread acrylic yarn for everything (from micheals)
4.5mm hook (was originally going to do it with a 3.5 SO glad I didn't)
the process
not too shabby overall, I think the quickest part was at the end (top) where it was just all black and white so there weren't as many color changes that I had to go through, and I could just speed though it
chose this chart because of the low color color changes/I liked how big the color blocks looked, it didn't look too intimidating of a piece for it being my first large tapestry
the eyes in the blue and yellow cat however, were ATROCIOUS I'll talk about what I would do differently later on but those were the worst part for sure, I did them in such an inefficient way >:(
^ another minor worst part was the questionable increases and decreases I did throughout because I didn't use stitch markers, so I would end up skipping a few stitches here and there (should have used the markers, but they were annoying me after trying to use them in the first few rows and I was fine with keeping a mental count, and tbh I don't think I did more than a handful of the inc/dec at the end of it all)
didn't float my yarn across the back, I decided to just cut and tie together every color change which saved me so much stress and the mess of all the yarn getting tangled
and in my mind it 'conserved yarn' rather than having 'unused' yarn floating across the giant expanse that was this project
however, that did leave me with a sandwich sized ziplock bag filled with tieoff cutoffs so I might take to facebook marketplace and see if anyone wants it or just hold onto it till september when I'm back in my apartment and my roommate can use it as stuffing for the plushies she makes
blocking wise: I don't have a blocking board or blocking set up like a fancy person, so I just used the steam function on our iron and the iron itself over the whole thing under a thin towel and manipulated it till it was in the form I wanted (more fabric like/less stiff more flowy/edges straighter)
hanging wise: got a dowell from menards and crocheted right onto it, and then made a long rope out of single chains as the hanging string/rope piece (did the chains since I wanted the hanging piece to have some strength rather than a singular piece of yarn)
things I would do different
there was a little portion where I was weaving in the white while stitching black which ended up making one section along the edge really tight and flexed in, compared to the rest of the piece
I was able to cut those out and tie them together like the rest of my color changes which fixed the flex/tension problem
but for next time, I'll just cut and tie off every color change even if it's tedious, it looks cleaner on the back and doesn't mess up the overall project tension
the eyes if I were to do this again, I would just make the whole thing (eye+iris) white, and then cross stich on top, the black pupils. which is what I did for the red/black cat but didn't for the blue/yellow (seen below)
^ I tried to cross stitch over the blue/yellow cat's eyes but it was just a pain so I only did the red/black cat :(( I'm just telling myself the variety of iris shapes gives it character and handmade charm
overall, thinking though heavy color change areas beforehand would have saved me some time and unhappiness w how some parts (the eyes) turned out. ie. doing one solid color and then stitching on another color on top after the fact which is much easier and adds a little bit of depth and texture :)
all in all...
I had a lot of fun doing this, esp for my first time doing something so big! I really want to invest in some blocking pins so I can make things a bit more neater, and I'm feeling super motivated to make more large projects like this. but yeah! this is a gift for my family friend, so not for me to keep, but I'm giving it to her today for a graduation gift since she has 4 cats and loves cats in general :D
I'd love to hear anyone comments if you've made it this far and thanks for sticking with me though this massive chunk of a post :)
