History
Comte Bertrando Vincenzo Palomo, known to the Neath as Bertrand, was born in Settimo Torinese, Italy. The Fall occurred when he was in his early twenties not long after coming to London, and he took it about as well as a young man could take it (not well). Not much is known about his Surface history, and asking him would earn you a blank expression, some puzzled stammering and not much else. Not remembering his time before the Fall doesnât seem to bother him too much, all things considered, and he writes it off as a relatively normal and uneventful past life he cannot return to.
Bertrandâs time in the Fifth City was unremarkable for yearsâhe wasnât picky about where his income came from; if a job made him money, that was fine. A vague memory of a background in chemistry made him an adept poisoner, and he put that to use. He spent most of his life as a Licentiate because he was well suited physically and had the background for the work, though what rules exactly he was enforcing seemed to only adhere to what he personally felt were appropriate. His fascination with the Neathbow speaks of a background in photochemistry that he slowly remembered over several years in the Neath.
Coming from a noble family and being particularly good at his job as well as other, more grisly sources of income make Bertrand extraordinarily wealthy, and it comes through in the way he dressesâthe man likes expensive clothes and fancies himself as a fine gentleman to look at.
Bertrand would have continued doing what he was doing had it not been for The Carnival Incident some thirty years into his time in the Neath and the emergence of a loud, hollow voice in his dreams.
Seeking
While physically incredibly formidable, Bertrandâs ability to resist the influence of the supernatural is incredibly weak. That weakness was only made worse when blended with his latent desire for vengeance, lack of purpose in the Neath and lifelong soft spot for carnival fare, and as a result he is unable to stop himself from Seeking Mr Eatenâs Name.
When it first started he was somewhat able to suppress his catastrophic hunger in social circles, and the only outwardly noticeable sign was a habit of eating things that really shouldnât be eatenâcandles, fabric and raw meat were his go-to. Soon, though, Mr Eatenâs influence over him grew strong enough that nothing would sate him and he began hunting other people for food.
Bertrand often lapses into a feral, raving cannibal running on a purely instinctive need to sate ravenous hunger with no regard for scandal or suspicion. Given that Bertrand strongly values Seeking and sees it as a noble act, the only real concern he has is whether the aforementioned cannibalâto whom he refers simply as âthe Countâ in an attempt to separate himself from his terrible actionsâdamaged his reputation in social circles.
Unfortunately for Bertrandâs reputation, Seeking has also influenced him when fully lucid, where he just considers human flesh an everyday meal and is quite surprised when his behavior is reviled by other Londoners. Those who have been unfortunate enough to end up in his grasp will find themselves as the centerpiece of a horrible perversion of a high society gathering, where the guest of honor turns out to also be the main course, and the only other attendee is the host.
Those grisly sources of income? Well if heâs going to eat you, youâre not going to need that money anymore, are you?
Personality
Prior to falling under Mr. Eatenâs influence, Bertrand was a pleasantâif a little loud and arrogantâgentleman. Now, Bertrand fights to maintain a thin veneer of that gentleman over the cruel, ill-tempered, disgustingly smug, petulant and aggressive brute that Seeking has made him. Overall heâs quite successful at maintaining that guise and presents himself as a well-mannered and reasonable man, but those who have interacted with him for an extended period, or worse crossed him, will see that the mask slips off when he doesnât get exactly what he wants.
Bertrand is observant and brilliantly intelligent, which morphs into a terrifying level of dedication to what heâs set his mind to, for good or for ill. He has been known to pursue all manner of thing with unflinching determination and never leaves a job unfinished if he can help it. Once he began Seeking, that determination only intensified, and he will pursue things with little regard for the damage heâs doing to himself or others.
As monstrous as Bertrand is, he does retain enough of himself to maintain strong bonds with a handful of others, but only time will tell if he can remain in their good graces.
Bertrand does have moralsâbut half of them are dulled and the other half poisoned.
Other Stuff That Didnât Fit Anywhere Else
Bertrandâs nails and canines are longer and sharpened as a result of an encounter with the God-Eaters.
Bertrand is emotionally attached to and in an intimate relationship with a Strange-Shore Parabolan linen suit that heâd awakened in the Maze Garden.
It is extremely difficult to poison himâhe forced himself to develop a tolerance to as many toxins as he could, knowing that at any point he may lose control of himself and eat anything he can get his hands on, inedible and otherwise.
Stains on his soul have afflicted Bertrand with a perpetual fever.
Bertrand will flirt with and be intimate with any gender, but he is only attracted to men.
While not too concerned about what else he has done to himself, Bertrand is attentive to his weeping scars and does make an attempt to keep them bandaged when he can. It wonât do to bleed on his nice suits when heâs trying to present himself as a well-mannered nobleman.
Bertrand is afflicted with gigantism, which is the source of his extraordinary height that does not run in his family. He has gone undiagnosed all his life, attributing his size to a simple quirk of being himself.
Bertrand has an incredible fondness for the Neathbow and will excitedly show you his Neathoscope if you ask him nicely.
His favorite colors are pink, purple and irrigo, and heâs usually wearing one of those.
Bertrand is so deeply in tune with hunger that he can pick it up in other people just by looking at them.
Bertrand is missing his right eye, and while he usually wears prosthetics, heâs more comfortable without them. Until he had his glass eye made, he used an onieric pearl.
While heâs most commonly heard speaking English by Londoners, he is far more comfortable speaking Italian, and while he speaks English with a Londonerâs accent, he rolls his râs and occasionally slips in Italian accentuations. His native language is Piedmontese, which colors his Italian but is almost imperceptible in English.
He has Really Long Hair and it is usually braided.
His ship (which doubles as his lodgings) is the All the Stars Devoured, which has part of the nameplate of his old ship, the All Is Well, incorporated in her hull.
When it comes to people he hunts as food, Bertrand fixates on those he perceives as closer to salvation and forgiveness than he is. He is not always right.
He also tends to hunt those who he sees as âhigh-society, fancy typesâ. His reasoning for this however is unclear.
âŠif for some reason you read all that and STILL want to send him a calling card, you can find him here. He would love to meat you.
