Intro!

Hi everyone! I'm Cannoli, I'm 24 years old and use he/him pronouns. This is my blog! Mostly, I use this as a place to ramble about my OCs, but sometimes I ramble about other things too. My activity is reasonably sporadic - my physical and mental health both aren't great, but I'm happy to be here.

I struggle sometimes with social cues/social norms, so if I fuck up, please directly tell me. I also struggle sometimes with socialization in general and with making friends, so please have grace. Mostly I'll be posting on here about my Fallen London OCs. I've been playing for about a year and a half but am still pretty early game. I was super active when I first joined, then I had a solid mental health spiral and felt like I had to make myself small, and now I'm slowly recovering and am mostly back. I'm really glad to be back. Feel free to send asks (either to me or my OCs), DM, or interact in whatever way you feel comfortable doing. Feel free to send calling cards to my OCs FL accounts as well! (Honestly Locryn is my only active in game account and Cas doesn’t even have an account) (I technically have two FL accounts for Locryn since I initially wanted to have a separate account for them to seek on so I don't completely lose everything, but I'm undecided now haha, so if I don't respond on one I'm very sorry). I've got about 4 main OCs that I'm still working with. My main OCs are:

Locryn/The Diffident Professor (they/them): an innocent and shy mycologist and professor at Benthic college who winds up seeking. I love them very much. Their full character profile/link to their in-game account is here. Tag = #Diffident Professor

Astrid/The Reluctant Thief (she/her): A thief under The Cheery Man who wants to get out of crime, is called towards revolution but probably will wind up in the Great Game, generally struggles with mental health (in an unreality/psychosis sense). Juno / The Austere Devil (ve/ver): A constable/devil/batkisser who's recovering from a prisoner's honey addiction and seeking, serious and severe but has a soft side to ver (and more trauma than ve lets on). Like oh shit, this character who was sent to spy somewhere under a false identity suddenly realises they've started to genuinely become the person they claimed to be? Someone who's been telling the same lies about who they are for so long that they're actually forgetting that the story isn't true? Finding themselves genuinely doing the things they pretend to do in front of people, when they're alone and nobody's watching? Answering to a name that wasn't supposed to be theirs without thinking?

Ooohh-hoh-hoh, you lost track of yourself in pretending to be someone else? You were only supposed to impersonate somebody, a plausible background and a name you came up with on the spot, and now that the people you were supposed to infiltrate have become your true companions? You lost yourself in the game you played, and no you no longer know who you truly are, and where your true loyalties lie? And both sides would mark you a traitor if you came out with the truth. On a scale of one to ten, how bad did you fuck up.

Fuck that is a good trope. Never seen it done badly. Pour that shit on a table and I'll chop it into lines and snort it.

So, like, as a nonbinary person who is transitioning, sometimes it feels very... disappointing for me to see a fandom immediately assume a character is a transwoman any time an otherwise male-identifying character expresses doubt or regret about his own gender expression, or vice-versa.

I'm not saying I wish people wouldn't headcanon a character to be transgender. Quite the opposite. I think it should be more queer than that. Like, the gender spectrum is so wide and diverse. You can be he/him and present female. You can be a she/her transman. You can be they/it and just be uncomfortable in men's clothing. You can be agender. You can be gender fluid.

Hell, rejecting hypermasculinity or embracing some parts of femininity doesn't even always need to be a transgender thing.

But, for some reason, despite the agreement that gender is a spectrum, "egg" characters are always assumed to be binary transgender with "his" or "her" respective pronouns.

Is it so wrong to assume a character is transgender but still use their preferred pronouns until they express otherwise? I'm aware I can't just ask the character, but also, what if they still enjoy using he/him? I can't just assume that either.

I sometimes feel like reinforcing these binaries through assumptions only leads to people feeling more insecure about exploring gender expression. A fandom will argue about whether a character is either a man or a transwoman. Man or Woman. But that feels just... so, so reductive to a person. If I was somehow in that character's place, I would be pretty pissed off that people aren't just letting me explore my options before deciding.

I knew I wasn't male. But, I had this binary placed in my brain for a long time due to this kind of narrative. When I started to explore gender, I went hard into being a transwoman, and it didn't feel right to me. It wasn't until I figured out I could be gender fluid that I actually started to feel comfortable exploring gender identity.

Anyways. I guess this is all to say, I really wish fandoms were more welcoming of other transgender identities.
