Speculating is not outing: Or why I don't think we have an obligation to "accept the line we're given"
Anyone in the CC fandom, who doesn’t live under a rock, will probably have seen the post that went round today that listed several photos of Colton Haynes with female friends in positions that may or may not suggest that he was in fact in a relationship with those women. You will also have seen the caption which asks whether these kinds of pictures “look familiar”, thus implying that similar pictures are available of other celebrities whose sexuality is subject to some public debate, but who have not come out (yet). The post seems to be particularly popular in the Larry fandom (I’m sure our little CC fandom could probably not muster over 2000 reblogs in that short a time), but it has come around our dashes too, so similar rules apply.
What not everybody may have seen is some of the counter-posts, where people object to the OP collating those pictures and making those implied suggestions, which they stand accused of doing to “promote their ship”. I saw one post in particular that got me thinking about a lot of things that I have been discussing with fellow CC shippers over the last year or so about the ethics of shipping and whether or not we have the right to challenge somebody’s self-professed sexual identity.
I didn’t want to highjack the discussion that is going on as part of the other post and this is going to be about the usual length for one of my deliberations (i.e. long!). So I made this separate post for anyone who is interested. The rest of it is under the cut.
