Like. Ok. It took me a long time and a lot of work to get to this point but tldr, it’s a combo of feeling confident in your presence and taking the space you deserve AND the people around you sparking said confidence and making space for you. Both need to exist. If either of those are lacking then the feeling will present itself, and you simply have to do something about it. I was drowning in the sea of that feeling everywhere I went until I had enough of suffering needlessly and made my own pond. Doing so is no small task by any means but my GOD it is worth it.

It's not really a problem if an author gets off on what they're writing, the author's feelings about a subject aren't inherently an obstacle

But treating a specific theme or topic as one-note, so that your portrayal of it is one-dimensional and unnuanced? That IS an artistic obstacle

So when we say that an author's portrayal of women is fetishistic, for example, it's that they're reduced to their sexual appeal and lack depth as characters, or only serve aesthetic or shallow emotional purposes within a given text, and THAT's the problem, not whether or not they're hot

i think we've done a great job expanding the view of what a child's favorite animal can be. kids these days can say they love axolotls or pangolins or coelecanths and their decision is respected. maybe their parents can even find them a stuffed animal of it if they know where to look. and i think that's beautiful

the whole "insulting someone based on their appearance is bad because it could indirectly hurt people you like who share that feature" is a good start for unlearning body shaming but i do think we need to go further and remind people that even if there was some physical trait that was magically 10000% exclusive to conservatives and creeps and nobody else ever had it, we still shouldnt be insulting them based on that. because the problem with them is not their appearance its their ideology and actions. by insulting their appearance you arent just indirectly insulting others who look like that, youre literally not making the correct point. stay on topic ya know.
