I've been seeing some talk on the internet about where the term "deadname" comes from and it has been incorrect, so I thought I would post Brandon Teena's gravestone as an obvious example of where the word comes from. It's the name your unsupportive family puts on your tombstone when you're dead and can't object.

Thankfully, families are less likely to hate their trans children/relatives these days than they used to be, so this shit is less common. But it still happens.

Sorry to put this raw shit out there but I just feel like this is information the community shouldn't forget.

This movie is incredibly sad and the main reason why I have dedicated my life to the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Every day of our lives must be spent struggling to break the molds that we have created for ourselves. Trans people are still dying because they are at the front of that struggle. We see them as the people that push and stretch the boundaries of the human existence; of our current reality. While that is an over simplification, it is still an uncomfortable truth for many people. So uncomfortable that some are willing to kill over it. We must hold each other accountable to figure out why that is. Brandon Teena, as well as many others, deserved better than what they got. They deserve to be alive and loved. Trans people are still quietly dying while our country continues to justify not providing better protection, health care, and research for them. It is our duty to stand with our trans comrades and protect them always.
