one of my absolute least favourite tropes is when a character is faced with some sort of difficult moral choice and they just straight up refuse to engage with it at all and do the uncomplicated idealistic thing and then it works out due to purely external circumstances that had jack shit to do with them. it's such an absolute non-statement like yeah i guess we would all be unconditionally kind if we knew events would conspire to make things end well for us
it's like how in bioshock you could murder the little sisters for resources but if you rescued them you got a big gift basket of resources anyway, instantly turning the comparatively interesting question of 'will you kill these innocent children to make your own survival easier' into the very boring question of 'will you kill these children because youre a sickopath who loves killing'
