Never Far, 2013. Oil on Canvas.
Love is never far.
Moonlit Horses, 2018, Oil on Canvas. Inspired by a late evening drive through the ranches and pastures of Saint Cloud, Florida. I came upon this group of horses so beautifully composed, peacefully eating their grass in such tranquil light.
My Grandfather and His Brother on His Wedding Day. Painted 1994.
I painted this back in 1994, from a sepia tone photograph from my Grandparents wedding in the late 40's. It has long been one of my favorite works. Not only due to the subject, but really the way it came about. (First impressions have taken on a life of their own - many people think since two men are represented it must be of a gay wedding. Ironic? Timely? Whatever. I think my grandfather is very proud of his gay grandson.)
Regardless, I've rarely had a painting come through so effortlessly, without a hint of struggle, especially with such a distinctive color palette and more abstract representation of the figure. This one just flowed. I still remember painting it, and I can't recall stopping to think about any of it. It just happened. I think it took a day and a half to complete.
Since I had it digitally scanned a couple of weeks ago, I've looked at it much closer, and I'm even more curious about it.
My Grandfather was able to see a picture of the painting before he passed, and apparently remembered this moment in his life very well. Even though I didn't get to spend much time with him, he lived in Massachusetts and I in Minneapolis, I get the feeling it represents the way he looked at his life.
