Does anybody know..
paperbackmark:
Yeah! Um, there’s a really nice one on Broadway Street that I stopped by just yesterday after aimlessly wandering the city a bit. I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
You. I know you. Mark, yes?
Hello, Mark.
Table For Two || James, Delia
darkdelia:
The reason why Delia and James got along so well was because they were so similar, they looked at the world from the same point of view and that made things between them much easier, especially in the beginning. They both knew exactly what they wanted and didn’t let anyone stop them from achieving their goals. That’s why Delia knew James needed her so much at the moment, she hadn’t lost that spark inside of her just yet, and she hoped that her own spark would ignite the old fire inside of James again.
Delia listened to him explain that they could still afford going out like decent people and just as she was about to speak up and say that wasn’t what she meant, she noticed a slight smirk on his face. A smile spread on Delia’s lips that same moment, the old James was still there. "That sounds way better than hanging at a pub full with idiots." She replied. "I’ll just run to one of those shops and buy us beer. I’ll be right back." She announced and got out of the car quickly.
Three minutes later, Delia was back inside James’ car, holding a six pack. “We’re ready to go wherever you want.” She said, smirking.
"Ah, the lady never disappoints."
James gave no real reaction as he turned the key, the Denali engine roaring to life again. He had grown up in Florence, was used to his isolated home and privacy. He was used to walking around the small town as if he owned it and now? Now he was just another face in the Portland crowd. And Portland was an entirely different creature. He was used to Sutherlin, where his company was based and operated out of, but he had only ever really visited for business and even then his hotel was, of course, luxurious. James had no working knowledge of a place where there were more lights and buildings than trees and scattered stars. The new environment assaulted his senses, too, and James found he had a headache more often than not.
He was alive, though.
And so was his Delia.
He would start his personal reconstruction with those facts in mind. James had lost a lot and bottled the anger, the grief, and the white-hot thirst for revenge but there were people who lost so much more; many of them lost loved ones thanks to him. He had hurt people and would go on to hurt people again, he knew...but it was only ever out of his own heartache. Losing his mother was the catalyst. Now people lost sons, daughters, wives, lovers, husbands, friends and James fell to grieving all over again. Delia's presence at his side anchored him, though, and reminded him that though there was loss there were also things to gain and happiness to uncover. Most importantly, looming seemingly out of reach, was Redemption.
For the immediate moment, however, there was only Delia. James drove without really knowing where he was going, just looking to get away from the more populated areas. Eventually he pulled over onto the shoulder and cut the lights, running his palms along his jeans to rid them of sweat.
"I think we'll have our privacy here, love."
Bury the hatchet || James and Abel
abel-sinclair:
Abel hadn’t received his beer just yet, but it was good he didn’t considering James had just arrived. His brown eyes raised up to James’ arm, then ran smoothly up to the older male’s face littered with facial hair. The corners of his lips twitched up when he noticed it, but the smile was barely there, therefore it disappeared quickly. He had his hands clasped on the table in front of him, body propped forward and shoulders hunched. His long legs were bent and used as an anchor to keep him from sliding forward in his seat.
His dark brows raised slightly at the sound of his name, and he gave a slight smile at it and nodded, “James.” He returned, then nodded to the bartender when James’ presence was noticed, and soon enough there were cold beers in front of both men. Abel picked at the label on his bottle, eyes darting from the droplets rolling down the caramel colored glass to the tired expression lingering on his Alpha’s face.
"And so here we are."
He offered evenly, turning his own bottle to glimpse the label while biting his tongue to keep from spitting out a nasty comment about a cheap brand. Up until Florence had been invaded by hunters, James had lived a lavish, selfish life. He'd been spoiled during childhood, his mother's only son. When he claimed Wolfus for his own, people showered him with gifts in attempts to get in his good graces. It was incredibly flattering and ego-boosting at first but in that moment, sitting with one of his surviving wolves, James realized the only good it had ever done was brought Delia into his life. So James was trying to live a more humble life. And failing quite miserably.
James lifted the beer to take a strong pull from the bottle, grateful for the carbonation bubbling down into the knotted pit of his stomach. He relaxed back against the booth afterwards, thumbnail idly scratching at the corner of the label while he looked around at other patrons. So many people who simple had no clue. No clue at all what both of them, what all of them, had been through. Oblivious, useless people. Welcome to Portland.
Portland...
sydneyhawn:
Y-yes, t-this is Portland..
I'm aware. I'm James.
Hello.
Does anybody know..
..of any good book stores?
Abel knew he wasn’t alone in Portland; he had Romulus, and James, and Delia, and everyone else, but he still felt alone regardless considering Jael was off on some random adventure with a complete stranger he had never heard about. That irritated him to no end, but whatever, he’d deal with that later. The tall male shrugged on a dark jacket, fixed his combat boots and sighed deeply as he played with the tousles of chocolate brown hair, his narrow eyes looking over his lanky appearance with disdain. Abel wrinkled his nose up before shoving his wallet into his jean pocket and headed out, the air a weird warm, but it wasn’t overly unpleasant, and the sun had lowered mostly behind the horizon, casting an ominous glow upon the city of Portland. His long legs carried him swiftly among the various passersby, moving among them almost invisible as if he never existed in the first place. That was an unsettling thought, but he knew once he reached the bar he would be noticed, and spoke to. Abel dug his fists deeper into his jacket as he rounded the final street before arriving at Henry’s, and opened the door, wondering if James had beaten him here — no, he had not. The younger male settled for a spot on the bar in the corner, far from prying ears; then again, there weren’t that many people in here to begin with. Good, he didn’t want anyone listening in on their conversation. Abel ordered himself a beer, and sat there puttering about in his seat as he waited for his Alpha to show up.
James stood debating on whether or not to shave for far longer than he ought to have, likely because he needed any reason not to go outside a moment before he had to. Knowing that he would have to keep his eye on the reclusive tendencies developing in the aftermath of Florence's decline, James pried himself away from the small mirror with the conclusion that he didnt yet have the strength mustered to bother shaving. A new start, Delia had called this. A new look for a new start, he reasoned. Also better not to walk about easily recognizeable; James was a man with enemies. He settled on jeans, a black tshirt, and old sneakers as well as his glasses. For all anybody knew, he was a writer or a guitarist or just some schlub with a podcast. James also passed the bar several times, unaccustomed to Portland's layout and suffering obviously for it, but eventually he did enter. His eyes instantly scanning the patrons, it didnt surprise James to find Abel in the corner and James approached casually so as not to startle the younger wolf. He put his hand on his shoulder in passing, smoothly sliding into the other side of the booth. "Abel."
Delia smiled at her mate, only now she had looked at him properly for the first time in weeks. He looked tired and she almost suggested that they should stay in, but Delia figured going out might put him in a slightly better mood. Looking back on all the years they had spent together, Delia realized that she had grown to care about James a lot, something she wasn’t sure about how or when had happened. In the beginning, it was simply about power, the power that came with being the Alpha’s mate, but now — Delia genuinely cared about the man in front of her, and she intended on doing everything in her power to help him get back to the top. Taking his hand, she climbed inside the vehicle and waited for James to do the same before she continued the conversation. “I think I saw some sort of a bar or a pub a couple of blocks away from here just yesterday, we could check it out.” She suggested. “If that doesn’t work out, we could get a couple of beers and just sit under the sky, I don’t care.”
It was weird to need her. James hasn't realized until their world started to crumble that he needed Delia. She was his best friend and confidant, his rock without realizing it and the inspiration for a great number of atrocities James executed in his repertoire; even down on his luck, he would gladly spill blood for the beautiful creature beside him. It helped that she was just as ruthless. It made James feel less alone in a world where people would rather roll over and obey than get their hands dirty. "I believe I've seen it." He chuckled bitterly at her next suggestion, slowing the truck down as they neared a chain of shops. "...we're not so desperate yet that I can't take you out to dinner." He was about to continue on about how it seemed a thing for children to do when something tugged at him and he eased the truck off to the side. Sighing as he leaned forward to rest his arms on the steering wheel, the traces of his first smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Fuck it. Let's get a six pack and lay on the hood, somewhere."
It was strange, how fast things changed, how much life could surprise you. Delia’s biggest care in the world used to be who else should she find to entertain herself with, and the past week she was busy trying not to lose her own head. Now that they had all arrived to Portland (well, most of them), Delia tried to convince everyone they were safe, that Florence was behind them, but even she wasn’t sure in that. But she wasn’t going to show it, and she didn’t let anyone complain because the last thing she wanted was for James to lose what was left of his confidence. He did everything in his power to take his pack to safety, and Delia appreciated that. She suggested for the two of them to have dinner, something they hadn’t done in a while, and she found herself looking forward to it as she was getting ready. Once she was done, Delia headed outside and spotted James waiting for her. She approached him with a smile and pressed her lips on his briefly. “Good evening, love.” She said. “So, where are we going? I haven’t had the time to explore this town yet.”
James kissed back, moving afterwards to glide his bearded cheek along her own ; his wolf greeting hers. He closed his eyes for a moment and breathed in the scent of his mate, grateful that she deemed him worthy enough to stay with. He had fully expected her to leave him. Why she hadn't was beyond him. James flicked the cigarette filter into the street and gently took her hand, leading her to the passengers' side. After opening the door, he kept a hand extended in case she needed help getting up into the Denali. At her question, his expression darkened. "...I don't know. I barely know what restaurants are here. I figured we could just explore. Perhaps there is a specific area for the night life. I wouldn't know."
Portland...
That’s where you’re wrong. It does make a difference, both good and bad, but it does.
...one thing more for me to be wrong about, then. How did you get out?
Table For Two || James, Delia
The adjustment to Portland was not one that was going to be easy for him. James had a reputation in Florence, for better or worse, but after the move- after the retreat that shamed him so- he was nobody. A disgraced alpha, a fallen tyrant? Maybe. But nobody first and foremost. Also used to lavish, pointlessly expensive things, it felt weird to be getting ready to go out to dinner in nothing but jeans and a short-sleeved, plaid patterned shirt. What few beers he had with Abel worked to calm his nerves but James was dragging hard, uneasily, on his cigarette while he waited on the curb by his truck for Delia.
Portland...[private]
We should go out, drink some wine, have dinner. We haven’t done that in a while and you need to relax.
Her best friends are dead, James, give her some space. She is an adult, she knows what’s good for her and what isn’t. But I will ask around about this Jacob, see if anyone knows something.
...I would like that. You're right, of course, but given what's transpired I'd much prefer her here with her brother.
Portland...[private]
And you don’t have anything to be miserable for. Portland is a new start for us, remember?
Jacob? No, I’m not familiar with the name. I could ask around, if you want.
...I'm trying to remember that, love. Still, I feel like a shell. I would like to know what strange men she runs off with at random, yes.
Portland...
That would be correct. Though I—I am glad to see you’re alright.
...no need for formalities or humoring, sweetness. I doubt my presence here makes much of a difference to you.
Portland...[private]
You seem to be in a good mood, I am glad.
I'm too tired to be miserable, today. I've touched base with Abel, besides. Do you know anything about some Jacob that Jael is supposedly with?
