What camera would you recommend for a beginner?

Someone once told me to “go big or go home.” 

Although depending on what you’re trying to do with photography this might not be good advice, I do suggest that you get your hands on the best equipment that you can. Cameras don’t matter matter too much when it comes to making great imagery (what you point it at does) but having good gear makes things easier on your end. Canon makes solid cameras (5D series) and amazing glass but if you want more dynamic range I would personally opt for Nikon (D800 series). Even if you’re completely clueless at the beginning, you’ll grow into whichever camera body you choose. Just practice and shoot as much as you can, but most importantly, take photos of things that you love!

What do you use the most, matrix metering, center wrighted or spot?

It depends on the situation. For photos where my main concern is to get a specific thing properly exposed, I’ll use spot metering. Works really well with portraits that have moody lighting and concerts where only one thing is lit.

Now if the light is more evenly distributed throughout the frame I’ll use matrix metering to get the best exposure since it measures all of the light in the field of view, not just one specific area like in spot and center weighted.

When did you start learning about photography?

Hey!

I started learning around middle school (i’m currently a senior in high school) when I got my first film camera. Books, articles, and the internet were my first source of education when it comes to photography and they continue to be the main ones. I also shadow or bts photographers from time to time, which has really helped me learn about the creative and business process of being a working photographer in the industry. 

As Joey L once said, “If you don’t have the capacity to learn independently, if you don’t have that work ethic, you’re never going to make it as a photographer. Ever. If you can’t figure it out on your own, you’re doomed.”

The best way to learn is by doing. Trail and error has been my best teacher and I honestly believe that this holds true for anyone in the creative field. There’s no right or wrong way to do things. As long as it works for you then its all good.

Hi! How did you get so good in photography?

Hey, friend! I really appreciate that!

Time, honestly. I started shooting around middle school when my father gave me an old film camera. Technically, I started on a simple digital slr a few weeks before that, but the film camera taught me how to look at the world around me. The fact that every shot costs money, and you only have a limited number of frames really makes you pay attention to the small details such as settings, composition and obviously the things that you will be burning onto the film.

Its still a work in progress though. I learn something new every day.

The Searchers

Looking at the sunrise in Monument Valley with my good friend Royden Teeasyatoh, an extremely skilled Navajo horse rider and Utah native. Royden and I had talked about doing some shooting and exploring in the valley for quite some time now, so it was definitely a pleasure to go out there and meet him "in the flesh", as he said, and do some work with him. Good guy, definitely going to try to go back and shoot with him once the landscape gets a little bit more interesting during the winter.

Texas High School Football State Championship PT.1

I had the pleasure of shooting the Texas High School State Football Championship for US Nike Football a couple of days ago. History was made, Allen High School took their third consecutive state title home, winning 47-16 against Cypress Ranch. Allen High School is, #TEXASTESTED.
