Okay, but what if

what if Abbot asks Robby to not to disappear and reach out if shit gets bad, because once before, he got a frantic voice message from Robby saying he loved him and didn't want to die, and to leave everything he owned to Jake, and then it cut off abruptly.

The news are not helping. Abbot spends days not knowing what happened to Robby, until he learns about the Nova music festival massacre -and right, he remembers Robby said something about visiting his family in Jerusalem and then maybe going for a trip in the south on his way back - except, when Robby finally is back, he's not talking. He ignores it the same way he ignores everything problematic in his life.

Robby acts as if that WhatsApp message never existed and as if Nova might never have happened, given how vehemently Robby avoided the topic. Abbot gives him the benefit of the doubt. Trusts him to come to him, if needed. Robby doesn't, and he seems stable-ish. Abbot will just keep talking to him about therapy and support groups and shit, until one time Robby will explode and tell him to fuck off. It's not like he knew what it was like to be hated for what he was and what he represented. (Except, well, maybe Abbot is the only one who does).

Eventually, he stops asking. He lurks in the shadows and makes sure that Robby's eating and sleeping and that his caffeine intake is, at least, deadly only if you think about it in horse terms.

And then, the Pittfest shooting.

okay okay so I’ve seen a bunch of (really good) “Geralt gets to hear Jaskier’s thoughts” fics floating around but consider this: Unbeknownst to Geralt, due to magical shenanigans Jaskier can hear Geralt’s thoughts - which consists primarily of a single, never-ending, insufferable, flowery Shakespearean monologue about how hopelessly in love he is with Jaskier and every little thing he does.

I theorize that queer people might love the italicized “oh” moment in romance novels and fanfics because we experienced it in real life, when we realized we were queer. We’ve had that moment where all the pieces clicked together and suddenly everything makes sense. We’ve stood dumbfounded as a ton of little things suddenly stand out blazing in hindsight. We’ve realized how obvious it’s been, all this time, and suddenly everything seems different and terrifying and wonderful. We’ve had that seismic shift, learning something that can never ever ever be unlearned. And genuinely, the only thing you can really say is oh.

It’s part of our love language. I will use it in every fanfic I write until I die.

Torchwood and the (Mis)treatment of its Characters of Color

Let’s be honest; despite its decent track record with queer characters, Torchwood has a problem with how it treats its characters of colors, and I say this as a South Asian, bisexual fan of the show. 

For the purposes of this post, I will only be looking at the Torchwood television series (so spoilers for Seasons 1 and 2, Children of Earth, and Miracle Day), and not as Big Finish Torchwood releases since I do not believe myself to be well-versed enough in them to be able to make an accurate post. And also, as much as I love Big Finish for eveything they’re doing, on-screen POC representation is very different from audio POC representation. (And for the purposes of this post, I will not be addressing the mistreatment of Martha Jones, which really, if you think about it, stems from Doctor Who and not Torchwood.)

TLDR; Torchwood has neglected or mistreated its characters of color, given them little or no background, and brutally killed them off, often for shock value.

Honestly, that essay-like post just adds up to my own perspective of British (Western, for that matter) writers being unable to write things & keep in mind honest & real representation of groups they aren’t a part of. I mean, of course, we have queer representation which was great, especially for that time period but that doesn’t excuse the way the show portraited everything else - the “smart asian” trope, using poc in building white male characters’ backgrounds, etc. And don’t get me started on Lisa Hallet’s portrayal in ‘Cyberwoman’.
