You know what the Torchwood fandom doesn't talk enough about? Ianto fighting at the battle of canary wharf. Just imagine how traumatic that must have been for him? Or what he had to do to survive? There were 823 employees at Torchwood One and only 27 survived. That’s .03% of the employees. That is terrifying. Ianto was Yvonne’s personal assistant, so I imagine that Ianto had some sort of combative training for missions. But no one could have predicted what would eventually happen to Torchwood One. So no one had training on how to fight Cybermen and Daleks. 

Listen, it’s been MANY years since I’ve watched Army of Ghosts and Doomsday, so I don’t remember much. I mainly remember the Cybermen and Daleks (and what happened to Rose, of course). So last week, I was on the torchwood wiki looking up what happened to the torchwood members in the audio books. I SERIOUSLY FORGOT YVONNE WAS TURNED INTO A CYBERMAN. Just imagine Ianto finding out his boss was turned into a cyberman, how broken he must have felt.

I mention what I remember because I can’t recall what was going on in Torchwood before the battle. People coming into work not knowing it would be their last day on this earth. Ianto walking into Canary Wharf with Lisa for a normal day of work, kissing her goodbye, saying hi to Tommy and Kieran on his way up to Yvonne’s Office, only to find a strange man yelling at her. Yvonne tells him to just go about his day as normal, make coffee, paperwork, file, etc. In the middle of the day, suddenly the alarms start going off warning employees of danger. Metal men come out of nowhere and start taking people to be upgraded and if they refuse they are deleted. Just imagine how traumatizing that must be? To have nowhere to go? Imagine hearing “Delete. You will be upgraded.  You will become like us.  Upgrading is compulsory.” everywhere you go. Ianto had to fight for him life. I can’t imagine the things he had to do to survive. The things he saw. 

We caught a glimpse of Ianto talking about Canary Wharf in Torchwood Broken.   

“ Fall. It makes it sound so like... well like a film. [Mimics an announcer] 'The dramatic fall of Canary Wharf coming soon to a cinema screen.' It was a slaughter house. Wasn't just Lisa... I lost so many friends. I lost my boss, lost Yvonne.... She wasn't all bad. In fact, it was... her that got me and Lisa together. She was just a person doing her job and suddenly... she was gone and everyone. All of them. And Lisa. I lost everything that day. Except for a tiny bit of Lisa and that was all I had.”

This is fascinating to me! Like I wanna hear more people talk about this! Torchwood never really touched upon it, except for Cyberwoman. Also just imagine the emotions going through Ianto when he heard “Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!” in Stolen Earth. That must have terrified him. Since he’s seen first hand what Daleks can do.
