It’s been discussed but i cant get over how ridiculous L’s lines in the game begins are specifically ’a kilobyte of information and soon a corner’s turned’ and ‘i sift 1000 pixels’ because. that’s nothing. L thats literally NOTHING. he’s turning the corner with approximately 1/20th of a blank word document and THIS:

lawmane ghost trick au where L dies canonstyle and then has to spend the whole years-long time skip saving misa from various dooms (she always dies from these in attempts to try and save light) while misa is like oh my god you again i'd take dying for my light over seeing your stupid face so often you know that and L is like believe me i don't want to do this either but if either of you die the mystery of kira will never be properly deduced (<- has been trying to trick light's watch open in front of the task force for weeks) and misa is like what the hell is your problem and L is like what the hell is YOUR problem . and then they can fall in love or whatever

borrowed scene from ghost trick: light and misa are on a date at a chicken restaurant when a truck crashes through the window and misa manages to push light out of the way just in time except the truck has destabilized the massive chicken statue hanging from the ceiling in the restaurant and misa gets crushed underneath it and dies that way. L finds his way over to her from his usual spot possessing light's watch and is like are you doing this on purpose. misa is like why would i ever want to see you on purpose

anyway they work together to rewind time to save both the truck driver and misa (there's a solution where you as L [the player character] can try distracting the past version of misa in time for light to be run over by the truck instead. if you do this present-misa starts disintegrating the game screen until you stop) and everything is a-okay again. light picks at his salad while misa eats her chicken cheerfully and L (possessing misa's fork) (this too is yuri) sulks. just another day in their beautiful lives

if i were to articulate an actual premise i think that L is canonically morbidly fascinated by misa's complete lack of fear of death when it's in service of saving light. and i don't think misa cares about L much at all (because she doesn't care about anyone much at all except light) so she defaults to 'dislike' that occasionally swings into shallow meaningless 'like' when L does something nice, but the one thing she actually appreciates about him is that he doesn't treat her like glass. L sees a weapon in her and unlike yotsuba light doesn't hesitate to use it and so the two of them work well together despite it all. something something.

in this sense i suppose ghost trick au is kind of the equal inverse of yotsuba arc in the sense that physically L is now the one trapped while light and misa are free but emotionally of course they are all still in the meat grinder. but now instead of L and light being stuck together (shared fate et cetera) it's L and misa. and while obviously misa would do anything to save light no matter what i think part of the reason she becomes so determined to never let light die even though she knows by now L could save him is that if L revives light then by the rules of ghost trick light also becomes aware of L and the conversations misa is having with him, and misa wants this phenomenon to herself. she wants the romance of silently suffering over and over to save light. and despite what she says it is kind of nice that L is there because being a romantic martyr gets loneloh my god i've just made L her shinigami haven't i

Sometimes I think about the irony that light such a femme fatale even though he's (gestures vaguely). all of his plans are literally "oh, I'll seduce so-and-so before brutally betraying them once they've outlived their use :] god women are so shallow and silly" and then the moment his plan can't use that (like with near) he's screaming and crying on the floor

Killing raye penber? seduce a woman to go on a date with.

killing naomi? gain her trust then discard her.

killing L? befriend him then discard him.

killing L? seduce a woman then discard her.

KILLING L? seduce a woman then discard her SHINIGAMI! the entire yotsuba arc revolves around this same premise as well!!!

"how should I get my fans to kill near?" gain their trust then manipulate/throw them at the wall. mikami? takada? the task force? take a BIG guess buddy. oops! all pawns!

And then mello and near show up, the ONLY two characters Light can't tide over and GUESS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE GOES AGAINST THEM!!! hint: fucking dies

so naturally i decided to cause myself more pain.

these two panels actually really interest me because of the use of light’s shadow. at the beginning, there’s a distance between him and his shadow—and a distance between his mindset and the mindset of “kira”. by the end, light and “kira” have really and truly become one and the same, and in this shot of him, he’s completely within his shadow… even though it’s turned into something bigger than himself.
