hello everyone i read resurrection fern by 3kanite (are they on here?? can i tag them??) on ao3 and this is a rendition of a moment from the bat shit insane first chapter (seriously what the fuck). i tried to capture johnnys disgust and shock and gyros utter confusion… man it was such a horrible thing to read 😭 so good tho 😭
the author is so incredibly thoroughly researched and wrote beautifully on many themes and bits about sbr that ive been pondering for a while now. honestly it was crazy to read characterizations and headcanons so shockingly similar to those i had in my head, especially the part about johnny drawing in his notebook which i just posted about 😭
i think my favorite thing was how they described the copious presence of the golden spiral in nature as a necessary constant reminder of beauty, and the connection of that concept to johnny and gyro’s alternate versions of each other blew my mind and made me cry. i also cried at sugar mountain part 2 where dead gyro says those canon final words to johnny ok bro twist the knife

Okay guys call me crazy, but when i first watched this i got a crazy flashback. This scene weirdly gives off the vibe of the fight between Wu and Garmadon, basically the fight between dark n light, not "good vs bad" more like hatred and trust some kind of.
I'm still watching the new season, and it's so peak, guys.

Heatwave is still healing. His breathing is less strained than before, and his wound is looking much better after Kai’s stupid, begrudgingly-cool rock trick.
Speaking of Kai, he’s awake, sitting, watching the dragon core glow. It illuminates his face in the dark like a fire, but without the cool flickering. It’s steady and uncomfortable, artificial, not a natural living, breathing thing like fire is.
“Kai?” She rubs her eyes with her wrist until she sees sparks and colours behind her eyes and then squints when he doesn’t respond. It’s weird that he’s awake. Weirder still that he didn’t respond to her. Maybe she missed it.
”Kai?” she tries again.
When he doesn’t respond the second time either. She feels a bit grouchy. Offended. Annoyed. She knows he’s awake, she can see the light from the dragon cores reflecting off the eye, almost white. She stands, giving him the courtesy of grunting and grumbling so he knows she’s awake and annoyed. She gives heatwave a pat and he responds with a low grumbling of acknowledgement back. At least someone isn’t ignoring her.
“Kai.” She says. Nothing still. So she speaks louder and with more growl. “Hey. Kai—“
It happens so fast she doesn’t see it.
One second he’s looking at the dragon core and the next his head has snapped to look at her, but it’s not Kai; His eyes are white.
His name catches in her throat. They’re empty. They’re too-wide. There’s no hint of pupils or anything else. There was no hint of feeling or a dragon—person. The hairs on the back of her arms, her back, her neck all stand on end.
Then he blinks, and it’s gone.
“Sorry,” says just Kai.” Were you saying something?”
Wyldfyre doesn’t know when her arms came up, posed, ready to fight.
Wylfyre was very awake now.
“Wyldfyre?”
“You were just…” She hears herself. Unsure, feeble. Very not-dragon. Kai’s looking at her. He looks like Kai. His eyes are brown with that warmth she’s gotten so used to seeing coming from them. He looks stupid. His hair is fluffy and soft. He looks soft. There’s no sign of what she had been so sure had been staring at her a moment before. It was so brief she couldn’t even be sure she had seen it.
“Nevermind.” Wyldfyre forces her hands down and clenches them at her side. “I’m probably just sleepy,” is what she tells him, to make sure he knows she’s still more dragon-ish than him. “Why are you awake like a weirdo?”
“Oh, hah,” Kai says. “Just thinking.”
She’s squinting at him. “You do that?”
When Kai smiles. And it’s annoying, warm and soft. “Sometimes.”
“Gross,” she says, crossing her arms.
“It’s quiet here,” Kai says. It’s out-of-pocket. It’s not really relevant. When he says it, he sounds different.
”Whatever,” Wyldfyre says, turning away. “I’m going back to sleep.”
“Okay,” Kai says to her back as she goes. “G’night.”
Heatwave rumbles as Wyldfyre crawls under his arm. She pretends to get comfy and risks a glance back.
Kai’s back to staring at the dragon core. His hair is over his eyes, blocking them from her view. But Wyldfyre thinks she still sees white between the strands.
The trope where people don't recognize each other because it's been so long since they last interacted and they've both changed so much that they're basically strangers UNTIL one of them does their Signature Thing™ and the other just stops dead because oh. It's YOU. All at once it's so clearly you
headcanon because i saw a post sometime today (i’m sorry i can’t remember who said it) saying the ‘kai and nya are new kids who are oblivious to lloyd being garmadon’s kid and befriend him’ trope is shallow and overdone. i’m not hating on any writers who use this. i’m not hating on anyone who enjoys reading this. instead, i’m going to offer an alternative take.
so let’s go with the headcanon that kai is a cool kid. he’s the popular captain of the soccer team. he’s hotheaded. he does okay academically. and just like the rest of the school he hates lloyd garmadon. he believes the rumors that he’s a spy for his dad. he sees lloyd and assumes the kid must be evil. he never bothers to ask himself if any of it’s true.
then it’s just one of those days where the soccer team is bullying lloyd because surely that makes them heroes, right? they’re standing up to evil and doing the right thing. it’s fine. it’s normal. then everyone walks away to go home laughing because they feel good about the heroic act they’ve done. they’re practically superheroes in their own stories.
kai turns around and lloyd’s just sitting there, pressed into a corner and crying. let’s take a break from the present and think about who kai is for a moment. he’s an older brother. he’s an orphan. he’s a teenager who was forced to raise his sister from when they were both kids.
kai starts to doubt himself because he looks at lloyd and sees nya. and that’s terrifying. he turns around and doesn’t look back and goes home.
the next time it happens, he intervenes because he can’t stop looking at this damn kid without his stupid protective instincts creeping up on him. the other guys sarcastically ask if he’s joined garmadon or gone soft because they still think they’re serving justice. it grows and grows and grows until rumors are flying that lloyd’s turned him. he loses everything because even the faculty and staff believe the narrative that lloyd is evil and if he dared lift a finger to defend him that means he must be brainwashed, too.
kai ends up getting to know lloyd because the kid that started this whole thing is the only one willing to talk to him. kai convinces nya that lloyd really isn’t the way the rumors say he is. nya convinces jay. jay convinces cole. zane wanders in when he notices a new friend group that he never predicted starting to form (they’re the only ones he thinks might include him instead of ostracizing him for being ‘weird’) and boom. *mic drop*
