i don't really like it when western mythological terms are applied haphazardly to essentially unrelated ideas. this is a completely lost battle but a lóng is really not a dragon, it is its own thing with only surface level similarities

This is by a patient of mine with early late stage dementia, who was a poet for most of her life. Her new poems are dictated to me during writing workshops I run at my hospice job. She hadn't written since her diagnosis. This is one of seventeen poems I've written with her so far.

Working with her was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I mean it when I say you all are so lucky to get even this glimpse at the majesty of her work.

In a sense, it doesn’t matter how ridiculous it sounds to think Pepsi would genuinely honour that. Pepsi said that they would, therefore they have to, or else they’re guilty of false advertising. watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.

sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.

society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.

turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.

my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.

also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.

ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.

- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.

Insurance companies are also really shitty about covering CPAP machines and will try to make you lease them for hundreds a month before you own one, and they reserve the right to repossess it if you don't wear it enough! But there are cheaper ways to own one ⤵️

So here’s the thing. white people don’t believe that Black people can create art without it having something to do with them. Our films must teach them lessons, our books and songs and outworks must inform them, in no uncertain terms, that slavery bad, drugs bad, racism bad, and if not then it’s a Bad Movie, and Not Effective and Disappointing. If our art doesn’t include a Sesame Street style lesson on the Horrors of Being Black, then it’s bad screen-writing and lazy and a bunch of other buzzwords. If we don’t gently coddle them and hold their hands and give them easy to swallow theory, or give some sort of strong message on violence, drugs, police brutality, etc., then it’s bad. 

I just think it’s so annoying that everything I do as an artist has to mean something to white people. I don’t write to teach white people lessons. I’m sure most Black filmmakers don’t make their movies to teach white people lessons. Black artists have the right to make art for the sake of making art. We’re allowed to tell stories that are entirely divorced from politics. I don’t even know how to put it into words, but I’m tired of white people thinking that Black people are put on this earth to entertain and teach them. It’s frustrating and tiring and I wish that Black creators were allowed to just be,

I was today years old when I learnt about what those symbols in Aboriginal art represented I honestly can't believe we never got taught that, even when I was studying art. I always assumed they had meaning but no one [no white person] had ever bothered to mention it. I'm glad I learnt something new today.

Yeah, I think a lot of people tend to look down on Aboriginal art because they think it's a form of abstract art that is just lines and shapes but almost all of them tell a story. Sometimes it's a very obvious story, such as the emu dreaming where the waterhole flooded, and sometimes it's more symbolic.

the circle in the middle is a waterhole/dam or billabong. The squiggly lines coming out of it are small rivers. the dots represent the earth but because they are in neat lines, it almost feels as if they have been flattened by the flooded water, especially as the vector lines draw out from the waterhole in the middle. the emu tracks are heading toward the waterhole, and the three lines in the middle are marks left by their tail, implying that they are wading through the mud to get there.

It's a birdseye view of a moment just after the waterhole floods and afterwards the emus go looking for food.

It's Interesting, because the original artist D. J. Ross was from Yuendumu which is in central australia, so this would have been a rare time that there was enough rain to flood the waterhole.

Dreaming stories, kinship links, sacred rites, keeping track of biodiversity and songlines are some other topics covered by Aboriginal art.

In the same way monet painted the middle class and the local landscape in the late 1800's/early 1900's Aboriginal people also paint the average lifestyle of our people. It just looks different.

For example, this picture shows a LOT of activity. The men at the top left of the picture are doing a cultural burn near and around a sacred site, the women at the bottom left are digging for food. across the river, on the right the people are preparing food and in the center, two people (presumably elders) are preparing for a ceremony.

I wouldn't say these all happened at the same time, more that this was a common undertaking over a set of time.

it takes time to understand and not all symbols are the same in all areas, but once you do understand them it becomes easier to see the story being told.

So yeah, I hope this gives you the chance to look at Aboriginal art with new eyes

There's so much shit happening but I'll try to be brief.

I'm trans nonbinary, I have two trans kids and my youngest daughter is trans, we've been facing transphobic attacks from my father-in-law which has made our housing situation unsafe.

Aside from that she had a surgery last year but turns out the diagnosis was wrong and the problem is back and worse, she needs another surgery URGENTLY!!! She is in a lot of pain and at risk of urinary, kidney and bladder infections. She is a literal child btw!!!

I can provide proof with the doctor prescriptions and the surgery papers once we can pay it of course.

We had to find a trans friendly urologist for her safety but it is very VERY expensive :C

We're dealing with unemployment, a house full of mold and rust in the water while fighting with our chronic illnesses and disabling pain while caring for my elderly in-laws and our kids.
