Feel the Heat!

something i love about steel ball run is how, when you first meet diego, you assume that he’s gotta be this super evil guy, because he’s dio after all. and then the first time he gets a proper introduction, it’s from johnny, who goes on about how awful diego is, that you should stay away from him, how there’s rumors that he killed an old woman for her money, etc… johnny says diego is the worst type of person there is and that things like murder & sabotage are second nature to him. and you believe all of this without question, because of course you do— johnny is the jojo joestar protagonist, and diego is dio brando.

but then, the further you get, the more and more obvious it becomes that diego is really not that bad at all, johnny just has a huge personal grudge against the guy because he lost a race to him when he was 17.

like, you’re so quick to assume diego must be evil because of COURSE he is why WOULDN’T the dio counterpart be evil, and so you’re also quick to believe everything bad that johnny says about him. but the manga clearly anticipates these reader biases from the very beginning, and it uses them to its advantage. it gradually shows you more of diego’s actual character until you’re like, oh. so johnny is actually the petty bitch (affectionate) in this situation huh. this is actually completely different from what i originally thought huh.
