The title’s a little sensationalistic, but the question is a good one. One of the three “big ideas” about technology that I share in some of my presentations is that within about ten years we’re going to be able to buy a consumer level computer with the same processing power as the human mind. Based on the current pace of technology, about a decade after that we’ll have the same processing power in our cellphones. Which leads me to the questions that keep me up sometimes:
What are we going to do with a brain-powered cellphone?
What does that device do for us?
How will that change our lives?
And the really important question that I think is overlooked far too often: When will Skynet take over?
Short of banning smartphones (a short-term solution, at best), I think the evolution of AI services like Siri means that the problems I pose for my students will have to shift from a focus on finding the answer as the endpoint — to a greater focus on analysis. OK, you have the answer but so what? What does that answer mean in a real-life situation?

In a nutshell, connectivism argues that digital media have caused knowledge to be more distributed than ever, and it is now more important for students to know where to find knowledge they require, than it is for them to internalise it. This places the onus firmly upon each student to develop their own personalised learning tools, environments, learning networks and communities within which they can ‘store their knowledge’ (Siemens, 2004).

"As educators we must be learners first. If we are to be better educators, we must first be better learners. We may not always have a choice in what we learn. After so long not being involved with learning, many educators do not know how much they do not know. How can they make decisions on what they need to learn, if they are unaware of the existence of many of the things they need to know?" This applies to the use of technology in teaching: how can we facilitate students in using social media in learning if we don't engage with them first, in our everyday learning practice?
