I want to see this so badly.
Next stop mammoth.
My favorite part of the trip was when we left our packs behind, took off our shoes and traveled up stream. Some parts of the river where deep enough to swim. I could have followed that river to the end but we had to stop pretending to be Pocahontas and move on. #justaroundtheriverbend
I took many picture of my new favorite shoes.
Yay! Bolts!! So many bolts!!
The approach involved scrambling and “chos skiing” down the steep walls of the gorge. No pictures were taken of our descent. We were busing avoiding rock sides and twisted ankles. I had it easy, Manny carried the rope and Stephen carried the beer. When we reached the bottom we hiked along the river for a while looking for the walls described in the guidebook. We didn’t have much luck. As the hiking got a little more strenuous we started to question our corse. Wading through thick brush and stinging nettle (This son of a gun has tiny spores that burn and itch when they attach to your skin. Good thing I wore shorts.) and bolder hopping through the river which Manny had already fallen into twice soaking his shoes, camera and the guidebook. No climbs to be found. So we called it and headed back up the way we came. Once we reached the top of the gorge we snapped this picture, took off our shoes and looked down at the gorge. That’s when Stephen had a sudden moment of enlightenment. He pulled out the guide book and compared the picture of the gorge below. We had gone the wrong way. We had journeyed left into the remote wilderness when just to the right was the pathway that would lead through a light hike to sport climbing wonderland.
Standing at the base of these walls really made me feel small… In the best possible way.
Just to the left of our campsite was a canyon where we found these gorgeous walls. There was a few bolts, the progress of route setter that would easily put us to shame.
Here's a few pictures from Owens river gorge this summer. We started off the trip in a bioscience laboratory smashing dry ice with a hammer and shotgunning IPAs. After driving all night we followed the guidebooks directions to a free campsite, which to me resembled the set of a horror film. The boys chose a suitable plot of land where we laid out our bags and crashed. It had been completely dark when we arrived so waking up to this mountain sunrise was total surprise.

Sunset on our last night in the park.
Climbing headstone was magical as always.
First morning of my third trip to Joshua Tree.
