I get why fantasy authors would default to using, like, the same basic arrangement of seasons and weather and gravity that we have here in The Real World because they have to make up so much shit as it is and it IS probably good praxis to give your readers some familiar touchstones in your world so they can just focus on the plot, but. having said that. I think there should be more settings that have seventeen seasons, all of them different lengths, and constellations that don't have fixed patterns because sometimes they'll get pissy and just move to a different part of the sky, and sometimes the sun tells people things telepathically, and there's a type of weather where the air just gets really thick and difficult to walk through that's unpleasant but not any more uncommon than rain. it's called smärklf.

blue jeans sound like corny worldbuilding tbh

like you have this planetary culture where denim trousers are worn throughout much of the world, and they’re blue, they’re just blue almost all the time and any other color is considered a fanciful variation. the people from this planet just wear blue trousers all the time and no they’re not even comfortable. the blue means nothing to them but by god do they just keep wearing it.

like for some reason we have just accepted that Blue Jeans are neutral. blue is not a neutral color; we don’t wear blue trousers made out of other materials. but for some reason we have just collectively accepted that blue-dyed denim is a default neutral color that can be paired with anything. we’re a Blue Trousers Planet and that’s so fucking silly.

This is a great example of not understanding both what is important narrative information is and how arbitrary culture is. A "realistic" culture will have lots of weird cruft, like which side buttons are on or how long jackets are supposed to be that have weird stories, but those details aren't relevant to why the duke killed the queen.

Consider how Levis, especially, are a premium fashion brand that started out as work clothes for prospectors and cowboys. They got elevated as "legitimate jeans" during American postwar culture masturbation. There wouldn't be as many blue jeans without things like the Marlboro Man because culture's weird.

Anyway “important narrative information” my ass. If I said that the inhabitants of Glabroc wore red leather vests because the color and material was believed to turn away the spiritual arrows of the wicked Hunter God that bring disease and pestilence because it represents a pre-killed carcass, that would just be bog standard worldbuilding. It has nothing to do with what the Duke killed the Queen, but it paints a picture of Glabroc and makes it feel more “alive”.

My point is that we don’t tolerate mundanity in fiction—or, hell, even in our anthropological understandings of other cultures. We accept that blue jeans are blue Just Because, even when it’s no longer a matter of practicality, and the idea that the blue is intentional representation of our planet’s oceans or our respect for our largest vertebrateis absurd. Yet when we want to know about other Cultures™️, real or fictional, “just because” seems implausible. Culture™️ must be laden with symbolism and intent (unless it’s our own)! It has to Mean something or it doesn’t seem realistic! How could the people of Glabroc go about their lives and not think it’s weird that wear red leather vests are so common?

My favorite type of character development is the 180. someone who was once a study in rage and grief now being an empty shell of their former self. that's the first 180. the second is that the softness of their voice, their hesitancy, their lack of confidence, translates into positive traits--hesitancy becomes patience. a lack of confidence becomes a newfound ability to ask others for help, to see the strengths in those around you rather than their faults. their emptiness at first made them speak less, but then they listened more, learned more, didn't just blow past the things they considered insignificant. it's a three-part change (rage/grief/love of all kinds) that i love to see
