alright, i'll be the one to say it. ao3 and tumblr becoming "mainstream" did so much damage to the community and the writers. i have seen loads of videos and posts about:

1. people hating on writers and fics. writing is something we do for free and for fun. if you stumble upon a fanfic that isn't necessarily your cup of tea or you just don't like, scroll. dont read it. literally leave their page. you don't know if this could be the author's first work that they're so excited about, you dont know if the language they're writing in isn't their first language, you dont know that the writer could be a literal teen and loads of other reasons. fanfictions don't HAVE to be perfect. you write what you want to write because we do it for fun and enjoyment and we want to share that to the world. seriously, what is the wrong with that?..

2. x reader consumers getting WAY too entitled. the number of tiktoks i've seen that say "i run a strict program when it comes to reading fanfics." girl you aint running shit. this is FAN FICTION you're reading. F A N F I C T I O N. there is no denying that most fanfiction writes are beyond talented but just because you read one fanfic that exceeds your expectations doesn't give you the right to talk down on others that don't. people have their own personal writing style, their way of doing things and you talking shit on that isn't right.

at the end of the day, we are all humans, reading and writing is what we do and what we're meant to do. and for you to talk shit about a person WRITING is so insane. we are humans. not some robots that you can tell what to do so you can consume it.

i've seen so so many authors take down their fanfics and losing all motivation to write because of a hate comment. DONT LIKE DONT READ‼️

BSD Volume Covers 1-24

My first BSD related post. Hi y'all! I think the first thing that struck me about the series was the art by Harukawa Sango. Like, it's almost shocking to me how much they've degraded the artistic value of BSD in the anime adaptation. It looks NOTHING like Sango's art (least of all with the annoying fisheye effects).

I get a feeling that BSD might not be a favorite of Bones Studio, because the original material and the adaptation are leagues apart. I wanted to make a sort of collection post for the volume covers of BSD because the art is so beautiful! I think i'll also make a collection post of all the volume color spreads, because those are even better!

Harukawa's art is indeed beautiful. But so is the anime. It's one of the nicest looking anime I have seen - not the most, but one of, and the characters generally looks quite good. It doesn't look like Harukawa's art because Harukawa is not an animator - other people animate it, and the animation style depends on budget, the team, and edits made to make it animateable. Small details like Chuuya's hat chain are usually cut out. Due to time constraints, certain sections of animation will be simplified, especially if they are small - Chuuya's Lovecraft corruption scene is a good example.

During animation, there are key frames, and in-betweens. The key frames are the starts, stops, or heights of an animated sequence - the bits that need to look the greatest. The in-betweens connect them and are usually given to lesser skilled peeps to animate, since it's more about moving this section there and so on.

A single second of animation in Japan takes about 24 entire images or frames, if I'm not wrong. That means just 2 minutes is 2,880 hand drawn stills, and a 24 minute or so episode is 34,560 hand drawn images.

It would be impossible to keep Harukawa's level of detail and quality at that kind of workload.

There are certainly ways to make the image generation and animation easier, and style choices that can be made, but that's what we're looking at.

Harukawa's manga isn't even in COLOR. That's just the front page, and it will also be done at a higher level that the inside - all manga is like that.

And, having done the research, I can factually say that it is the anime, not the manga, that has the most realistic clothing design.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder on this one.

Can't comment on the fisheye choice tho.

I don't intend to sound negative, and it's great that you love Harukawa's style over the anime, but to say that "they degraded the artistic value of BSD" to create the anime is so far from the truth. It's simply a different style of art. Same with "BSD might not be a favorite of Studio Bones". Harukawa doesn't work for Studio Bones. Studio Bones is who gives us all the shipping art - soukoku and shinsoukoku. And sure, ships sell, but some of it is drop dead gorgeous. How can they not be taking pride in it? There's new merch and art from Studio Bones every time I turn around the corner.
