Artist Statment:

For me, this project allowed me to do something I have never had the opportunity to do. To do something that I actually do in my spare time, my own project. These two pages are additions to a much larger, hand-made book, that I created a few years ago. These pages are from the story of King Arthur and how he obtained his sword, the Excalibur. Although the most popular story tells that he came to have the sword because he drew it from the stone, but the story that he received it from the Lady of the Lake interests me the most. This is what you see on the pages. 

This book has no order, and no table of contents. 

All random, spontaneous ideas.

Reading Response: Performance: A Hidden History

After having read Performance: A Hidden History, I have realized that despite the fact that we are breaking new ground with regards to using the concept of performance to render a work instead of a material, I did not realize that it is not necessarily a “New” art form.  It progressed through history; was touched by different artists who saw ways to use it differently. It started as unheard of and became a successful art form that we have come to appreciate today. I myself am not a big fan of performance art. I myself as an artist have a difficult time making my work into my own form, but I do feel that it is a medium that broadens horizons and evolves the way that you think about and see art.

Project 4: Artist's Statement

Vanishing and Becoming

When I began project 4, Vanishing and Becoming, I was really trying to think a lot about time, and how I could make it into a visual concept. Sure, when you go throughout your day it is easy and sometimes even annoying how well we understand the concept of time passing. The difficult think about time though is that it is never really on your side. We can’t slow it down to see how time happens and we can’t speed it up to see what time has to offer ahead. With the simple use of a camera, portions of time can be captured. When I thought about time, the concept of growth ran parallel to it in my mind; the growth of a butterfly from a cocoon, growth of a child to an adult. Although the time it takes for the growth of these things to happen is lengthy and slow, dramatic changes are still taking place. I felt that the best way to represent time for my video was the growth of a plant from a seed. Starting beneath the ground, growing up and up until bursting through the soil. A flower blooms and then closes at the end, making a life cycle from start to finish using different plants growing.

Reading Response: Projections: Vanishing and Becoming

Projections: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt The part that I found most interesting in Projections: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt began with the concept in the first paragraph that describes the beginning of art as when a maiden of Corinth is spending a last evening with her beloved before he ships out to sea. A lamp in the room casts a shadow of his profile against the wall. To remember him, she finds a charcoal stick from her fireplace and outlines his silhouette there on her wall. To me, this is a great instance of the first impression of projection. Because of the projected shadow, the maiden was able to capture him in a moment. Although the image isn’t specific, or detailed, this projection brings her close to him even if he is far from her. As the reading continues, it is discussed how projections have changed over time and how they serve as a channel for human connection to one another. Everyone is seemingly reaching out to one another for some kind on understanding, a reassurance that we are all together. Cubitt describes the internet as a place where everyone is simply one big thought bubble. Everyone’s thoughts smashed together in a nondistinctive jumble that is open to everyone to see. There can be no hiding or dismissing the truths and sufferings of the world. In this way, we can be more understanding of each other and hopefully be constantly aware of what is going on around us and not just in our own lives. Terry Barrett: Time: The continuum of experience in which events actually or apparently take place, It is used to specify events. Motion: The actual or implied changing of position In this chapter, Barrett discusses how we experience time and motion in our every day lives through pop culture. Things like the joystick of a video game, or the panels in a comic book. We see the same kind of time and motion in an art gallery. Barrett helps us understand the meaning of time and motion and how they are best described as words, since both have to be experienced.
