Wrong: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because she was Lord Byron's daughter.
Right: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because that was the closest you could get in 1850 to being a Super Mario 64 speedrunner.
This is how I found out that Ada Lovelace was Lord Byrons daughter
Well, yeah. That's why she received the unusual education which laid the foundation for her later discoveries in the first place. Her mother, Lady Byron, firmly believed three things:
It was her responsibility as a mother to ensure that Ada didn't turn out like her father;
Fundamentally, the thing that was wrong with Lord Byron is that he was a poet; and
The opposite of poetry is math.
Ada Lovelace's biography handily illustrates how well this theory worked out in practice.

the horrors persist but so do books, art, hot chocolate, winter nights, the moon, the sea, the stars, sunsets, literature, libraries, cats, flowers, stories, love and the wistful feeling you get when you finally return home

Everyone loves a cycle aware Orpheus but what about a cycle aware Eurydice? Eurydice who tries her hardest to resist the hunger and the cold. Tries to convince Orpheus to just LOOK UP time and time again to no avail. Eurydice who KNOWS and still fails. She knows heâs gonna turn around. She knows theyâre not gonna make it out of hell together. But she hopes. Every time she hopes that he loves her a little bit less than the last time. Hopes he wonât look back. But of course, Orpheus is still Orpheus. And he loves her more than anything.
what they don't tell you about hadestown is that orpheus and eurydice are not the main characters. neither are persephone and hades. or hermes. or the fates. the main character is whoever in the band is playing the trombone because holy fuck
iâm going to go lie flat on some train tracks
I DID NOT KNOW THISSS
the musical STARTS with hades looking back btw. âyouâre earlyâ âi missed youâ is hades looking back. is anybody listening. orpheus is told he canât look back because hades knows he will because hades canât stop himself from looking back. and thatâs why the world is out of tune.
My favourite little x men thing is when someone is like "Give up, Magneto! You stand no chance against this plastic weapon/gun/suit I have built!"
And Magneto is like "I see. Whatever will I do."
and throws the surrounding infrastructure at them.

I'm thrilled to report that not so long ago, he had his heart ripped straight from his body and kept going for hours by keeping his own blood inside his body and circulating it.
Dr. Gachey with foxglove, 1890
Some of Van Goghâs best work was done during a period of his life that he spent in a hospital being treated for his mental health problems. I could be wrong but I think Starry Night was among those.
This is consistently the case. Creators tend to do their best work when they are in a healthy place and receiving proper treatment and not being self destructive in their efforts to cope. Go figure.
All our experiences, good and bad, inform what we create, but suffering is not the price of great art. Suffering is what prevents artists from completing great art.
(I bring to mind this @tkingfisher / Ursula Verson quote about once a week <3)
There are many people who donât share this sentiment, but I have an appreciation for when a fanfic is so separated from canon that it couldâve easily been its own original novel, and yet the author was only ever going to put that much energy into it if their favourite characters got to be there
I think thereâs a difference between âthe author stripped the media of everything it had to replace it with something easyâ and âthe author thought up a concept they really really like and are bestowing it upon the character like a medalâ
it's the opposite of sanding off the serial numbers. like you really invented a brand-new AU just to put your blorbos in. you built an entire world just for them to play in. it's like rat park but for blorbos. i love you so much i invented whole new situations just for you. beautiful
Gale and Halsin silly doodles (I saw a tiktok and immediately thought of Halsin)
Now,, Bear in mind.
