“We’re celebrating Women’s History Month today with the courageous Amelia Earhart. In youth she was a fearless child whose taste for adventure would guide her through life. In an era when the majority of women were confined to the household, Earhart volunteered for the Red Cross during World War I, studied medicine, and worked as an English teacher for immigrant laborers. But with the dawn of the aviation age, Earhart was inspired by the excitement of stunt fliers and air shows. She took up piloting and made her first solo flight in 1921. Earhart was asked to join a team that was flying across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928. She quickly accepted, exclaiming, “How could I refuse such a shining adventure!” and became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. By 1937, Earhart was a household name, and her books chronicling her adventures became best-sellers. Intent on “just one more long flight,” the aviator departed on an around-the-world flight with navigator Fred Noonan. It would be the last time anyone ever saw them.”
